Whatever guys, Megaman Zero and ZX actually make a lot of sense compared to the older series and I'm glad about that.

Actually the Model-A in ZXA is not supposed to be Axl, even if his abilities are the same, it's pretty explicitly stated.

...then how come he's called "A" and his abilities are the same?

(Never played ZXA.  Liked the original ZX but never finished it.)

Because there's a guy called Albert, and the whole plot of ZXA revolves around how he made Model-A. And some other stuff.

They do refer to Model-X and Z in way that implies that they are Megaman X and Zero, but there's never any mention of Axl, and Model-A never disputes the fact that yes, Albert created him, so his origins are pretty clear.

Of course, yes, he totally has Axl's abilities, but there's isn't a connection plotwise. Basically he's as much Axl as Guile from Chrono Cross is Magus, or if you want to stay in the same series, about as much as Doctor Weil is Dr. Wily. Probably even less so since they actually fully explain where Model-A came from.

All right, even if you people can't get engrossed in Megaman plots the way I do, Megaman ZX and ZXA are very fine Megaman games I highly recommend them.

also i think that Model A doesn't even have the same abilities since he doesn't have multi-direction shot or hovering, he just has the same color scheme and two guns.

I thought they were only 100-year jumps from X to Zero, Zero to ZX, and Battle Network to Star Force.

Is this thread strictly for talking about canon?  I was thinking about picking up that Mega Man Zero collection thing for the DS, but I'm not sure if those are held in high esteem as far as actual gameplay goes.  I never tried any of them.

Um, but to try to keep with the theme of the thread (but not really), I've been kind of thinking after Mega Men 9 and 10 that Wily's final boss machines are his equivalent of the Facebook post, where he gets to show someone what he's currently interested in, even if it's just to a robot that hates him.

"You know, I think dinosaurs are really neat right now.  And skulls!  Hey.  HEY!  Who has two thumbs, eight robot masters, and really loves pirates?  THIS DOCTOR!"

It's kind of sad and adorable.  I wish my grandparents would do stuff like this, instead of whatever they do, because I honestly don't know.

I only played the first Zero game.  My observation was that it required tedious grinding to get sufficient upgrades to make the game not bitch-ass hard.  I think you also get punished for upgrading, as far as access to postgame content, but that didn't actually matter to me.

Aside from the "bitch-ass hard" part, it was really a pretty good game.

ZX is the next evolution from there; it was a pretty great game with a mostly-useless map system.  I hear ZXA fixed the map but I never played it.

You never really got punished for upgrading. You only lost points if you used the cyber elves, which is the dumbest thing in the zero games. Honestly though, do you give a shit about ratings in a Japanese game when it pulls shit like that?

If the rating is just a rating, sure, but what if you need a certain rating to get the actual ending?

I never really played MMZ4, but 2 and 3 were really good. They both start off really difficult, but in the good way, where you'll eventually win though practice. The game was pissing me off the first time through, but every time I've played it since, it's been considerably easier.

ZX is the next evolution from there; it was a pretty great game with a mostly-useless map system.  I hear ZXA fixed the map but I never played it.

The map is just little cubes that show where exits are and the shape of the area -- they don't show platforms or powerups. However, if you change into any of the shitennou, you get new map functionality (harpuia shows enemy weak points, shadow shows all platforms and enemies in abstract and lets you see in the dark, leviathan zooms the map out and shows the level layout and all powerups, and fafnir... actually his screen lets you adjust how your shots travel instead of anything useful)

There's another game that punishes you for using one of its main gameplay elements, but I can't remember what it is off the top of my head.

I guess I'll give it a try because it's pretty cheap, though.  Hopefully it'll be similar to Mega Man X in difficulty, where it starts off near impossible until you go scouring the levels for the little health upgrades.

Dragon Quarter?  Final Fantasy VIII?

Dragon Quarter!  I think that's the one.  I forgot it even existed, but I still remembered how irritating that aspect was.

I'm not sure what a cyber elf is yet, so I'm not sure if it'll bother me too much.  If it's a big part of the game, that's just a reallly bizarre decision on their part.  "Here's this new system we came up with and don't you dare use it."

I've also never really played any non-NES Mega Man games outside of the first two X's and the first Legends, so I'm not sure how that'll go.  The cool 8-bit sprite work was always a huge part of the appeal.
