I actually didn't go to the devroom past voting for the new femme co-star, so I have no idea why it started looking awful.
uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

The best analogy I could come up with is as if you had two kids, and really loved them, but their father died. Then his boss came to your house and said "hey, we're giving you another kid, but instead of you having it with your husband, a bunch of retarded toddlers will choose one from an orphanage for you." Now people are sad that they wont have that third child.

No not even sad. Sui/homicidal that this retarded bastard child is no longer being forced on them.

People are taking this as a fucking personal attack. Like capcom offered them some cake but instead ass raped all their mothers and spit in their eyes for giving a chance in the first place to a game that everyone with a firm handle on reality knew was doomed.

At that point it looked like they were still constraining fan choice to decisions that could only be "sub-optimal" not giving them access to stuff that could make the whole thing careen down to bad.

In the rare things soar department, I agree with classic. Capcom was limiting devroom voting to things that had the illusion of big impact, but didn't amount for much overall.

Okay let's take the female character as an example.

You are both saying that they had planned a character one dimensional enough that any of the designs here could have been used to represent her with no clashing, and that that is a sign of good game development.

Don't get me wrong, MML3 was fucked long before they even announced any of the choice. I'm just saying this was a particularly smelly pile and no one else seemed to notice. Oh hey a chance to use this clip again.

The assumption was that the character's personality was likely to fit the design.  Snowboard Girl and Brown Fashion Disaster Girl definitely had very different sample expressions, so it's unlikely the designers were given a script that just had "GENKI!" scrawled all over it.

The breakdown was when the safest, blandest choice shockingly outperformed the rest in an 11-choice poll, and now they're stuck trying to wring character out of a girl that even porn artists aren't excited about.

I don't know the whole story but I always assumed being hamstrung by the fans themselves was what set Boss Man over the edge.  PCHOO-CHOO-CHOO-choo-choo-choo!

In at tonelico qoga, one of the villains is a computer program with some tampered programming. Via free day 1 dlc, you can give her one of five different moe personalities. Tsundere, Yandere, Masocist, Pure Maiden, and lovey-dovey. You fight her a few times, you have plot conversations with her. The content of her dialog is the same, but how she says it and treats you change wildly.

That is what I think this was. Base framework laid out by Capcom, and fans can pick one of several predetermined color schemes.

the problem is that games that just dont look like they'll be any good like that devil may cry prequel and Socom:resident evil edition (really? a game about the umbrella security services and Hunk isn't even in it?) are still farting along, while a game that people WANTED dies

Apparently, Capcom decided that they wouldn't make enough on it. If I got paid for completely baseless speculation, I'd say that they were a little disappointed in the press returns on the devroom.

Are you changing up your prescription?

Take this with all the salt it richly deserves:
It's not necessary to make all of the character and dialogue decisions in the prototype stage. The risks and compromises that go with revising a script by committee as development goes on are pretty obvious, but I'm (unreasonably) certain you've played and enjoyed games where this development plan was put into use only with less public focus tests.

One method of game design, even the best method of game design, isn't the only method that produces good results.

Finally, let's not go putting words in other's mouths, eh?

Oh man. You know whats the best thing. Nearly getting banned from talking time irc because I had the audacity to think it was stupid of someone to buy a 3DS ($250) for the sole purpose of playing this game... that isn't even released yet... and had been delayed when they bought the 3ds.

I'm sorry that me giving an example of one stupid thing made it seem like that was the only thing that looked bad. Suffice to say I really, really wanted the ending MML deserved, and am personally happy that it is no longer just getting an ending.

Outside of that you can draw your own conclusions about how these events went down.

I'm just wondering why you chose the one "stupid thing" I already knew about and why I needed to hear about how desperately we all wanted this to be an Inafune-as-auteur climax, when what I was soliciting opinions on was where the devroom made it look irredeemable.

I guess I shouldn't assume that you didn't, and Inafune's departing comments make is clear he didn't feel able to impart what he wanted MML3 to be to his subordinates. I thought we had enough faith in Inafune's ability to wring interesting games from Capcom's development processes that we wouldn't shitcan the game for the two day's worth of news from the devroom.

To wit: Where, for you, did the retarded toddlers cause you to leave the devroom cacophony?

Maybe its the heat but am I the only one who is somewhat fearful at the idea of neat game prospects being shit canned at their ad campaigns not getting enough press?

See, this is just the point I'm trying to make. There's no update where someone posts about how they made a 3d model of their cock and it would be replacing all the reaverbots.

Capcom was trying to make the game into something that could make them money. Understandably, being that they're a company. The thing is, it wasn't MML anymore, just a cash cow cleverly disguised to appease an age-old complaint from fanboys. They weren't taking pisses without checking to see what angle people would pay more for them to take it at and that's exactly what the problem was.

MML was going against basically everything the franchise had done to that point and it did it oh-so-right. Safe to say Inafune wouldn't have let what they were doing fly (and didn't), but even if they did still have him, they weren't making Mega Man Legends 3. They were making Mega Man Legends: Bum Monkeys.

So...
The process being pursued precluded taking risks.
Am I reading you right?
And you go on to say that it was the risks that the MML series took with the franchise that made it such an amazing game?

Oh yay, fanboy entitlement.

Well, put me down as somebody who didn't want to see a beloved series end in a design-by-committee sequel that so disappointed its creator that he quit the company he'd spent 25 years at.  I guess I'm just not much of a Mega Man fan.

And you go on to say that it was the risks that the MML series took with the franchise that made it such an amazing game?

Really it's the fact that it had nothing at all to DO with the franchise except for a handful of cursory details.

Legends was the perfect antidote to everything that was wrong with the Mega Man series at the time.  Both series had gotten stale and repetetive, and with the transition to 32-bit had introduced truly awful voice acting.  MML offered fresh gameplay, a good story with some of the best voice acting in a 32-bit game, and a tone diametrically opposite to the angst of the X series.

It had its share of flaws, but there's a pure JOY to it that the preceding two series had lost when they turned into cynical exercises in repetition.

But no, let's go back to talking about how pissed we are that the Legends series isn't going to go down that same path now.

If ever there was a misguided attempt to infuse something with what the humans call "love" or "joy" asking your fans to contribute as much as they can to the opus would be it. Of course, there's a six-pack of Zero Punctuations that preaches how fan input is a one-way ticket to missing the point.

Inafune's comments make it pretty clear that he was upset about this project, but I didn't glean what exactly about the process set him off.
