I feel like this new wave of anti-abortion rhetoric and (feeble) legislation is a ploy by the right to try to resurrect the envangelist base that got Bush elected in 2000 and 2004. Maybe they think that if they just try to pander a little harder to the religious, they'll be able to get the victory in November that was denied them in 2008.

Of course, it's not endearing them to swing voters and moderates at all. Maybe this will all have a big payoff, where the right loses even more credibility in the long run than they could have ever stood to gain.

No, it's the result of the evangelist base getting a bunch of people elected. They're running on a campaign of "If I'm elected, I'll ban abortions." Then they get elected and start trying to ban abortions. Though usually they're more subtle about it. I tend to think the Pregnant-Before-Having-Sex Act was meant to be shot down, so they could then bring up a bill they legitimately wanted instead. As it just so happened, though, every person in the Arizona legislature is crazy, with Queen Crazy at the helm, so it got passed. It may get struck down in the courts, but that's still win-win for the people who got elected. They get to demonize the federal government, then have a sort of How-To Guide to get an actual abortion ban passed.

Loughner ruled mentally fit; pleads guilty in exchange for life without parole.

Quote
The outcome was welcomed by some victims, including Giffords herself, as a way to avoid a lengthy, possibly traumatic trial and years of legal wrangling over a death sentence.

"The pain and loss caused by the events of Jan. 8, 2011, are incalculable," Giffords said in a joint statement with her husband, Mark Kelly. "Avoiding a trial will allow us — and we hope the whole Southern Arizona community — to continue with our recovery."

Sounds like a dangerous game when the guy they're ousting loves Yahweh
or Allah because clearly secret muslim
while the guy they're trying to get in prefers Mormos.

I don't think this is a trivial semantic nitpick here; I think it's okay to describe a Nazi organization using the word "Nazi".  I mean, are you worried that you might offend Nazis?  Or do you just not know what "Nazi" means?

Dude, "Nazi" is not the preferred nomenclature.

Quote from: Mark Kelly, Giffords' husband and astronaut
"You tried to create for all of us a world as dark and evil as your own,” said the former astronaut as he looked at Loughner. “But know this, and remember it always: You failed."
