Roguelikes!
« on: February 12, 2011, 02:15:29 AM »

I've been playing dungeon crawl (stone soup) and I'm remembering that I suck at roguelikes! I also remembered that maybe there's not a nice thread for us to bitch about yasd, or how terrible roguelike X is when we're pretty sure it doesn't actually merit a whole thread to itself. e.g. Dungeon crawl.

I really love Dungeon Crawl, mostly because it feels like you have more control over the game, compared to Nethack where you are constantly at the mercy of the RNG.

Of course if you really want to be at the mercy of the RNG, you can worship Xom or Nemelex Xobeh and ride the luck train all the way to winner town (or death).

I still feel like there are encounters I can't anticipate or ever really escape from.

I turn a corner, and look! It's a party of orcs! Is there a wizard there? Am I more than 4-5 turns from the stairs? Whoops! Done!

I have a feeling that these games are going to finally break me of my "I might need it later" syndrome though. I don't know how many times I've been cruising around with a wand of disintegration and 1-2 charges that I'm "saving" for that terrible monster that really needs to be undone and then I get surprised when I try to solve an ogre or a hill giant  with melee or ordinary ranged combat and die because Durrr they still hit for upwards of 60% of my hp.

There is enough stuff you can do in DCSS that you really should just use anything you have  to try to save yourself. Especially in the early stages, because the only things you probably have to save yourself are scrolls.

If you want a low-maintenance playthrough, be a troll berserker. See ork group, pop berserk and wreck their shit. Also you get the comedy starvation deaths when you pop berserk and then can't find anything on the floor to eat. Also once Trog likes you enough you can summon friends who will save your ass in some situations. Oh, and Trog will keep throwing awesome weapons at you that you can't use. Fuck you, I can't use all of these spears!

Oh, don't forget that some monsters can pick up all of the +5 weapon of fuckoff that Trog will throw at you.

yeah never save anything in stone soup. if you see a wizard, blink your ass outta there posthaste.

Recently i grabbed Z.H.P. for PSP. It's actually a REALLY SOLID GAME, but it has the typical Nippon Ichi level of completely pointless timewasting -- there's usually about a ten-minute cutscene between every single dungeon, none of which are there for a good reason, it's usually just to make some lame joke about how unlosing ranger is dead or the bunny girl is mean.

N1 just seriously does not seem to give a shit about respecting people's time, or else maybe they just have no concept of what content is actually worthwhile. Either way, i have with some regret deleted the game forever.

Also lost labyrinth for windows is ultra mega garbage but it's too bad because the actual game seems pretty fun

So I started this again recently and I got my hands on an amulet of the gourmand. Suddenly my character is an even more terrifying monster as he (not literally) trolls around the dungeon eating the flesh of sapients he's gored with his spear.

YASD:

After having expended altogether too many of my shit-got-real resources clearing out one half of an orc infested bailey, I was slain by a knight with a +2 halberd of reaching making a sprint for the murder and goodies in the other half.

Are the cutscenes skippable? I enjoyed Z.H.P., but it's possible I just have a higher tolerance for N1 humor.

I guess it does say something that I decided to ignore the challenge dungeons after I accidentally gave away my save file. I could replay the game to get to those bastions of crunchy roguelike goodness, but I don't want to go through the main plot again.

Azure Dreams is still the best Roguelike.

Let it be written.

Just got to the 16th floor for the first time this play through with Guru's Pot, farmed Barongs for three each of red and blue sand and a lucky fruit, then walked straight into a Garuda.

It was the biggest  :pfff: ever

I enjoyed the shit out of that game, but I don't know if I could go that far.
Didn't it have a portable sequel?

uh afaik they are not. most of the jokes in there would be funny if they were delivered with any sense of timing but they apparently do not have an editor.

anyway on topic: buy dungeons of dreadmore or fuck you

Dungeons of Dredmor is an incredibly promising game, but there's a lot of outstanding issues; I myself don't plan to give it another shot until they've added a way to split stacks of items.

But it's a very cool game, good design and really excellent writing. And cheap.

It'd make selling extra crafting tools or using the Horadric Lutefisk Cube a whole lot more practical, in any case.

the lutefisk cube has conversion rates for stackables precisely because turning one copper ingot into 24 lutefisk would be unbalanced. you're not supposed to be able to split stacks.

Oooh, I thought it only ever made one piece out of any stack. I must have tested it once with a stack of two or something.
