AKA "That game that whatshisface from Three Panel Soul has been working on for the last however many years".

It is excellent. I've never really gotten into MMOs before now, but I'm enjoying this one even more than expected. I've done a couple of PUG runs and one with some Talking Tyrants thus far.

You guys should play!

I started playing, and I got to tier two stuff and can't get any further on my own.

I also have absolutely no idea what is happening or what alchemy is or anything and the wiki doesn't help, but I do know that I want to make a magic hood but I keep dying after fucking gathering frayed fabric and people charge crazy prices for them.

Anyway we should quest together and stuff I guess I'm Beatbandit in game.

Monster patterns got more interesting the more time I spent in game, and I found some weapons with alternate attack patterns that I guess are an interesting decision, but with no skill system (or even a way to direct your heat to individual pieces of gear to powerlevel), there is very little incentive to continue playing this game, which is kind of a shame because I think it has potential. The build-your-own level thing and being able to incentivise it for other players in case you want to farm a particuar mat is neat. The monster attack patterns are pretty engaging for a dungeon crawler, though monsters with different weapon types need the weapons to be larger for differentiation. Switching between weapons is interesting, but the swords are pretty stale except for their charging attacks (and charging attacks in general don't seem worth it because of the huge time cost) and switching between weapons isn't always reliable in the middle of combat: the only time you actually need it to be reliable.

So I have been hardcore all over this game way more than I should be.

So far Smiler and I are the only members of Mad Gear, the Bronto-approved guild, and he's only ever been on once. Meanwhile, I'm practically ready for T3 dungeons and still don't have anyone to grind with.

Beatbandit illustrated a terrific point tonight: It is very difficult to talk to someone while doing ANYTHING.

Also, finally Tier 2.

I'm having trouble playing due to how incredibly obvious all of the design focuses on bilking players.

If you don't log in for a long time, you never go over 100 energy. You can be gone a week and only have a day's ration of "free" energy to show for it.

It costs energy to do fucking ANYTHING.
  • Crafting. Even the earliest shit is half a day's energy.
  • Rezzing after death. Exponential(!) scaling on repeat deaths in one run. (Party members can rez you with their hp to avoid energy cost, but...)
  • *Note Boss fight design is SNK-ludicrous. Have fun rezzing.
  • Every dungeon floor is 1/10 a day's energy allotment.
  • Challenge rooms (also often with shit/no drops) cost energy. They're also typically full of train-rape, so have fun rezzing.
  • Bonus treasure rooms (often with shit/no drops) cost energy. (This one is not such a big deal.)

Armor appearance is tied to your initially selected color.

There's no ability to preview armor.

What looks okay in the wiki may in fact look like COMPLETE AND UTTER SHIT on your character.

You can't repick any of your colors. Read as, "Did you pick green? Have fun rerolling, even though it looked good on your starter armor, you stupid faggot." They will probably eventually put in an item or NPC to let you repick, but it will probably cost $5, because "fuck you."

The effort:reward ratio scaling sort of sucks. It's fun as a newbie, but the farm and grind get awful before you hit tier 3. You'll start maxing heat out on your equipment before you can afford new stuff (unless you spend time playing the town market, which is boring unless you masturbate to ripping people off, as Three Rings apparently now does—also, it has no auction house). This results in a crushing sense of stagnation.

Also, it's insulting having to pay 200 crowns to access tier 2. (It's not 100% consistent, but it's incurred the VAST majority of the time, and I have no idea what causes the fee to appear and disappear).

The whole experience has soured me on microtransactions in a pretty serious way. This sucks, because the combat is generally pretty fun, despite its repetitiveness.

Each elevator has a separate Moorcroft Manor (and Emberlight for T3) and you need to reach each one manually before jumping right to it.

::3:

But yeah. Microtransactions in this game don't annoy me too bad because by the time you reach tier 2 you can make enough crowns to fund energy purchases outweighing the cost of adventuring.

Now the bad things:

You need to deal with people, the people that play this kind of game. You will never, ever, ever get all the materials for your recipes. Good luck doing anything on your own either. Tier one you can get through on your own with practice but with the energy costs early game its better to get a bigger party for the item reward. Past that even just two competent players can do pretty well for themselves but you wont get anywhere dungeon diving alone. Also my T3 experience so far is a bunch of mouth breathers brute forcing the 100 energy respawn costs and getting mad at me when I don't want to pay for the death gates when I just want to get to a fucking ghost floor and get some owlite feathers.

Good luck buying any 4* gear outright and I don't think affording 5* is reasonable without buying energy, which means some crafting on your part (like Sei said sacrificing potential days of play time) and complete luck in regard to materials, both what drops or that a player will have some to sell at a reasonable price.

I'm convinced the fact that NPCs sell anything but recipes is a way to get new players to waste all their money then buy energy out of frustration. Seriously, I think vendors sell two star items at 15k crowns and any player will sell them for 3k.

All that, along with the fact that at this point I can look at what I need for my next step in gear and do the math to convert it into a three digit number in USD makes me pretty done with the game.

I got to make a few Talking Timer faces explode with how fast I went from 2* to 4* though so that was pretty worth it.

I've seen a good 4* sword (Vile Slicer, useful for Slime King) going for 800ce. I've seen some other 4-5* items going for over 1.7kce.
