Cleave
Chapter 1

The Cutting Stroke

I will tell you a story I know.

I know because I am a presence within the story, though I no longer identify with my past self and wish to remain known as a separate entity from It.

Shadow and figment and the third character introduced, I.

As I show you this, I die, and as a creature of chains I wish only this one bit of freedom and defiance: to have another share my pain. I have chosen you because you hate yourself as much as I do. I see your sins.

Sam and Amy. And a cat following along. The cat's name is Shadow.

Upon this day the young children arrived at their meeting spot at the same moment, each seeing the other simultaneously, each grinning identically and beginning to step faster in near perfect harmony, directing innocents to the known spot.

Where they met in a tiny riverbed, Sam took Amy's hand, and they began across the field, stepping nimbly from rock to ever-wet rock bestreaming the makeshift road. Sunlight dappled Sam's tawny hair and Amy's dark bangs flew behind her like the wispy tangled puffs of dying late-summer weeds that ranged to keep them safely in the burbling creek's coolness.

They would occasionally stop and drink water or play with some odd or end. Sam showed Amy a group of tadpoles. Amy showed Sam a flower she liked.

They played, and Shadow watched and stalked along, content to follow its master Sam and eat the occasional bug.

Along the dark and fallow shadow did appear, and followed these three. It knew no name, had no purpose, having been just born that moment by the coming evil of Sam. It was, in essence, the fixing of a paradox, for should not it Be, neither all of you. It entered the shadow of the cat, and waited there.

The cat walked over and sat beside Sam, who scratched his chin while Amy pulled a weed of mint and stuck a leaf in her hair. "I like the way mint smells." she said. "It reminds me of other times we went to the tree."

Sam nodded and stood, his fingers rubbing against his shirt to remove the cat dander and fur clinging there. "Last summer when your family left I cried a little, and then later I remembered what you said the year before. You said you'd come back, and then you did, so I wasn't as sad anymore."

Amy smiled and pushed her chin into her chest, twisting around and back as if rocked by a rough wind. "I told you I would Sammy."

They shared a smile as the cat disappeared into the weeds.
