Cleave
Chapter 1
The Cutting Stroke

Chapter 2
That Splitting Force

They meandered and soon came upon their forest and the first place where the ground began to slope upward. Birds sang memories into their heads, their third trip into this dark place already as magical and fun as they'd remembered. As the lush trees enclosed them and the dim green mist filled their nostrils with fresh and earthy smells, the cat silently met its end by my hand.

Sorry about that.

They walked deeper and eventually came to the place where Amy had, two years before, sat crying on a rotting log: Sam had found her.

Sam noted that Amy didn't flinch this time as she sat upon the log. "Last time you wouldn't sit there next to me. This time you just sat down!" he exclaimed, surprised.

"You made it ok," she replied, and patted the soft moss still eating their meeting place. "remember?"

He leapt over a rock and bounced down onto the soft mound of detritus. It sagged under his weight and collapsed. As hundreds of bugs swarmed out of the mushroomy muck Sam rolled backward and flopped into some grass on his belly. Amy had jumped up and now scrambled to his side to see that he was ok. Sam was laughing.

"Did you see that!? Hahaha. Look at all the bugs!" Sam turned his dirty, sweaty, red face toward Amy who grinned. "Glad you're not hurt."

Sam grinned in response to his own words from two years ago. "Me too." he teased, and stood and shook the dirt from his clothes.

"Tell you what." Sam suddenly said as they walked a bit farther into the forest. "Let's race to the tree!"

Amy frowned. "I dunno, Sammy. It's kinda far and I got lost here once."

Sam put his hand out. "I promise I can find you if we get separated. And I'll give you a head start. That way, if you get lost, just stand still and shout my name a few times. I'll find you."

Amy didn't look sure, but she nodded bravely. "I trust you, Sam."

She turned and ran off into the woods. I started to follow her with what I used then for eyes.

I think I knew at this time what I had done to the cat, and I knew I didn't like it. It was my first taste of death, and it left a bitterness in my mouth. I refused to repeat my previous actions if I could help them, and I did a fairly good job, even though I tried again that day to take a life, to my eternal regret.
