First and foremost do your part.

After that's done, Portal 2 general.

By the way, the "potatos are multipliers" thing is bullshit. It just appeared at one point in the irc channel and nobody could tell where it came from.

Haha, the game with the least progress right now is Amnesia. Looks like people are willing to do a lot of stuff for Portal, but shitting their pants in terror is low on the priority list. :whoops:

can you just leave a game running on your computer or do you have to be actively playing it?

That 2-3 days head start is about the only reason to buy the PC version thanks to that whole OH HEY FREE WITH PS3 VERSION thing.  Of course, those 2-3 days are pobably going to turn out to be important.

Just put down my preorder for the PS3 version bcause fuck that's the only way this game I not going to bug the shit out of me for the next couple months.

Or you know, saving ten bucks or more to not have a console version that I will never play.

Although I kinda hope for their sake that Gamestop is setting the trade-in price at $1 day one.

This whole thing, while cool, seems like smoke and mirrors. Two games cleared, and a bunch of games around 30% and the launch estimation has only gained a few hours under the original launch time. Remember that the game comes out on Tuesday, and it's already half way through Saturday.  This is better marketing for the games in the Potato Pack than it is a way to get Portal 2 early.

I didn't know anyone was "laboring" under a different assumption.

Did you read all the posts talking about a 2-3 day advantage? Because I saw them.

The hilarious thing is, knowing Valve, by the time the thing is complete, they'll have technical problems and will have to delay the launch by several hours.

Apparently only games with the full progress bar count. So, we've managed to pull the release to... 90 minutes earlier.

The value of a game's completion is based on how difficult it is to move the bar, so if, say, Killing Floor, easily the best selling game in the package, were to complete we would see a serious reduction in time. However, given that it has had about 5k+ CPUs going at any given time, and is still one of the least moved, that's unlikely to ever get completed.

Buying the games is easy.  Actually playing any of them is not worth it.

Super Meat Boy and Audiosurf are worth it, at least.

I don't know how entertaining Amnesia is to play, but I've watched like three LPs of it, and I can say it's at least entertaining to look at while it's being endured by somebody else.

So I was just thinking about the PS3 version and thought I was really on to something about it not being able to be bought used.
But then I figured that you would just not get the PC version with it.

BUT THEN I figured No. You CAN'T buy it used. Because it links your PSN to your Steam account.  So you'd have to let them get both that way. A simple keyreg wouldn't work to "unlock" the PC version like I had thought the second time.

Unless they don't care about just giving away copies of the PC version no matter what because then anyone with a PS3 can loan out his disc and give out unlimited versions of the game. Or will there be some sort of hardlocked code in the disc that only works for one PS3?

I kind of have a huge headache so I have a sneaking suspicion I am just being a dumb. But a very paranoid part of me thinks Valve is doing all this potato nonsense to get the DRM talk off their back until AFTER launch.

A simple keyreg would work actually if in fact it links your PSN with your steamid. Except you wouldn't need to input any keys like with most steam games.

There's no way a used copy will get you a free Steam copy of the game. Even a simple one time keygen tied to the disc would prevent that. You probably wouldn't even be able to tie it to your own PSN account, because of how that all seems to be interconnected. Valve have been fucking GameStop up the ass for awhile now, but this takes it to a whole new level. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of guys.

It sets an unfortunate precedent to keep this whole "bonuses only for first buyers" thing, but given the technical specifics of the offer I don't see any other way to do it.  If registration in any way shape or form affects how much you can play the actual console version though, Valve's setting themselves up for a pretty aggressive backlash.
