Best Star Trek Doctor
« on: May 03, 2011, 02:51:24 PM »

Again, this comes from a discussion I had with my friends. But they are significantly less scientific than our rigorous standards demand.

McCoy

Pros:
* He's a Doctor, not a whatever
* He's dead, Jim.
* Arguments with that green blooded goblin
* What is this, the dark ages?
* New Actor is Karl Urban

Cons:
* Didn't like Data

Beverly Crusher

Pros:
* Redhead
* Commander Rank
* Has the hots for Picard
* Destroys Borg ship using Solar Flare

Cons:
* Mother of Wesley
* Did not abort

Julian Bashir

Pros:
* Secretly a fucking badass who pretends to be a bumbling idiot in order to avoid being killed for being an Augment

Cons:
* Sort of annoying

The Doctor

Pros:
* Please state the nature of the medical emergency
* Opera singer
* Refused to kill Tuvix

Cons:
* Sort of annoying
* Joe? Seriously?

Phlox

Pros:
* Has three wives, is cool with you sexing them up
* Resistant to Borg Nanites
* Zookeeper Doctor
* Oh god the smile

Cons:
* Oh god the smile

Since it can be hard to pick, I have graciously allowed up to 2 votes for each person.

DeForrest Kelly might just be the original reason I have any interest in SciFi at all.

For some reason I loved Phlox completely. And I hated everything about Enterprise.

You just kind of want to hang out with the guy... I would not want to do that with any other Star Trek character.

I voted from the hip for McCoy, because I remembered the time he slapped a pregnant woman while examining her.

Edit: If I'd thought about it more I probably would've gone for Bashir.  DS9's my favorite (because it's the West Wingiest Star Trek) and Bashir is pretty great.

I voted for The Doctor solely because of the scene where he's like "We can give this patient holographic lungs in the meantime" and Chakotay goes "WTF, holograms are just light, how does that work" and the Doctor slaps him

If Bones and the hologram don't win I'll be shocked.

Crusher's fling with Picard was just awkward, and nobody watched DS9 or Enterprise.

The Doctor was fun.

Like, I was a big trek nerd when I was much younger. I mostly didn't like Voyager, but I still watched it now and again. Most of the characters were just awful people I wanted to see die in a fire (my biggest letdown with that series was that "Year of Hell" was predictably IT WAS ALL A DREEEAAAM). The Doctor was the one character that the really didn't count for - I liked watching him.

Of course then they went and wiped his memories, effectively killing the only character on the show who didn't make me want to destroy every sensory apparatus I had.

THANKS FOR PLAYING, VOYAGER. THANKS FOR PLAYING.

EDIT: Fixed.

Would have voted The Doctor over McCoy but I thank you for not making me have to act on that terrible decision.

Wasn't he referred to as Medical Hologram more often than Doctor though?  Just to make the point I guess.

Bashir was cool because he hung out with Garak all the time.

McCoy once prescribed alcohol as an anti-psychotic. If that's not the mark of a brilliant physician, I don't know what is.

I'm glad that you didn't include Pulaski in this poll, Friday. I would have found a way to anti-vote for her.

You mean Voyager. DS9 had Julian Bashir.

Errr yes. I have the dumb.

DS9 was a mixed bag for me. Some things I liked some I didn't. But I suppose I'm alright with it existing. Bashir was tolerably likeable on his good days, as were most of the regulars (except Kira, who usually would have been much better on the underside of a bus. Though I guess she had one or two decent moments).

Now Voyager... I definitely would have been happier if it had never see the light of day.

I wholeheartedly agree with SF Debris' calling Kate Pulaski "The Gorgon".

The writers tried to recapture the cantankerousness of Dr. McCoy, and I think the failing was in the writing.  Spock and McCoy had witty banter, but you got the feeling that it was all good-natured, and that neither REALLY held a grudge when one would one-up the other and they would have no counter.

With Pulaski and Data, however, she came off as racist, quite frankly.  I don't know what the story was behind Gates McFadden leaving the show.  I wonder if Pulaski had time to actually develop further than "Dr. McCoy with tits", she might be an enjoyable character.  Probably not, but until we hit one of those things like Worf did in Parallels, we probably won't know what would happen.

Or, I could have the great fortune of hitting a universe where Enterprise got cancelled in the first season, and Firefly was just getting renewed for its 8th season.

The sad thing is I agree with the poll results: Beverly was the worst doctor on the best show. Not that she was bad, really, just... boring. McCoy was cantankerous, Julian was charming, The Doctor was The Doctor, and Phlox was a weird alien guy. Beverly is just ... a normal doctor.

You know what, I had a second vote I didn't bother to use. She deserves some love, if only just for the unbelievable line: "If there's nothing wrong with me, there must be something wrong with the universe."

That might just be the greatest line in Sci-Fi.
