Most mini bases are about .75' round, so maybe something like this:

They have a couple interesting ideas here as well: http://hirstarts.yuku.com/topic/5036

EDIT: I'm pretty sure all official D&D minis have exactly 1" round bases, so that in theory you could play gridless and just see if the bases are touching.

Ha! I came up with BOTH my ideas independently. I must say the stairlip one is clever!

I'd say don't get too big for your britches planning complex pieces. You have a VERY solid basic idea and need to get that done with first. Specialty pieces increase price, lowering demand. I say start with the simple blocks and then use the money you make to develop specialty pieces to sell in a more expensive booster pack.

A large, unfold-able printed 1' squares mat is cheap to make and toss into each box for an extra, and lets the players avoid having to lay down a 'base layer' of blocks right out of the box. But even that is superfluous as most DM's already have one or make them out of cardboard like every week (raises hand).

Yeah, actually, for now I'm just going to say if you want stairs, represent them abstractly with two 1/4" pieces stacked.

Totally.

Edit: Stairs in real life are not 1:1, they are much closer to 1:2, so 1/3" blocks would be better suited for this. Also, there is never an upstairs level at 5', they are usually at closer to 7 or 8'.

But now we are talking about making 1/4" and 1/3" blocks, so I have to ask what the 1/4" blocks are for and would they be better off being 1/3"?

This would make minis more stable but the bottom layer would float a little bit off the table. Only by a 1/16 of an inch, but still.

I see no problem with that as long as they are all uniformly thus. They don't need to be so deep, though. 2/3rds that would probably be fine. And you wouldn't so much care if they fit snugly together top/bottom since gravity.

Ooooh, why don't you make some sheets with indentation for the squares to fit into? Like those flat Lego bases.

The initial picture had a smaller floor layer, which looked like it was a base to put things on.  So they wouldn't need to float off the table!  Or what Buge said.

Now you are talking about making another mould. So far he has just two moulds to make: 1" cube and 1/?"x1"x1" box. The problem with that is that CNC machining a mould for every piece is expensive. And he's already making treasure chests. Every new original part has to have a mould made.

Bam!

And G is correct, the idea is to have as few molds as possible; in fact I might be limited to just one, in which case I will probably do 1/2" pieces. The treasure chest is actually going to be 3D printed rather than cast, since it's only a collectible.

Here's what I'm wondering: How do the horizontal ones on the tree stay in place? There's nothing to prevent them from sliding out the bottom, it appears to me?

The design is not finalized yet, but my prediction is it will simply be friction. The ridges are actually the same height as the studs on a LEGO, and should simply stick snugly in place.

However, I am prototyping several different methods to see which works best.

I reworded the IndieGoGo page a lot because I was getting so many complaints about how, "You don't get a set of blocks if donate."

Finally got my hands on the prototypes. I'll have some video up soon.

The friction fit seems to be totally feasible.
