Racial Stereotypes: Racist, or Not Racist?
« on: June 27, 2011, 02:13:31 PM »

(SPLIT BY THAD.  Context: Brown v EMA opinion, where, among other things, Scalia notes that people who want to control the distribution of video games due to objectionable content like racism are quite clearly attempting to restrict the dissemination of ideas they disagree with.)

To be fair, Resident Evil 5 is pretty much entirely going on safari to kill the scary negroes and steal their gold.  Might just be how Japan sees black people but everybody looks like this even before they're zombies.  And that's not even the tribal swamp levels.

Do you understand how terrifying the words “vibrating strap on” are for an asexual? That’s like saying “the holocaust” to a Jew.

Black people aren't allowed to look scary ever.

It's racist.

Do you really need it explained why there's a difference between what you said and a Great White Hunter blowing away a village of these guys to take their gold?

Yes, I need to be told why killing black people is worse than killing white people.

The problem is that you see that picture and all you think is "black person".

So it's not that they're black, it's that they look more like people than zombies? Why bring race into it at all?

Dude, I understand that you think it's a double-standard for us to approve of white zombies (even when killed by a black guy, as in, say, Left 4 Dead) yet disapprove of black zombies, but it's not that simple. Nobody here objects to the fact that, say, Brad Garrison becomes a zombie in Dead Rising, because he is a rounded character with qualities and flaws independent of his race, while "some menacing village in remote Africa" is a caricature of attitudes about Africa, particularly when used as a setting by a Japanese company, which is comprised of people not largely from the cultures they're painting with a broad brush.

tl;dr you know how black people get to use racial slurs with one another and it's "okay" yet when a white person does it, it's racist? White people don't get to complain about that, and if you don't understand why, you need to reexamine your attitudes toward race.

Have you seriously ever seen a single black person who looks like that?  Even in National Geographic?

Why bring race into it at all?

Why bring race into an obvious racial stereotype?  Well gee.

If it was a bunch of black African dudes fighting black African zombies, alright, let's do this. But no, it's Mr. Americapants McWhiteass taking a break from killing Mexican zombies to hate on black zombies a bit (while macking on a cafe-au-lait chick that's the kind of black you only see in cellphone commercials).

Imagine if I made a game where two burly men are relentlessly attacked by hordes of zombie women. Would I sell one million copies or ten million?

I don't think any ah my niggas have a problem with playing a white guy shooting black dudes and it really doesn't become an issue unless you a bunch of whities people disconnected from the issue directly of indiscriminate race make it one.

Explain to me how this:

is any less an accurate representation of a figure from the region the game is set in connected to dark arts and zombies than this:

Ah yes, who could forget the centuries of persecution of white people based on the common stereotype that they are all purple-robed sorcerers?

That's not also part of a centuries-long series of a racial majority depicting white people dressed like that to dehumanize them.

I can't believe there is actually somebody who doesn't understand that racial stereotypes exist.  Things like this or this.

buge i am pretty sure that is a tone argument

tone arguments are bad because they say you can't just scream at people until they stop listening

What Büge posted is similar to a tone argument in that it concerns the method of expressing outrage, except rather than modulating the outrage through some kind of "pleasance filter", it's advice about how to keep the progenitor of outrage from slipping out from under the accusation. It's about focusing on what has actually been said rather than on who the person is.
