This game deserves its own thread.

Good:
 • fucking beautiful
 • plays well
 • music and narration make it sound great
 • comparatively unique atmosphere
 • the counter mechanic has a large enough timing window that the shield can be used as a reliable weapon, and is probably my favorite weapon so far
 • missed items from levels are purchasable
in the Lost'n'Found
instead of missed
 • Jawson fucking Bog
 • fine-grained (independent adjustment of monster damage, monster speed, etc.) sliding difficulty scale with rewards via
shrine
Bad:
 • some of the art that looks like terrain can't be walked on, but the falling penalty is negligible
 • the asdw control scheme has you moving on an 8 directional basis. The paths are angled at roughly 30 degrees, but if you move up-right, you're moving at a 45 degree angle, so walking paths is initially a bit wonky. (Turns out there's a fix for this: add -isomovement to your launch shortcut.)

More good: unlike in most games like this, weapons aren't linearly better with each one you find. They're all at least fine and most of them are strong in different situations. Upgrade options compare ok with each other, but can be switched, so you don't need to play through the game twice just to see what all the upgrades can do.

Also, new game plus is sweet. Totally owning all the monsters you fought the first time through is always fun.

Bad: I'm not a huge fan of the infinite breakable knicknacks, they clog up the levels with tons of extra rocks and shit.

Norondor I just want to let you know that your title is amazing and I am constantly looking for a place to use it in casual conversation but the situation has not come up

Re: Bastion:

I saw the ZP review and he didn't eviscerate it so I assumed it couldn't be too bad. But I haven't taken the time to look up gameplay videos.

This means absolutely nothing other than he didn't find an entertaining enough flaw to fill 5 minutes with.

Mentioned it awhile back and I find my self taking my time with it still. I will just pop it on do a level or two and hop off and feel satisfied for a week. The narrating is the best part of the game for me.

On a whim while waiting for a friend at another friend's house, I watched yet *another* friend play through the Bastion demo. It looked fun, and it was interesting in how the narration thing was presented, suggesting it wasn't just another gimmick. I was very interested. It hooked me before I even played it myself somehow.

The next day, I was staring at the Steam store, trying to convince myself not to buy it. It looked REALLY good and I still had half of The Witcher to play through and then Mass Effect 1 and 2 and Dead Sp... oh, I just bought it. Damn.

It's okay though. It may have been the best 15 dollars I have spent in a long time, and probably the best game I've played in the last 2 years and is in my personal top 3 games easy. It was solid, it was colorful, it was... well. Probably the most poignant game I've experienced since Metal Gear Solid 3. And it was a much better *game* too. Manly tears were shed.

If you haven't played it yet, you should. No, actually you *must.*

This reminds me a lot of a game I worked on at a game company, except this one is well thought.

The narration bit's awesome. I keep expecting it to let me down and it doesn't.

The block mechanic, I don't like so much.

That's because the real block mechanic is rolling.

My biggest problem in this game is aiming, but dual pistols and the flame thrower are a good combination for dealing with that sort of thing.

DAT ENDING. DAT MUSIC. Also, yes, I'm a year behind, but fuck it. Also also, I ran around with the machete and the musket for the most part - permanent poison damage and double-firing shotgun? Yes sir, thank you. That being said, the last ranged weapon you get is roflcopters overpowered, especially at max speed and homing.
