The rumors I've read suggest that they're not thinking of anything as foolish as recasting Han Solo

Today's rumors are different.

That's not going to work unless they sign Sean Patrick Flanery and Corey Carrier.

Did anyone ever actually say that Jango was incapable of having a child normally?  I read it just as "Jango wanted a regular clone of himself", like a lot of people do.

Of course, pretty much nothing that Jango does in the movies makes a lick of sense, so who knows.

I don't think there's anything wrong with him medically. The unaltered clone was part of the "payment" he got for being the genetic template for all of those other clones.

Reading further, it seems he was big on the "live alone, work alone" thing, so he refused relationships.

My point is merely, here is a dude who wants to have a son but does not want to have sex with a woman in order to do it.

That is not typical.

Certainly it happens -- there are, after all, single women who choose artificial insemination to conceive -- but it's one of those things that implies some sort of psychology and history to a character that is never explained or even approached and indeed seems like Lucas never even thought about it.

I just attributed the lack of LGBT characters in Star Wars to the fact that the only two characters to have a romantic relationship across all six movies were Han and Leia.

Well, obviously Lucas couldn't have any more characters get involved; he might decide they were related to each other and then it would be weird.  Again.

He never asked for a son, though, he asked for a perfect genetic copy.  Either he wanted to ensure that "he" would exist after his death (in which case he would have named the kid Jango) or his own childhood was so fucked that he wanted to vicariously have a second chance.  Or he just hated the idea of sharing his DNA with anyone.

Or he was a pervert.

Well, right, and that's the thing -- you have to fill in those blanks yourself.  You have to make up a reason.

There is a reason for behavior like that.  It is not something where a guy just goes "I think I'll raise a clone of myself."

My point, as usual, is that the justifications for the behavior we saw onscreen would have been far the fuck more interesting than what we ACTUALLY saw onscreen.

(Of course, there's an argument to be made that the very heart of fandom ITSELF is based on that fundamental premise.)

Hey, given the option, I dunno.

Shit, even if he decided to do it just for the sheer hell of it, THAT would be information I'd like to know.  Jango Fett as just an egomaniac with poor impulse control?  THAT would be a great movie.

Yeah, I don't think it's THAT bizarre, in the final analysis. There's at least a half-dozen decent workable reasons that come to mind pretty easily.

The thing was, if it was an enigmatic unexplained plot point in a well-structured and well-written movie, it would have worked. I like the sort of poetic idea that Boba Fett was a mystery, then by seeing his younger self we solve a lot of that mystery, but gain a new mystery in his father.

But because Jango's motivation and backstory was yet another question mark in a jumbled incoherent disaster, it feels worse than it might otherwise have.

In-character reasoning aside, I think the real life reason Jango decided to raise a clone of himself is so that an exact clone of Boba Fett could be in the movie and shoot lasers and rockets at Jedi.

So apparently the two writers who're going to be working on the Han Solo/Boba Fett mies are...

Lawrence Kasdan. Hey that's good.

And Simon Kinberg. Oh hey what did he do?

*looks*

X-Men 3
Mr and Mrs Smith
Sherlock Holmes (1 of 5 writers)
XXX2
This Means War

Well yes.  That's the problem.  That's the exact amount of thought Lucas puts into ANYTHING.

Yeah, I mentioned back in November that they were the guys tipped for Episodes 8 and 9.  I wonder if this means the spinoff films ARE episodes 8 and 9, or they're working on both, or plans have changed, or there's been some misunderstanding somewhere down the line.

Issue #2 is out; not a whole lot happens.  Boba Fett's appearance is completely superfluous, as is the dogfight that Luke and Wedge take part in.  There's some interesting stuff brewing with Leia putting together a black ops group, and the admiral who's just taken over Vader's Star Destroyer, but it's too slow a burn for my tastes.  I'm not saying I want more action, I'm saying I want more STORY; this is too decompressed.

ET interviews Hamill.  Not much new information -- he doesn't know the plot of the new films; he, Ford, and Fisher are all in talks to return but haven't signed contracts yet.

His sensibilities seem a lot like mine -- he wants more practical effects and wants to tell stories about the silly little minor characters, like the band in the cantina or that weird little critter that works for Jabba.

Also:

Quote
In the gritty gangster flick Sushi Girl, out on DVD and Blu-ray now, Hamill plays against type as Crow, a wisecracking, sadistic criminal who is a bit light in the loafers

Against type?  Someone should probably tell Entertainment Tonight what role Mark Hamill has been playing for the past two decades.
