What gets me is all the billboards around advertising Star Wars 3D.

This release is not in 3D.

Ah, but they are going to be releasing it in 3D.

In theatres.

In chronological order.

Right, but that's his point: this isn't a case of Lucas tricking people into buying two versions of the original trilogy on DVD by lying and saying that the original editions wouldn't get a DVD release and then releasing them the next year; this is a case of telling everybody UPFRONT that there's going to be another release and counting on them to buy both.

Attributing everything directly to Lucas absolves the legions of marketing dickheads that he's staffed his company with.  Let's spread the finger-wagging here.

Lyrai, don't forget the old Marvel comic books.

Will it be possible to get the theatrical release ever?

They're doing what he hired them to do.

It's rather hard to believe that the constant rereleases and tweaks are anyone's idea but his own.  Not just from his own statements, but from what Kershner and plenty of others who've worked with him have said over the years.

Which, you're right, isn't to deny he's got enablers, from his employees down to the people who keep buying the goddamn things.

HA!

Quote from: George Lucas
People who alter or destroy works of art and our cultural heritage for profit or as an exercise of power are barbarians, [a]nd if the laws of the United States continue to condone this behavior, history will surely classify us as a barbaric society.

The difference, as he's pointed out, is that he's altering his OWN films, not other people's.

How exactly does that make a difference? Should Jasper Johns be allowed to hack up his Flag paintings and make a new, somewhat different flag out of them because they're HIS paintings?

Erm, provided we're talking about paintings he owns and not ones sitting in a museum or someone else's private collection?

YES.  Of fucking COURSE he should be ALLOWED to.  What kind of ridiculous question is that?

That's a completely separate issue from whether it's a good idea or whether he should be ENCOURAGED to.

The original theatrical release - Vaseline on the camera lens and all - is on disc 2 of the above releases. Up until about 10pm last night they were $7 each, then suddenly fucking jumped to $25+ each.

I agree with you and everyone else that it's a terrible idea to keep changing the films.  I mean, no shit; is there anyone saying it's a GOOD idea?

I agree that it's ironic that somebody who fought so hard against the colorization of films is now addicted to repeatedly altering his OWN films.  As I did when South Park made that point a decade ago.

However, editing your own films isn't PRECISELY the same thing as buying up the rights to a bunch of other people's films and editing THEM.  Lucas's position may be ironic, but it's not logically inconsistent.  (Except, I suppose, in the case of Empire, which he did not direct.)

Legally, of course both those things are permissible.  Ethically, well, ethics are personal and subjective; I'd argue that it would be best to leave old shit alone but that it's more ethical to hack your own shit up than somebody else's.  Financially?  Well, maybe he'll quit doing it if people quit buying the goddamn things.

It's not like the original films are lost to history.  It's more like if Michaelangelo made another David with a giant veiny erection and then set it next to the original David.

Depictions of tiny penises was because it was considered good to have youthfulness back then.

Really, really, really small youthfulness, if you get my drift.

Lucas is trying his best. The world will not cooperate in any way shape or form, but by God, he's trying.
