Red Orchestra 2: Owldof Hootler
« on: September 14, 2011, 10:21:04 PM »

Ok, so Smiler, James and I got this, the best parts so far have been when  Smiler and I are working together and we manage to be awesome because of teamwork, I was machine gunner and Smiler was Assault, he unloads his SMG on the enemy, gets 3 kills and starts reloading, 2 more come running around the corner because they hear the click of him reloading and I, not having enough time to deploy just go rambo and rocknroll them down with the machine gun at point blank, then we head upstairs, not realizing we are almost standing in their spawn, we managed to kill 2 more each before the next re-spawn wave over ran us. Also, second favorite moment was seeing three people behind weak cover, spraying across them with the machine gun before having to duck down and bandage and then slowly getting 3 bleed to death kills from them because I managed to hit them all in vital areas with a single 10 shot spray.

Pretty much, It's got some slight annoyance in the net code that makes certain maps a bit not optimized for mid/low end systems, like Smiler's rig has some very light frame rate issues on a couple maps but other than that it's pretty good. I like that the game is realistic in that if you hit someone center mass they are basically dead, arms and legs are the only place that isn't an outright bleed to death. I also LOVE the kill Icon for certain things, like there is a special icon you can get when you kill someone by shooting them in the heart or gut.

The netcode is fine, they just really fucking sucked at optimizing the thing. Some people from beta have said that performance has dropped over time. It's still hella fun and since it is Tripwire making this game as long as they don't go under the game is only going to get more patches.

Also if you give a shit get games has a sale for I don't know how much longer. 24 bucks. http://www.getgamesgo.com/product/red-orchestra-2-heroes-of-stalingrad It is steamworks.

This game is also hard to get used to, since you will get dropped a lot until you learn where the enemies are and how to move without being a huge target. It might not be fun to some people.

It also has crazy realistic damage models, and rather than regenerating health, it has a "if you get shot, even if it doesn't kill you outright, you're probably bleeding out" system. They actually model where your heart is, for instance, and getting shot in it is an instant kill. Also, rather disturbing animation blends into ragdoll watching someone become all wobbly as they bleed out, and finally topple over. They can still desperation shoot you at this time, so don't enjoy the scene too much.

The joke in the thread title is that last night the server Mali and I were playing in had a dude named Owldolf Hootler on our team. At one point he was praising a played named xXxSephirothxXx as being the jewel of the Third Reich. Most of the servers are going to be filled with Nazi sympathizers who will call you a jew whenever they are mad about something, but there are a few with some cool dudes in it.

This game has some weird terrain. Here I am in the best cover imaginable. All I had to do is move forward and then bam I am the levitating german.

I do not understand why it uses both VAC and Punkbuster.
Especially considering the issues that punkbuster has (false positives, doesn't auto-update properly an unacceptable amount of the time and last but not least thinking the Steam overlay is a hack )

If you ever wanted the closest thing to a closet nazi sympathizer zoo this is the game for you. Hang out with your new friends SS Adolf Hitler and Jewkilla666! Or maybe just troll them. It's your call.

Oh and this game is pretty baller. Running into a ruined building and gunning down a ton of unsuspecting enemies is the best thing. It takes some getting used to, but you will never feel better about getting kills in a video game once you get good at the game.

I'm guessing this is what he means by nazi sympathizers.

Owldolf Hootler is a joke name and that dude was awesome. Dudes who have crazy SS tags and yell loudly about jews are serious. RO1 had the same kind of player base where 50% were neo nazis, 25% were historic rp clans, and 25% were people who just wanted to play WW2 shootan game. There are literally droves of people on the TWI forums who bitch about people who bring up the fact that a lot of the maps right now are heavily biased towards the axis right now. And it is always true, because I think the rate is like 10 axis victories to 1 allies victory. EXCUSE ME SIR BUT THE GERMANS HAD THE SUPERIOR FIREPOWER SO IT IS NATURAL THAT THEY WIN MORE.

Oh speaking of which the german Pz4 tank is way stronger than the russian t34 in this game. They should be more even historically, but stuff like the crazy ricochets the t34 enjoyed doesn't happen as often in the game.

Two friends of mine were talking about this game after I brought it up and one said "okay so my choices are a godless communist heathen and a fascist fuckwad who wants to kill everyone including himself. where are the good guys?" The other friend responded, "In the west."

It scares me that there are serious neonazis playing this game.

Why is it so hard to convince people that story/background/fluff is not an excuse for poor game balance?

Because it's a realistic military shooter. Day of Defeat had similar weapon "imbalance", which was largely rendered null by each side having demonstrably better weapons in different areas. If you want balance in a military game, don't play one that's billed as stringently realistic.

So that means that 10 Russians can join for every 3 Germans, right?

Russian team is always on defense, and wins automatically after thirty minutes.

Nex played with Smiler and me, we did pretty shit because BAAAD commanders, so Smiler and I steal commander roles and start doing well, next map? Smiler was 2nd place and I was 3rd.... I would have been higher but people on our team kept running into active morter strikes and dying(It strikes 6-10 times 2-3 seconds apart So it's not like it's something you don't NOTICE) so I had negative 18 points for team killing.

I still don't really know what's going on in this game, but I spawn and run out and die and I have this pattern down pretty good. Sometimes I kill people and then I say "holy shit I got a kill" but this is pretty rare. I've killed a lot of teammates (Sorry, Smiler. All I saw was a sudden uniform drop in front of my rifle).

The game is fun but it takes getting used to. I was expecting something... Else. But it's still a good game.
