The Dwayne McDuffie Memorial DC Animation Thread
« on: February 28, 2009, 10:16:58 AM »

Timm's next DTV: Green Lantern: First Flight.

Makes sense -- after Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and the Justice League, GL seems like the next logical step.  Smart money says Flash is next after that.

...so it turns out Greg Weisman is in charge of the new Young Justice cartoon.

Three things:
1. I suddenly care about Young Justice;
2. This softens the blow of Spectacular Spider-Man's cancellation just a bit but
3. not only does it not answer the question of why the fuck Disney cancelled Spectacular Spider-Man just to turn around and do a new Spider-Man series, it also brings up the question of why the fuck Cartoon Network cancelled Teen Titans just to turn around and do a new Teen Titans series.

UPDATE: A friend of Screen Rant working on the project has told me Young Justice will not follow any extent timelines or exist within the world of the DCAU, nor will it be part of the Brave and the Bold universe.

Coming next year: Green Lantern with a big CGI Bruce Timm chin.  It'll be set almost entirely in space, and won't feature Sinestro at first.  Looking forward to it -- the direct-to-video stuff's been hit or miss, and it's nice seeing Timm come back to TV where he can really take his time and build a universe.  And GL's a really rich one with a lot of potential.

There's some good stuff in that article about Weisman's upcoming Young Justice toon, too -- and another recent article notes that Timm wants to go back to Batman Beyond at some point.

Why is there nobody talking up the Young Justice pilot? It was pretty great. I could do with less of the info-dumps at the start, but the team dynamic has really won me over.

I was enjoying it right up until Captain Cold.  They made him look like an idiot. Just shooting randomly. It shouldn't bother me that much but that's his thing. Captain Cold is smart, cool, and deadly. And he prides himself on his experience with the Flashes.

Ooooooh well.

Except Mr. Freeze is smart, cool and deadly and they needed to distinguish their four identical villains somehow to do their thing.

Mr. Freeze is bald!

I will need to see more of Miss Martian the characters to see if I'll stick with Young Justice. They all have their niches, but I want to see a show about Aqualad -- not the Tough, Noble Guy.

Early days yet, but it's off to a perfectly decent start.

Does a good job of carving itself out a niche right from the beginning -- it's different from Teen Titans, not just in terms of visual style but also in cast, tone, and premise -- we've already seen the cast out of costume, and the grownups are present in this one.

Interesting damn choice for a Justice League, too -- I was definitely not expecting
Zatara
.  And was that
Hal AND John
?

I think Cadmus has been trotted out a bit too much over the past few years, but it's interesting to see them playing up the DNA Project origins (I did not actually know until I hit up Wikipedia that Cadmus is just the DNA Project with the groovy 1970's Kirby name stripped off).

High hopes for this one.  If there's a bad Weisman show -- or, hell, a bad Weisman episode of somebody else's show -- I haven't seen it.

According to internet scuttlebutt, the team will eventually have two more members in addition to the soon-comer who's in all of the promotional shots. That's why I'm guessing
Zatara
is in the League.

You know, I love Greg Weisman, so it pains me to say this, but...three episodes in and Young Justice still just isn't very good.

Ep 3 alleviates the sausagefest of the first couple episodes slightly, mostly by making Miss Martian the only likeable character in the cast, but it still fails part 1 of the Bechdel Test.

Show's got potential, but God dammit the best thing it's done so far isn't even a real scene from the show.  And I want to give it time, but I've never had to give a Weisman show time before; I was in love with Spectacular Spider-Man before the opening titles, and Gargoyles almost as quickly.

See if next week's is any better, but I don't know if I can give it any longer than that.

Fillion as Hal in GL animated movie.

Which means he's now been voiced by two guys from Firefly AND Angel.

...would be neat if he were the voice on the new series, too.  IMDb says it's going to be Josh Keaton (who would also be a great choice!), but IMDb used to say that James Lipton wrote the Thundercats theme.  Best not trust their credits this far out.  (They also have Robert Englund down as Sinestro, even though every interview I've read has said he won't be in the first season of the show.)

I've been on a torrent kick, recently. Just did all of Young Justice. I like the bit in the fifth episode where Batman tries to get Superman to accept Superboy. There's just something, I don't know, ironic? About Clark Kent, who was adopted, yelling at Bruce Wayne, a foster father, that Superboy "isn't [his] son!"

Yeah, that was probably my favorite scene to date.

Superman's behavior toward Superboy -- and Batman's concern as a father figure -- run totally against their typical characterizations, but I think they work particularly well.

And hey, in episode 6 the show finally passes the Behdel Test!  Granted, Miss Martian hasn't had a line of dialogue that wasn't about Superboy since episode 3, but...it's at least a small measure of progress.  I think Weisman's playing the long game here and the characters are slowly becoming likable, but I still think they've been handled poorly up to this point, particularly Miss Martian.

Other highlights: this show's got the best costume design I've ever seen for Bane.  The costume designer for Dark Knight Rises might want to take a look.

I also like the bit where Kid Flash sees the chemical compounds and instantly recognizes them.  Not what you'd expect from him, but it totally makes sense given Barry's day job.

Oh, and the show also managed the unfortunate coincidence of hitting the "Who is the MYSTERY TRAITOR?" cliche at the same time as Avengers.  Whoops!

Anyway.  All in all, my opinion of Young Justice hasn't changed much since the beginning -- there's real potential here, and it's frustrating as hell that the characters are so poorly written.

I'll admit I need to catch up the episodes, but Dead-Beat Dad Superman just sounds like the worst.

Dwayne McDuffie passed away unexpectedly. Everyone watching some JLU and especially the couple of episodes with Static in them would be a nice tribute, I think.
