I remember someone on Spectacular Spider-man mentioning that they made sure every name they used on screen belonged to an existing Spider-man character whether they had plans to use them or not.  They like to leave the hooks out, just in case.

YOUNG JUSTICE

Not sure how much I liked the episode overall. I'm very glad the show's back and I like that they didn't wrap up the
Roy Harper
arc so succinctly, but I felt the whole thing didn't spend enough time with other characters, given the three months off. That said, the grotto scene was great, and opened up what could be an interesting Batfamily story. Or it could just be a reference. This show is really good, but you really don't ever know which small things will become part of it.
The
engagement party fight
was a neat idea, but it was a secondary arc with about 10 seconds of screentime, really would've preferred expanding it to a third of the episode or so or just dropping it entirely.
Roy's fight with Mercy and Lex was really impressive and the planning that went into it from both Roy and Lex was really spot on for both of their characters.
Greg Weisman.  Same showrunner, and the guy who wrote this episode.

And yeah they used
OTIS
for God's sake.

Anyway.  Did
Mercy's
lasers sound like Dalek lasers to anyone else?

I felt the whole thing didn't spend enough time with other characters, given the three months off.

Sure, but you don't think the writers had anything to do with Cartoon Network's bizarre scheduling, do you?

That said, the grotto scene was great, and opened up what could be an interesting Batfamily story.

Yeah, interesting to get confirmation that
Jason
exists in this universe.  And the bit with
Ted
was sweet.

Who was the lady?  Terra, Jericho, anybody I should recognize?

Would be HILARIOUS if it was Stephanie Brown but I'm pretty sure it's not.

I know it wasn't the show's fault for the huge gap, but that same gap happened with season 1. I would've thought it would be expected, this go-round. As far as hooks out, yes. And as far as Rico's spoiler, yes.

Yeah, I suppose it DID happen 7 episodes in, last go-round (not including the pilot).

Then again, there was no gap whatsoever between seasons 1 and 2.  Which actually worked out way better for season 2's big twist, but I don't think Weisman knew that would happen.

That's
Tula
, isn't it?

Oh right.  That makes sense.

Caught Kevin Conroy's name in the storyboard credits this week.  Another guy with the unlikely same name, or does Mr. Conroy have previously unknown skills he's brought to the table?

MEANWHILE, Green Lantern's back too.  I quite liked the Guy Gardner episode!

It's interesting how clear it is that this is a cheap episode from the limited number of sets and the mostly-boring-and-repetetive choices of constructs, but how easy it is to forget that it's only got like four voices in it.  Definitely a sign of the quality of the cast -- and Andrea Romano, the best director in the business.

Nice hearing Diedrich Bader back in DC.  He's not the voice I hear in my head for Guy (that'd be Bruce Campbell) but he certainly makes it work; the episode makes a great, fun introduction for the character and makes him funny but ultimately human and relatable.

Plus it's the first episode set (almost) entirely on Earth, which is interesting.

I can't say I'm impressed by the choice of the Anti-Monitor as a villain (not a spoiler; that's the very first scene of the episode), but as I've noted before, the Green Lantern only has two good villains, one of them is off the table, and the other is in fact in this episode.

There's one more that's aired but I haven't seen it yet.  I guess it's got Ch'p in it.

(And, apropos of the thread title, Hal and Guy get wings at a place called McDuffie's.)

Indeed: Ch'p, Tomar-Re, the caterpillar guy, and the diamond guy.  What this episode lacked in sets it made up for in new characters.

(And it DID lack in sets.  I guess the nice thing about making all the Manhunter bases identical is it saves on the design budget.)

Well, they last-minute decided Young Justice wouldn't air again this weekend. I'm beginning to think this may be the end.

Well, GL's listed as not having any upcoming episodes scheduled, too.  While I certainly won't rule out "another Greg Weisman show got cancelled", it may also be down to shit getting preempted for holiday scheduling.  Seeing as holiday scheduling now lasts three damn months.

Or just general CN stupidity.  Remember Scooby Doo going away for a year with no explanation and then suddenly spitting out 15 new episodes over three weeks and then going quiet again?  Hell, near as I can tell they did pretty much the same thing with The Garfield Show, except without even AIRING the second season.

Off 'til January; nobody told GL producer Giancarlo Volpe and he is not happy about it.

I guess, best-case, the new Batman and Teen Titans cartoons will debut at the same time and they're trying to pull more eyeballs in with those.  Worst-case, it's just more of WB fucking with everything and deciding this version's not making enough money and it's time to flip the board again.

Young Justice continued to air in not-the-US. I found this out by stumbling across the most recent episode on a 100% legitimate streaming website. It is very, very good.
The promo blurb for the episode said the team, Miss Martian, and Blue Beetle would all discover secrets. The Blue Beetle secret was predictable with a startlingly good twist on the end; the Miss Martian secret was exactly what I expected it to be, but taken farther than I thought (I figured she would learn the conspiracy and stop short of raping Aqualad's brain), and I'm not entirely sure what the team learned. Maybe just about the Reach?
. Overall, A++ plan on watching again.

Brendon Connelly has compiled a list of purported reasons the block was yanked.  They're from anonymous sources, and it's Bleeding Cool, so grain of salt, but it all sounds plausible.

He talks about extra royalties for Milestone characters and poor toy sales both being potential problems, production delays in the shorts hurting the block, and, perhaps most alarmingly,

Quote
Work on Beware the Batman was not pleasing Cartoon Network, and an unannounced Justice League show wasn’t cutting it either, so the partnership started to disagree about future directions. Rather than plough on, they’ve decided to burn off the episodes so far produced, dissolve the block and deal with each future DC-themed show on an ad-hoc, one-by-one basis.

There's an especially telling entry in the comments section. It may be secondhand, but it is plausible.

So, I spoke to one of the former Producers of “Adventure Time” at the Alternative Press Expo this past weekend (won’t name names). Mainly because I knew he worked at Cartoon Network & I wanted to complain to someone about them cancelling “Thundercats”.
He said that whenever comedic cartoons, such as “Adventure Time” are the most popular (like now), CN pulls the plug on their action shows (and vice versa when action shows are more popular). What they do is pull the show off air for a few months, & then return it to the air without announcing or promoting it. Naturally, the viewers will have dropped off (no one knew it was coming back). CN then uses this rationale to drop the shows completely: “Well, we brought it back, but no one was watching.”
That’s exactly what they did to the new He-Man show back in 2003/2004. That’s exactly what they did to “Thundercats” last year.
And this is exactly what is going on with the DC Nation block right now.
So, if you have ears at Cartoon Network, let them know this sucks, because this could be really bad for the DC Animated shows.
Two more thoughts:
1) The “toys not selling” reasoning is flimsy. Mattel should be concerned about that, not CN. Besides, any time I go to Toys R Us or Walmart these days it’s almost impossible for me to find the super hero figures I’m seeking out, so how can they NOT be selling? I have yet to even see a Young Justice figure on the shelves at a regular store.
2) Why do the DC shows have to air on CN anyway? Why not CW on Saturday mornings, & then re-run them on like Hub or Qubo (sp?)?

Thanks,
–J.

They're actually running thundercats and symbionic titan on toonami right now, I'd like to think we can get something like what happened with Big O season 2 but maybe that's too much to hope for.

But what about when they canceled Sym-Bionic Titan and Batman AT THE SAME TIME?

Cartoon Network actually announces return of DC Nation Block, including Young Justice and Green Lantern

I'd read that Young Justice was returning in January, but it's nice to see Cartoon Network actually advertising and pushing the return.

Already saw Before the Dawn, but nice they're at least advertising them.  And leading in with Star Wars.
