Bay cast Peter Cullen.  That's nontrivial, but it's also about his only concession to the fans that was actually a good idea.

If this "TMNT are aliens" thing turns out to be true (it might not be -- I've seen people speculate that the comment was misinterpreted and only meant that the ooze is alien, which is of course consistent with the original comics) then it sounds an awful lot like Bay TMNT will be pretty much the same movie as Bay Transformers.

(Bears noting that Bay himself isn't the director.  But I doubt we'll be able to tell the difference.)

What I'd really love is to see the TMNT space opera I've always wanted.  But somehow I doubt that's what we'll get.

The thing I am wondering is how is Bay going to get his explosion fix if he is directing a movie where the protagonists can't just shit missiles?

Eastman and Laird's original TMNT drawing just sold for $71,700 at auction.

Buyer is anonymous.

I hope he (and I'm guessing it's a he) puts it in a museum.

Maybe a comic book museum.  If only such a thing existed.

Other than the go-kart launcher bit, I liked it. But I have the weird feeling I'm not supposed to.

No. No, you should not.

That being said, I love the aesthetic. But good god, that music.

I don't know. Music of shows we watched when we were younger weren't really that much better.
And at least it's not that horrible A:EMT intro. I say it ranks around "SPIDERBLOOD. SPIDER BLOOD. RADIOACTIVE SPIDERBLOOD"

I don't think it's nearly as bad as the '90's Spider-Man theme.  I thought it was a perfectly catchy update of the original theme.  (Though with the minor key it actually reminds me of the Neil Patrick Harris Spider-Man theme.)

I think it's got good bits of original comic, '87, and '03 Turtles.

And I thought "heroes in a half-shell" was a stupid fucking tagline even when I was 7.  That has not changed.

They are clearly not in half-shells.  That would require, you know, removing HALF THEIR SHELLS.  And I'll grant I've never eaten turtle, but is turtle on the half-shell even a thing?  Because I thought that was just oysters.  Why the fuck do oyster restaurants have to do with ninja turtles?

Arguably, because the breast-plate isn't as calcified as the back-plate, it's not really a shell.

But you're right, it's obnoxiously stupid no matter how you half it.

In the comments thread of a BoingBoing article about the delayed Alien Turtles movie, something hits me:

Quote

Wait a sec, I've just thought of something.

Is it possible that the rewritten origin could be an attempt at an end run around reversion?

Like, am I correct in assuming that Eastman and Laird (or their heirs) are entitled to regain the TMNT copyrights 56 years after original publication (ie in 2040), but that Paramount will retain all the trademarks?

So this could hypothetically mean that, come 2040, the creators/heirs reclaim the rights to the ORIGINAL version of the Turtles...but that Paramount still owns these alien Turtles, as distinct characters.

(Doesn't seem inconceivable to me that they'd be considered distinct characters; the original Superboy is legally distinct from Superman even though he's just Superman as a boy, and Wolfman's case for the Blade rights ended in a judgement that the character was so substantially changed between his original pitch and the published version as to be an entirely different character.)

Course, it could be I'm overthinking this and Bay just wants to do another movie based on an alien invasion by a popular 1980's toy/cartoon property.

Why couldn't it be both? Bay gets to direct his shlocky movie, Paramount gets a distinct set of characters to exploit and Eastman & Laird get the shaft.

Produce, actually, but sure, basically.

I think it's a bit late for Eastman and Laird to get the shaft no matter what happens.  Even if they don't get squat for anything TMNT-related for the rest of their lives they'll still die rich.

Alleged NT script leaked; not-at-all-biased site TMNT-Not-TANT described it as "worse than anyone could have ever imagined".  Which is of course a little bit of hyperbole, as (while I've only read a synopsis, not the full script) it sounds like it's pretty much exactly what I imagined.  It's Transformers, with turtles instead of cars.  In fact, it's SO MUCH like Transformers that it's setting off my bullshit detector.  Paramount apparently sent a takedown notice, which would suggest it's legit, except that I don't see any evidence that the takedown notice ITSELF is real.

So, grain of salt for now, but it's plausible.

Maybe I'm just cynical, but if someone tells me they have absolute proof of what they've been trying to convince people, but only they can see it, I tell them I probably shouldn't be hanging out with five-year-olds. Or they're Joseph Smith, Jr.

Well, the full script was up yesterday, and presumably still floating around the Internet even though it's been taken off the blog.

If it's a hoax, it's one that somebody -- probably multiple somebodies -- put a whole lot of effort into.

Bears repeating that he's producing, not directing.

If he were directing, the studio wouldn't be worried about the size of the budget or the quality of the script.
