None of the bodies are missing a hand.

After resting back to full HP for the low, low price of threetwo surges, Vivi solemnly accepts the hand and it's ring, simply stowing the hand into a pocket and slipping the ring onto her own finger with a smile.

"Child, pray wait a moment," said Pitamaha as he noticed Vivi playing with the hand. "Wait, I say! That may be unclean - cursed, or at least unsanitary."

(Religion check: 1d20+8=18, what do I know about mummification? If Vivi consents to the examination, what do I know about ouroburos-shaped bone rings?)

You sense some magical quality to the ring, but it doesn't readily identify itself to the wearer.

The hand looks like it comes from a mummified body several centuries old. Perhaps even a lich. No modern culture in Rynwold mummifies their dead this way.

Vivi pouts at Pitamaha... fiercely.

"Vivi," said Pitamaha patiently, "knowest thou that cursed rings cannot be removed? I should hate that I must ask Ampersand to cut off thy finger if it sticketh there." Such crude treatments weren't really necessary, but he knew the image would stick in her mind. The sooner he had gotten to see it, the sooner he'd be able to give those explorers their last rites... not that they hadn't been waiting a long time as it is.

Vivi growls and tries to take the ring back from Pitamaha, which is probably a laughable failure considering her negative strength and questionable dexterity. Also being a kid. She rants as she grabs at the ring!

"I don't care! I bet if it's cursed, I can wear it, and I'll be so great while I wear it, I'll BREAK THE CURSE! Then the spirit of the ring will say "Oh Vivi, thank you! HAVE A WISH!"" She makes one final futile lunge for the ring, probably falling short. "And then I could wish for parents!" She sits up and dusts herself up, then stands and pouts again. "BUT I SEE YOU DON'T WANT ME TO HAVE THAT, SO FINE!" She flips the chest over(only after it has been emptied of gold) and stomps off back towards the entrance of the cavern.

Rudiger gently bites Pitamaha's foot and then trots off after Vivi.

(Wait, I thought Vivi was still holding it. Anyway, somebody roll Arcana on this bad boy, and then give it back so we can go about our business. If Vivi's the one trained in Arcana, then I suppose she had it all along.)

Pitamaha regarded the corpses of the ill-fated explorers and murmured a prayer for their souls. He noticed the dwarf had been, like him, a worshiper of Amethyst, and solemnly examined his necklace. (Anything unusual about this? If not, I'll leave it with him.) What mystery had brought these people here? Why had he been so worried about writing? He picked up the loose page of the Pantheon and read it. (What's it say, assuming it's not too dark?)

"Better make sure Vivi doesn't twist her ankle or something on the way out," Briar says, hefting her pack. "Anybody else comin'? I'm takin' the lantern."

Francisca hands the page of the panthenon over to Pitamaha, she had been examining it after it fell out of the journal. "I'll grab that when you're done, I've been keeping all the documents safe in a waterproof bag in my backpack."

She looks over the bodies once more before heading off with briar. "I hope we don't end up like that sometime."

"To sleep forever in ignominy, deep in darkness..." said Pitamaha. "Pray thou that thy god hath not ordained for thee such a fate as this. But methinks I have had my fill of caverns. If we are well and no further business detaineth us here, let us egress."

With that battle, you all level up.

Pitamaha: The amethyst amulet has no special properties. It's worth no more than one gold.

It's a page from a story in the Pantheon known as The Razing of the Great Library. Like the other pages you've discovered, there are differences between this and the commonly accepted translation. These are marked in red.

The commonly known version of the story today names the third dragon Diamond.

Pfft! Vivi had it all along... obviously, Pitamaha is getting old because she was just able to snatch the ring back, of course. She stomps her way back to the front of the cave, though only stomping every other step because she twists her ankle on the way out. While limp-stomping along, she glares really intently at the ring. It must give it's secrets to her.

You successfully compel the ring to reveal its secrets:

The ring allows you to read, write and speak Draconic.

The ring allows you to communicate telepathically with dragons, within line of sight.

The ring allows you to, once per day, conjure the illusion of any dragon you've seen before.  It has a range of 40 squares, and the illusion has an AC/Fort/Ref/Will of 10. It lasts until the end of your turn or until an attack hits it or someone enters its space. You can sustain minor to make it persist and move it up to 10 squares, and a DC20+half your level Insight can tell someone that it's an illusion.

Vivi puts the ring on and rubs her hands together, grinning. Everything is going according to plan... ow! Damn ankle.

Francisca nods to pitamaha as he examines the page. "That might be interesting to you. You're a follower of amethyst, right?"

Briar makes her way into the tunnel, following her crude chalk-marks. She comes out into the entranceway and starts taking off her armour.

"Can't wait to get some shut-eye," she sighs. "Hey, you okay, Vivi? You seemed pretty mad back there. What was that all about?"
