Vivi sticks her tongue out and raspberries at Franny. "I'm fine! Don't look this way, you're messing up my style!" She has buttoned all the buttons and pulled snug all the straps on her old urchin's coat, and pulls it tight around herself before marching with renewed vigor!

The Rynwold Pantheon, Part 4: Ruins of Nythertan

The sun shines brightly in the cold air, illuminating the ancient white tower that stands in the middle of a large encampment. Several hundred people and huts are surrounded by a crude wooden palisade fence, but you can't make out any details at this distance.

The tower looks like the place marked on the map Seric gave you.

Five orcs on horseback pass you at a short distance, headed toward the encampment. They don't seem to have spotted you. Two of the orcs carry prisoners: a human, and a drow.

The drow is Ampersand.

Francisca quickly ducks down behind a rock, peeking out over the top of it. "What? How did that guy let himself get captured?" She whispers to the others.

Vivi slowly raises her head from behind an adjacent rock, at a rate conducive to an accompanying slide-whistle. She shifty-eyes back and forth between Franny and Ampersand. "Every sneaky guy is really great at his job until the one time he gets caught. And executed."

"What I'd like to know is how and why he got away from us," Briar grunts as she crouches down with the others. "Couldn't he've kept in line like a good boy? They're gonna make him sing, and then they'll come after us!"

She glances over at Francisca. "Wait, we're just passing through, aren't we? Maybe if he's lucky, they'll let him off with a warning and just cut off his hand."

Francisca looks over at briar and vivi, "What's the point of the warning if they cut off his hand! You'd think the warning would come a bit before the hand comes off."

She leans back against the rock. "I don't think we should let ourselves get caught just because he went off by himself, like usual, but if the opportunity comes up, we should try help him."

"You don't understand, Franny," Briar replies. "That is the warning."

She ponders the situation. "What're our options here? Think diplomacy'll work? None of us're good at sneaking as Ampersand, and attacking the place would be suicide."

Francisca rubs her forehead, thinking. "Ahh.. I guess we could try convince them that he's the son of a ruler from a far away land, and if they kill him, he'll send mercenaries to kill them all." She looks over at Briar, "How do you think they'd react to that? I don't want my hand to get cut off, I need it for writing!"

Vivi pulls on Franny's hair from behind, scowling. "You can't threaten people who enjoy battle. Why don't you appeal to them and see if he can make amends? ... You know, non-committal and uhm... you do it. We'll wait up here."

"No," Briar says. "Vivi, you and Grandfather stay here. Franny and I will go. If something bad happens, we'll give you a signal, so you two can regroup or something."

Francisca gives vivi a little shove, "Hey, watch the hair! It was just a suggestion! How do we know they like battle? They might be peaceful." She looks over at Briar. "I guess i'll have to read the mood as I get closer, Don't worry, i'm pretty good at that."

The human captive wakes up and starts talking with an orc. Ampersand is still unconscious. The rest of you can't quite hear what they're saying from this distance - something about slavery, perhaps?

The encampment is about a mile away. The orcs just rode past, in a field 200 feet away. You're in a wooded area on a hill and it doesn't look like you've been spotted yet.

"So should we sneak down? Or just wait for them to get inside and walk up the path? If we sneak up that might not be so great if we want to try diplomacy."

Vivi hunkers down with her back against a tree for a nap, pulling her head-band down over her eyes. "Walk up in plain view. They'll spot you when you talk at them anyways." Rudiger hops into her lap and curls up into a ball.

"I shall accompany you," said Pitamaha, "for behold, they show now they are willing to talk. Vivi, thou shouldst come as well; it behooveth us not to separate."

Francisca nods at Pitamaha, takes a deep breath, then starts heading down the hill towards the road.

Vivi raises her headband and glares at Grandpa for as long as she can manage. Basically until he turns around. Then she gets up and puts Rudiger on her shoulder before rushing Grandpa and jumping onto his back, arms around his shoulders for a piggy-back ride. "When I die, put one of my gold coins under my tongue, OK? I'll haunt you if you don't."

Briar grins. "C'mon, Vivi. If diplomacy don't work, maybe you can wow 'em with some magic."

She starts marching down the hill beside Francisca.

One of the orcs spots your approach and gives a shout. They wheel around in their horses and quickly draw longbows at you. The two at the rear start looking around at the hills.

"This is Urk-Ril land. State your business, and be thankful I did not kill you where you stand!"
