Gus turns, "Oh, did Kazrac take your weapons? All I've got is a staff and a dagger, so I guess he didn't consider me enough of a threat to take mine."

Francisca goes back to her notebook. "I Have to say I agree with Ampersand, I hate slavery, but slavery, unlike death, at least gives you a chance for freedom later on."

"Also, do you need a sword, ampersand? I could lend you mine, I've never actually used it." She says, gesturing to her longsword.

Looking down at the stew, she realises something. "Oh no.. There's not going to be many non-meat options at this feast, are there?"

"I fear there shall not," said Pitamaha. "For myself, I have fasted before, and will keep my vows, and fast again this night."

(That's going to be, what, an Endurance check?)

"I'm not sure what happens when you decline orc hospitality, but I'm sure it ain't pretty."

"Maybe you can do like Giant-Killer Jack in that old story, and put all your food into a little sack under your clothes instead of eating it. Then after dinner you stand up and show off how tough you are by slashing the sack open and letting the food spill back out. And hey, any orc who tries to prove themselves as tough as you by doing the same thing slashes their own guts open and dies, so there's that."

Pitamaha: You can go three days without food, but after that you have to roll Endurance.

It's late morning, and the feast isn't until the night. Is anyone doing anything before then?

I'm gonna eat some soup, at which point I can let Rudiger run free since Gus' condition for petting will be satisfied. Yum, soup.

Ampersand finds where / how to retrieve his supplies and does his fair share of skulking around

Quote
1d20 +13 : 1d20 +12
1 + 13 = 14 // 4 + 12 = 16
Unfortunately he stands out like a drow in a village of orcs.

Actually, 14 is enough to evade the notice of most of the town. They appear to be getting ready for a big celebration: building a bonfire in a clearing in the middle of the camp, slaughtering animals, rolling barrels of ale around. Two orcs with spears guard the white tower.

After all that, it turns out that your stuff is in the corner of Kazrac's tent where you started.

Ampersand gets ready to start strolling around naked to see if anyone notices.

But instead just hangs around all boringly clothed until the feast.

(Um, come to think of it I have no idea how to roll checks. Do we use dicelog.org? Do I need to send JD my email?)

Briar takes Francisca aside. "I got a problem, Franny," she says uneasily in a low voice. "I wanna ask these orcs if they're the ones who left me with the Claws, but these're people of Vaur'cha. If they find me nosin' around asking questions, they might get mad. But I can't just not ask! What do I do?"

Francisca puts a hand on Briar's arm. "Do you want me to come with you and ask? I Mean, I'm  a human, they know how much we talk and ask questions. I can say i'm doing it for a book, and you're my assistant."

"If we find one of the camp's elders, or someone who keeps records of what happened, like a storyteller, maybe that might be a good place to start?"

The kobold says, "Orcs have not much respect for their elders, so they are few here. Our eldest is Kiric, a blind shaman who remembers long ago. She lives in a wooden hut beside the ruins of the second tower, on the other side of the encampment."

"Remember, orcs aren't your normal folks just lookin' to settle down and keep their kids fed. They're bred on blood and spit and iron, and the only use they have for anything that isn't strong is to do the tasks that can't be beaten into completion." Gus gestures at the chained kobold for emphasis. "Orcs are monsters."

Then he glances, embarrassed, at Briar. "Erm. Present company excluded, I'm sure."

Francisca shakes her head. "They aren't, They've just got a different culture, I'm not saying that we have to respect it, if human culture had developed under the same circumstances, we would probably be pretty brutal too. They can change, they can be reasonable. It will just take time."

"This is why I prefer talking to fighting, If you just kill everyone you disagree with, nobody ever learns anything."

"I've been called worse," Briar growls at Gus. "Come on, Franny. Let's go talk to the shaman."

Francisca nods and walks along with Briar. "Don't mind what he says. I've spent all my life learning the power of words, and one of the primary things that i've learned is, Most people don't think about what they say before they say it. He knows orcs aren't monsters, he's just mad at them at the moment."

She puts her notebook away in her backpack and grabs a little bit of bread to eat. "Besides, it's not like humans are perfect either."

The shaman's hut is a stout, windowless log cabin. Two tiny skulls hang on the door - orc skulls, judging by the protrouding lower jaw and fangs.

A smell of fragrant incense greets you as you enter. A wrinkled, grey-haired orc woman sits in the darkness, smoking a pipe. She wears bear furs, and a white-and-black necklace of alternating animal claws and teeth around her neck.

"A human... and a half-human." She speaks the orc's language, with a faint, gasping voice. "Been a while since someone came wearing that necklace, too."

Francisca glances over, looking to see if briar feels comfortable with talking, or if she wants her to take over.
