Arcana 17: Orc shamans attribute many forms of magic to spirits, even if they aren't generally considered creatures. Those with corporeal form are usually summoned creatures of some kind.

Religion 11: The holy texts refer to many supernatural beings created by the gods.

Meanwhile, Pitamaha's mystery sense is tingling so hard it's curling his beard. If only his player had had the presence of mind to indicate a desire to see the shaman as well!

Gus polishes his boots. If he's going to be a "slave" here, he might as well get some menial labor done -- and if he's going to polish anyone's boots, they'll be his own.

"That jewel..." Briar says, pointing at the amethyst hanging from the shaman's neck. "Our friend wears one just like it. What does it mean?"

"Amethyst stands for secrets, dreams, and that which is unknown except to the gods."

(Pitamaha can show up if he likes.)

"A very poetic way to call it," said Pitamaha, entering the shaman's hut. His own symbol of Amethyst was pinning his turban in place. "I beg thy forgiveness for intruding so, esteemed one, but I wondered where my companions had gone, and here I find them. It is always a delight to encounter a fellow-seeker! Pray continue."

"Oh for the lova--" Briar nearly jumps out of her skin as Pitamaha enters. "Careful, grandfather! I thought you were an orc come to strike us all down for treachery or somethin'."

She turns back to the shaman. "You think Kalor can listen in on us with some kinda magic, wise one?"

Francisca jumps a little as well, when she realises who it is, she shifts across her seat, giving pitamaha somewhere to sit.

"That's not his field of expertise. Kalor uses death magic."

"Even so, he been obsessed with the ruins beneath the white tower for many weeks now, ignoring all else. He may not even know yet that you have visited his tribe today."

Francisca frowns. "Death magic? That sounds a bit scary."

"So have there been any attempts to topple kalor from his position? I mean, with him distracted for so long, I figure something would have been attempted already."

Briar briefly brings Pitamaha up to speed. "As it turns out, the old chieftain had a bunch of kids and I'm one of 'em. But they all died suspiciously and Kalor took over. He's the guy with all the death magic."

"I guess we could try an' get whatever he's lusting after before he does..." Briar muses. "But then he might just kill us all and take it when we're done."

Vivi presents Gus with her dirt encrusted and no doubt hole-riddled falling-apart boots that she has probably worn for at least a year straight, since she pulled them off that corpse she found in the woods once.

"Wooooow, I can't believe we never had a slave before. Cousin just vanishes into the woods and mopes if we hit him and give him orders."

"Jeepers cripes, girl! What have you been doing in these clod-hoppers? It'll take more than a lick of polish to get these looking good again. Looks like they're not even the right size for you, either."

Gus reaches into his components bag and pulls out a few reagents, crumbling them over the poor abused footwear and uttering a few words.

It takes several minutes, but when Gus hands the boots back, they're as good as new -- the leather is supple and reconditioned, holes and gaps in the stitching are restored, the soles are retreaded, the laces are the right length and no longer frayed, the polish shines, and the fit has been adjusted to the feet of a small girl rather than... well, whoever owned these before.

"There. See how those fit you now. You might give me your coat next."

(This ritual cost me reagents equalling 1/10 the gold piece value of a pair of boots, whatever that value turns out to be.)

"Are these thy people, then, child?" Pitamaha asked Briar. "If this Kalor truly defieth the gods of the Urk-Ril, then They shall surely bless a champion who possesseth the power to oppose him."

"Nobody has challenged him yet for the chieftain's throne," says the old woman. They are fearful of his power.

Francisca nods. "Well, I guess we need to figure out where he gets this power from, and try stop him from using it."

Vivi glares at Gus suspiciously for a moment before offering up her even more horribly tattered and mangled overcoat. Being clad in only some trousers and two filthy shirts leaves her feeling... vulnerable, somehow.

"Will you hurry up? This would be when a red cap would cut my head off!"

Having Prestidigitated the coat clean, Gus looks up from his darning. "What would a Redcap be doing in an orc village?"

Glaring at him full force, Vivi picks up Rudiger and holds him at chest level for a two-headed double glare. "Stalking me! Hurry up!"

"That's ri--" Gus stops a moment. "Really the only plausible explanation. Do you have trouble with Redcaps and the like often? Nasty buggers, the fae. Steal you away as soon as look at you, can't see what it is wrong with anything they do."

Gus needlepoints a patch of sturdy leather over the tattered remains of an elbow as he keeps the banter going.
