"Better the devil you know, I suppose." Gus fishes the half-burned dogend from behind his ear and salvages it into a fresh roll-up as they walk.

Briar makes a brief run, but it's clear Vivi's got the edge on land speed. She slows back down as she comes alongside Karzac.

"Tell me everything you know about Kalor," she says. "Everything that'll give us the edge against him. If we're gonna take his head, we have to know what we're up against, Karzac."

"Kalor is secretive. He is older than a brave orc should live to be. He is a powerful warlock, and it is said that he can kill a person, but nobody knows exactly how - some think he must know their name, others that he need only see them. I think there is some limit to his power, but I do not know what."

"He is often accompanied by a familiar spirit, a creature in the form of a man or orc, who covers himself in a dark cloak and rattles with chains when he walks. Nobody alive has ever heard it speak or seen it fight."

You reach the doors of the White Tower. A single orc guards it, but Kazrac pushes him aside with little resistance. Stairs inside spiral both up into the tower and down into the dungeons below.

The ground floor of the tower is completely empty, with a stone floor. Steps spiral both up and down. A flickering light glows upstairs. The sound of metal scraping can be faintly heard from downstairs.

Kazrac looks around. "After you. I'm a warrior, not an explorer."

Francisca looks up, then down. "I doubt kazrac is the kind to do his own mining work, in my opinion, downwards, we'll just find slaves, upstairs in the tower is where a warlock would be."

The stairs spiral up clockwise to the floor above. A single arched doorway opens into a chamber that fills the entire floor. The only stairs further upward are behind another archway at the opposite side of the room. Shards of black wood and rusted metal suggest that walls once divided the chamber.

At the other side of the room, tiny lights float around a pile of brass junk like fireflies, casting shadows that move dramatically across the walls. Obscure gearworks and pieces are strewn around the room.

Ampersand is all like 'nah son Imma go down'. Then he totally does. Go down. To where the mining sounds are coming from.

Ampersand: The stairs descend down into familiar darkness. Some distance underground, they end at a small chamber full of boulders and metal scrap, with a solid closed door in one wall.

Ampersand looks over the mess of a room, hoping what little light made it down from the main hall would catch his eye as a glint off something worth coming to this camp for in the first place.

The food, while plentiful, had only been that way as long as his evidently constant comrades. Pushing his ear to the edges of the large door he hopes to catch anything more clear than clanging of metal on rock while muttering to himself,

"I didn't spend time in a cage again because I heard this tower was full of slaves."

It would take at least an hour to search through all the rubble and scrap, but a quick search finds a heavy metal cog inlaid with ruby, worth 50gp.

At the door, you hear sounds of metal creaking in the distance and feet walking. Suddenly there's a clatter of mechanical whirring and a loud slam, as if a massive boulder just fell.

"Get back here, you idiot!" Briar hisses after Ampersand. She growls deep in her throat as he disappears down the stairs. "That does it. C'mon, we're going to follow him. If Kalor's down there, then that Ampersand's just gonna tip him off. If not, then we'll just hang a beating on him."

She heads downstairs after Ampersand.

Briar: You find Ampersand listening at the door.

Ampersand: You hear the patter of feet and voices that aren't human or even orc. They sound monotone and alien, and recite long strings of numbers to each other.

"Heh. Here I pegged you for the leader of this merry band," says Gus, stumping his roll-up on the stone walls, stashing the dogend behind his ear, and following down the stairs.

That leaves Francisca, Vivi, Pitamaha and Kazrac upstairs.

Francisca sighs and turns around, following Briar downwards, trying to be quiet.

Kazrac narrows his gaze at the pile of scrap illuminated by floating points of light, and readies his axe.

Vivi lounges her way down the stairs, picking at her teeth with a little ice-pick rib bone from some bit of feast meat.

Kazrac eyes the pile of scrap cautiously and follows the group downstairs.

Ampersand: You continue to hear the strange voices. Everyone downstairs  sees Ampersand listening at the door.

Ampersand just tries to ignore the gathering crowd at first. He had hoped to figure out what was going on without so much attention. Clearly that was no longer going to be the case.

Once Kazrac and the rest show up he finally stands up and faces the group. "Well now I'm certain. That sounds exactly like a door."

"Yeah? Seems like you think it's awfully important door, Ampersand," Briar says with a glare. She crosses her arms. "You gonna open it or not?"
