Ampersand shakes his head and moves over towards the corner of the room.

"I'm just a door listener, door opening's a whole different department. If I send out the request today we can maybe have someone here next week."

He wasn't about to be the head of a charge against anything orc related.

"If you're not gonna open it, then quit wasting time," Briar says. "Well c'mon, we got more stairs to climb than before." She starts heading up.

Francisca turns around, following Briar back up, "By Rothdar, can we make up our mind? This backpack is heavy and not exactly made for stair climbing."

She walks beside briar "So what's our plan for when we find him?"

The mysterious lights continue to orbit the pile of junk upstairs. Behind it, stairs lead further up.

Meanwhile, the door continues to exhibit an aura of menace over Ampersand.

(Passive play doesn't work when every player does it at the same time.)

Heading upstairs, Vivi gestures to Briar and Kazrac to get ready and fires an Eldritch Blast at the biggest pile of scrap/clockwork/lights with an Attack Roll of 22 and possible damage of 8 Arcane Blasty.

Scrap scatters everywhere and the lights disperse. Amid the mess, a large clockwork cube starts ticking. Brass levers fold out from the cube and it pushes itself up off the floor. Two more metal appendages extend from the sides and two circular lanterns on the front light up like huge eyes.

"Ouch," says the cube.

Vivi shuffles forward and sets her fists on her hips. Head up-turned, horns silhouetted against a presumed torch behind us, grin and speak toothily to show off teeth. "Heh heh heh..." Tilts her head from one side to the other to rustle her hair. "Sorry to get your attention like that, but I'm in a hurry."

Francisca walks up behind Vivi, adjusting her monocle. "Oh my, this is incredible!" She leans down, "Have you seen something like this before, Vivi?"

The clockwork cube blinks mechanically.

"Hooray! Another being has validated my individuality! I have been called many things: 'the cube', 'a pile of junk with lights orbiting around it', '#2464802'... but the most recent name I have been given is Cogs."

Its voice sounds mechanical, but lively.

"What the hell?" Briar gasps. She turns to Kazrac. "Did you know there was talking metal boxes in here?"

Vivi hurries forward and scoops Cogs up into a hug. "... Alright, but who calls you those things? Who else is here?"

"A strange man named That Is Of No Importance talked to me. I told him my name was Cogs, and so he called me Cogs. Logically, this re-affirms that the name Cogs is most correct."

"Next I asked his name. He said, 'That Is Of No Importance.'"

"The man was green skinned like your axe-carrying friends there, except older and wearing cloth. He asked about the machinery downstairs. I began by telling him of the time that I hopped from one leg to the other for 50.17565535 years."

"Halfway through the story, he told me to forget that I had met him. But if I did, I would forget that he had given me this order. This is quite a paradox. I decided to sleep on it, until you came in."

"Wait, hold on," Briar says, shaking her hand and approaching the creature. "Cogs, yeah? What can you tell us about this tower? What's upstairs?"

"Floor 1, empty. Floor 2, Cogs. Floor 3, deadly steam trap. Floor 4, containers of heavy metals and translucent solid compounds from underground. Floor 5, mysterious rune and statues. Floor 6, ancient planar tunnelling beacon. I have not been able to access floor 7."

Francisca jots stuff down in her notebook madly. "Oh my, this is incredible, I've never seen anything like this!" She wants to ask him a million different questions, but holds herself back from that for now.

"How long have you been here? What's the purpose of this tower?" She decides to ask.

"...and why did you hop from one leg to another for over 50 years?"

It seems a valid question.

"The purpose of the tower appears to be to hold the roof up."

"I came here under a previous employer, over a hundred years ago. I was built from parts of a previous co-worker who was crushed by some very heavy machinery. I spent many years following orders underground, turning cogs and wheels a very precise number of times."

"Then one day, a superior ordered me to go to the north wing. As I went, another superior - who was covered in chains unlike the others, but it didn't seem strange at the time - ordered me to go the south wing. I spent some time attempting to work out how someone could go both north and south at the same time."

"My clever solution was to hop back and forth until ordered to stop. Nobody noticed for 50.17565535 years."
