Briar nods at Franny, then gets to her feet. "So," she says uncertainly. "What now? Is the trap sprung for good?"

Basic arcana suggests that the rune is used up.

"It behooves us to proceed without hesitation," said Pitamaha, "if we are quite ready. Methinks we are expected, if we were not before."

It'll take ten minutes to rest and regain hit points. You can spend as many surges as you like and each regains a quarter HP +4.

Francisca coughs a few times, standing back up.

"Testing.. Oh my.. I'm glad that wasn't permanent!"

She puts her backpack back on. "Well, I guess we had better keep going, i'm surprised they haven't checked to see if we're still alive yet."

Kazrac stands.

"Now you have seen Kalor's power first-hand. If any of you aren't willing to risk your life for this mission, say it now. Nobody will think any less of you."

"No," Briar says firmly after a brief rest to regain her strength. "Now it's personal. Let's see what's behind the door."

Francisca grins. "He can't be that powerful if he didn't even manage to kill a novelist."

Pitamaha clears his throat and glances meaningfully at Ampersand.

Ampersand sighs and pushes himself up.

"Just because a door is locked doesn't always mean it can be unlocked." Either way, he still meanders over towards the giant slab of stone.

"Whatever, I'm one giant death wish right now, it's on you if the rest of the group is taken out with me."

The lock is simple and opens easily.

A crumbling stone walkway leads around the edge of a deep canyon, lined with stone walkways descending down into the darkness. A fall from this height would be fatal even to a hero. Stairways and bridges connect the different levels and sides, many crumbled and broken.

Faint clockwork sounds echo through tarnished brass pipes that cover the walls.

A stairwell leads to the levels below, where you hear mechanical, monotone voices read long strings of numbers to each other. On the other side of the cavern, linked by a crumbled bridge precariously repaired with melted brass scrap, there are doorways of lit rooms casting shadows of creatures moving back and forth.

"This Kalor fellow, known to have an interest in clockwork and so on? Not really what I expected from an orc chief's bolthole."

"Seems to me this is exactly the kinda secret someone like him'd want to keep for himself," Briar muses as she peers into the stygian depths. "I'll bet he's found some sort of magic weapon. Something to keep himself safe so he can dig for whatever 'truth' is down here."

She turns to Cogs. "How about it? Has he taken anything from here?"

Francisca looks around, her eye wide, she rapidly jots down sketches in a notebook. "Oh my.. this is amazing. How can this have been hidden for so long? We're going to have to let archaeologists into here once we take charge again, this needs to be documented."

Cogs follows along cautiously.

"He has a lot of things. A staff with a black skull on it, a gold ring around his head, and a weird brass amulet on a chain around his neck. I'm not sure if he found them here, though... They kicked me off this project a while ago after I tried to increase efficiency and broke some levers. I've kind of been out of the loop."

"Oh, he did say to let him know if you find any pages. If you find any pages, give them to Kalor. He likes pages. Has quite a few pages."

Gus seems actually interested in what's going on for the first time. "Pages? Pages of what?"

"No idea," says cogs, leaning dangerously over the edge.

Briar grabs Cogs and pulls him back on the walkway. "How much of this place d'ya remember? What kind of points of interest for a guy interested in power?"
