"The person in charge seems most interested in the big stomper at the other side of the ravine. But--"

With coincidental timing, a loud crash echoes through the canyon. You hear feet scurry back and forth in the distance.

"--but if you're looking for shiny magic stuff, there's a whole load of it downstairs under guard. Clothes, metal clothes, pointy sticks... They stopped letting me guard it because I kept trying it on."

Francisca adjusts her monocle. "Big stomper? What's a big stomper?"

"They never let me in to see it, but I read about it on one of the pieces of paper. Apparently the gods built it. It's connected to the cogworks. There are cogs and levers everywhere down here. The whole place is one giant cogs."

"Cogs as in cogs, or cogs as in you?" Francisca asks, looking down at him.

Cogs stares blankly into the distance for a moment.

"Whoah."

Cogs wanders ahead, mumbling to himself and walking ponderously like a giant. He stamps a foot on the ground as if crushing a bug.

"Squishhh! Out of my way, tiny people! I'm one giant Cogs!"

The walkway leads onward into the distance, and a closer stairwell leads down to the room Cogs described as full of items. A precariously repaired bridge crosses the cavern toward the "big stomper".

Briar suddenly gets an idea. "Hey, uh, Cogs, whaddaya say we go down to the storage room and see if anything's changed since you were there last? You know, take an inventory."

Francisca follows along, taking notes of how everything looks. "I've never seen or heard a place like this before."

Cogs walks sneakily off toward the stairwell and heads down.

Briar follows, keeping her eyes peeled for trouble.

(I won't be online for a few days, just FYI in case something big happens)

The stairs lead down past several floors of walkways. Cogs stops at the fifth floor and points toward a lit doorway.

Two spherical, mechanical creatures approach along the walkway. They spot you and hesitate.

"Organics detected," says one in a monotone voice, blinking his one central eye. "Report number and location to superior #0 as ordered."

They immediately turn around and begin to dash.

(Well, I'm inclined to kill them but I get the feeling we could trigger a serious angry hive mind effect here. What do the rest of you want to do?)

(Might be able to slow/stop one, maybe both. Need to get home and check my spells.)

Gus rifles a few pages in his tome, turning to a dogeared page of text. "Either we annoy the two of 'em or we wait and see what all their friends want. And I doubt they'd wanna invite us in for tea!"

Back. To recap, you've been spotted by two mechanical guards who are about to run off. You've got about an action each before they're away. You're on a ten foot ledge over a deep ravine, and next to a large doorway.
