"Doesn't make any sense to ignore one path. I take to the dark well enough if left alone. Seems more likely the guys we're looking for are down that'a'way anyhow." Gesturing towards the path to the east Ampersand double checks to make sure his crossbow is reloaded and secured along with his sword.

Francisca puts her book away, "Are there any signs of travel down one path? Footprints in the dust, anything like that?"

"Damn," Briar grunted. She hunkered down and ran her fingers across the stony floor, looking for clues.

"I could try, but I'm no tracker. There was a gnoll in my company who could track a rabbit on a rainy night. One time we bet him he couldn't bring back a bas'lisk egg and he never came back."

Dog chuckles. "Hahaha. That's hilarious." He looks around.
He rubs his chin thoughtfully as he bends down to look at the grooves on the floor. "Hmmm..." (Dungeoneering 8)
"Wait. Was that a joke?"

Francisca looks over at the others, then peers down at the floor where they're looking. "I'm not so good at this kind of stuff, the only place I can find my way around is a library."
[Rolled a 13 on dungeoneering]
As she searches about, "That reminds me about this guy from the town of kadarr, He always felt like nobody took him seriously, and one day he heard that there was a giant golden egg in a cave, guarded by all kinds of fiends! So he set off one morning..." She seems to zone out, leaning against the wall, telling her story.

Pitamaha examined both exits in silence. He tended to avoid digging around in strongholds and catacombs, but [with a roll of 13+4=17 on Dungeoneering] even he could tell that [what JD says we found, as this seems to be the highest roll]. He said, "It may behoove us to search side chambers first, so that we shall avoid being outflanked by reinforcements."

Vivi seems idly bored, her eyes alternating between drifting to sleep and popping back open, as though surprised to be here. She performs an extended double-armed yaaaaaaaaawn. "Just send me with Grandpa or Big Axe Sis... I'll... blast 'em. *yawn* Yeah... blast 'em."

Three sets of fresh footsteps are visible in the layer of scattered grave dirt, heading to the east corridor with the light at the end. From the width of the footprints they seem dwarven. There are other footsteps around the chamber, but they're hard to make out amid the mess of battle.

Ampersand gives a small clap as he walks past the group. "I'm so proud of you all for being able to look at the ground hard enough to realize the guys with the torch are down the path with the torch light. That aside, though, the old guy makes my point. No reason to leave one path completely unchecked." Stepping out of the main room he disappears completely just a few steps into the shadow, his voice alone echoing back. "I'll meet up with the rest of you."

The footprints fade as the east corridor continues into the distance. A lone candle burns atop a small stone anvil in a wall recess. To the north there is an opening to another chamber, lit by torchlight. The two dwarves from the tavern are here, knelt in silent prayer before engravings on the far wall, while another dwarf you don't recognise loudly recites dwarven holy text while wearing white robes, holding a hammer in one hand and .

He strikes a hollow anvil with a hammer, sending a ringing through the echoy chamber like a gong. The two dwarves stand up, walk to the next section of wall, and kneel before that while the dwarf recites other holy text from memory.

Despite your bright sunrod, none of the dwarves appear to have noticed you yet.

"...and then the hero Derke Taarsen turned to the third dragon, and said, 'Do you surrender, or shall I kill you as I killed your brothers?' The dragon said, 'Never!' The hero lifted his great hammer and smashed the dragon's head." *GONG*

The dwarves in the chamber seem to treat this story with great reverence.

You also notice that they aren't armed.

Grumbling in a vicious, accusatory whisper, Vivi entertains naive notions that they will not be heard if she can help it. "Bone Jockeys and Dead Johnnies are really good at listening and keeping secrets and tea ceremony, you know. They're probably more polite than Shadowskins!" Vivi sticks her tongue out in the general direction of Ampersand's departure.

Francisca whispers, "They're telling and listening to stories, they can't be all that bad.." She brushes some hair out of her face. "We can't go in there swinging, there's something fishy about this, let me talk to them first, once they're done, don't want to interrupt their ceremony."

Speaking of Ampersand's departure...

Stepping lightly and keeping his eyes as open as possible and hands against the walls, has he come about anything good or bad down that side hall?

Ampersand: The corridor heads on north into the darkness. You feel a doorway to the right. You can't see a thing, but there's a faint smell of earth and blood.

Everyone else: The robed dwarf strikes the anvil again, and the dwarves move on to the next wall engraving. Derke Taarsen at this point is marching through a blizzard. Anyone with Religion skill can roll it to recognise the story.

At this point, it's only a few minutes until the dwarves proceed around to the near wall and notice you.
