Gus is a bit overwhelmed and slightly baffled by recent events, but

"These things're are as alive as water mills,"

"Not ta nitpick, but that ain't true. They're alive, but they're from a place so far-off an' different from this that it's hard to imagine it's possible. Ya know how Good an' Evil an' Chaos an' Law are objective powers? These guys are made of Law like you an' me are made of water. They ain't got souls like you or me would think of 'em, but they're alive, right enough."

"Made of water? What kind of crazy talk is that?" Briar shouts. "Now c'mon, guys! We got one direction to go, and it ain't out. We're finishing this, one way or the other!" She heads towards the crashing sound, waving them to follow.

Vivi absently follows Briar, picking up and hugging Cogs as she goes.

"But I'm tired."

"It's... aw, never mind."

Gus follows. "Wonder if we oughta put some was or cotton or somethin' in our ears? Bein' too close to loud noise can damage yer hearing for the rest o' yer life, ya know."

"We'll stay here and try to hold the machines off for as long as possible. Good luck!"

The path continues to a doorway. It opens onto a thin ledge overlooking a massive chamber that echoes with the sound of rotating machinery. Monodrones run around below pulling levers and turning cogs. A ladder of brass rungs embedded in the wall is the only visible way down.

In the middle of the room, a great system of pulleys and chains lifts a massive cube of solid purple crystal. A ring of ornate brass thrones surround the cube apparatus. Sitting on one of them is an extremely old orc shaman.

"Careful," says Kazrac. "This could be a trap."

"I might could hit him from here, but that might not end well for us overall."

Gus looks down. It's a long, long way.

"If somebody falls, I could save 'em from goin' splat... but only once. So be careful."

Ampersand does what he wants without giving a fuck because he is the mayor of stealth city.

He checks stuff out and gets in a well hidden position. That is what mayors do.

"Of course it's a trap," Briar growls, her eyes boring into the shaman. "Wish I could work a bow as good as some of the Hobs in the Black Claws. I'd skewer him six times before he breathed his last."

Francisca suddenly realises that ampersand has stealthed away, and hurries to join the others.

Is that purple crystal, by chance, an amethyst? What would be the relevant check to identify something like that?

(Nature DC17 or Arcana DC22 to recognize if it's an amethyst. Actually, as a devout follower of that deity, you immediately recognize it as a solid block of amethyst gemstone. Such a large example is unheard of; the biggest known amethyst gem is only about the size of a human and is considered an important holy relic in its own right. This cube is ten feet on each side.)

All at once, the modrons stop. "Combination entered."

The shaman motions with his staff and a round modron shuffles underneath the crystal cube. He steps on a brass panel on the floor. It clicks.

Immediately the cube drops, crushing the drone flat. Cogs flinches.

The modrons immediately start turning the wheels and pulling levers, and the cube rises again. A drone carries away the pile of scrap that used to be a modron and dumps it in a pile of scrapped modrons.

"Keep going," says the shaman. "Unit 3, where is Sigilus? He should have delivered a fresh batch of monodrones already."

"Unit 3 was crushed by Godhammer 45 minutes 3 seconds ago," says a drone.

"Bah. Keep inputting combinations." He sits down, visibly weary.

"Careful," whispers Kazrac. "Kalor knows a spell that can kill anyone in one word. If he spots you before you climb down the ladder..."

Pitamaha's eyes went wide at the sight of the immense crystal, but he regained his composure once it fell.

45 minutes had apparently passed in what felt to him like just a few seconds. Philosophers have said that time was an illusion, and he understood this better than most, but this was something else. If one could go to sleep and pass over the whole night, or longer, why could one not remain awake for the journey?

Godhammer? That was an ominous name. Ever since he had been initiated into Amethyst's faith some years ago, he had been following a path, which now led to this stone. It could only be destiny, and when destiny is revealed, it is time to act decisively. But to do what? Could it be his fate to face judgment beneath this gavel, as the unfortunate metal things had?

"The one in the last room spake of a sacrifice," he whispered. "Holy Amethyst hath asked my devotion and promised me an answer, and methinks the time of that exchange draweth nigh. Prithee clear me a safe path, and let me do what I must."

"Careful," whispers Kazrac. "Kalor knows a spell that can kill anyone in one word. If he spots you before you climb down the ladder..."

"You hear that, Ampersand?" Briar adds. "Slit his throat if you can."

"The one in the last room spake of a sacrifice," he whispered. "Holy Amethyst hath asked my devotion and promised me an answer, and methinks the time of that exchange draweth nigh. Prithee clear me a safe path, and let me do what I must."

"What are you talking about, Grandfather?" she asks. "You got a plan?"

Francisca, standing behind Briar, shrugs. "I could kill people with my voice too, you don't see people talking about me in hushed tones."

She gets out her sketchpad to quickly draw the scene ahead of them "By Rothdar, that's possibly the biggest purple crystal i've ever seen. Whatever can it be for? Other than flattening things."

"That's what they're tryin' to find out, boss. Given what ol' wossname back there said it might have somethin' to do with Et's weapon." Gus looks around "Where'd he get off to, anyhow? Gone again?"

Somewhere!

Either at the best vantage point for stabbing the shaman, or investigating anything trap-like or treasure-like that his perception turned up (which I forgot to post anyway).

Then you're probably behind one of the thrones.

You spotted a death rune at the base of the ladder. Thievery or Arcana to disable.

Oh, and it's an odd time to bring it up, but you've gained enough XP to level up before this fight. Do you want to do it now, or leave it until after this encounter?

Ampersand has lived a not terrible life, he figures.
