(Oh. Well, in that case... my Bluff score is too low to make something like this work, but I'm going to try it anyway.)

Pitamaha shot a meaningful glance to Ampersand, then, in a flash, tore open the front door to the church, stomped crazily on the floor, making sure to get the monster's attention and a good look at it, then slammed it shut after a few seconds, breathing heavily. What is this crazy old man doing???

Francisca walks back to the others, looking like her nerves have gotten the better of her, "I think we should head back, I don't like the feel of this place.", She turns back to the enterance. "Then again, I don't really like the idea of walking around outside after hearing that sound."

"Well, we got two options: one we stay in the spooky hole, two we go back to town," Briar responds, fitting her armour back on. "I say we go. At east we won't be trapped outdoors. Besides, it's almost daylight." Briar tramps out in search of the path they followed.

Pitamaha and Ampersand: Father Kerin rushes into the room upon hearing the front door open and shut. He looks at you both, then eyes your belts where your weapons are sheathed, and relaxes his stance.

"It's out there, isn't it? We must be thankful that the creature cannot set foot on the ancient sanctified ground."

He pauses for a moment of thought.

"I took a vow to protect this secret, but the village is at stake. We must end this. Follow me to the basement."

He lights a candle and leads you down the trapdoor into the old stone basement below the church.

"This village was not always under the control of the great Church. We took control of Dramsburg fifty or so years ago. Before then, it was one of the last remaining Druidic settlements in the province. We built the church on top of this Druidic burial mound, using the smashed rocks of the standing stones that were once here."

"There is another such mound in the woods, a much more ancient site. The druids before us called it Furlacfall. Here, the border between our world and another is weak. Each year, the druids who came before us used a human sacrifice at Furlacfall to open a portal to the other world and pull through a portion of its life energy, doubling the output of the village's crops."

He holds his candle over the wounded corpse.

"This young man must have started the ritual, but without the proper precautions he was slain by the beast. Unless the ritual of human sacrifice is completed, more will come through the portal."

Vivi, Briar, and Pitamaha: It's shortly after dawn when you arrive back at the village. From a distance, you see the creature pacing around the church, a terrible, large hairless wolflike creature with a mottled green and yellow skin, a long spiked tail, fierce fangs and empty black eyes. It's covered in scars from previous battles. You are downwind from the creature and at a distance of around 500 yards, and it does not appear to have spotted you.

(To clarify, it's still before dawn for Pitamaha and Ampersand, giving them a few extra hours if there's anything they want to do before then.)

"What knowest thou about this ritual?" asked Pitamaha. [Religion: 1d20+8=10, ouch. We've got a few hours; can I take a 10, or a 20, or something? I am trying to figure out everything I can about it, including what happens to the poor bastard who gets sacrificed. Maybe I can finish it.]

Pitamaha: You're unfamiliar with the ritual. The priest brings out an old, leatherbound book.

"This book contains all the information I have on the old druidic ways of this village. Here I have recorded the etchings that mark the wall in this burial mound under the church. They depict the ritual."

"As best I can discern, the portal is opened when blood is spilled on the altar, and only closes again when a human is laid upon the altar and killed in a certain manner: his knee broken, then his body pierced, then his head cut off. No special words or incantations: primal druidic magic is rarely performed in such a civilized manner."

"I have kept this body preserved, in the hopes that whichever primal forces the sacrifice works by will accept it in the place of a live person. Unfortunately, I know very little about druidic magic, and less about the creature, save that it is exceptionally dangerous to face without great care."

Francisca opens her eye wide, frowning. "I really hope our friends are inside the church, and not inside that.. thing.."

[Can I use an arcana or nature roll to figure out what it is?]

She looks over at Briar and Vivi. "Have either of you ever seen anything like that?"

Vivi: On a 24, you additionally learn that the creature prefers to avoid bright daylight.

She looks over at Briar and Vivi. "Have either of you ever seen anything like that?"

Briar brandishes her axe. "No, but if you give me a minute, I can show you what its insides look like. My vote's for 'go chop it up.'"

Vivi pours a packet of spiced sugar into her palm and walks over to Briar, blowing it into her face. "Calm down, Big Sis!"

"Agh! Pbbbbth!" Briar drops her axe and rubs her eyes. "What the hell, kid? You crazy or somethin'? Wasn't the whole reason we came here to gut that thing?"

[17 for arcana, 15 for nature]

She looks down at Vivi, "I've never heard of a grundy-loo, where do they come from? Can I talk to it?"

Pitamaha asked the priest, "How was it that the ritual was interrupted? What fate befell this young man?"

Francisca: 17 on Arcana, you know that it's an extraplanar creature that can be protected against with certain magical wards, which unfortunately you don't have (although, as established, the chapel is protected with an ancient ward, and the creature cannot walk within a certain distance). 15 on nature, you know that it detects its prey with a powerful sense of smell.

Pitamaha: The priest replies, "The creature comes through the portal as part of the ritual. The druids who started this had some protective magic to ward the creature away from themselves. It seems the young man started the ritual carelessly or perhaps by accident, and the creature killed him."
