The soldiers chuckle. The paladin glares, and turns away unimpressed.

"Men, we march to Dramsburg and set up camp. Sergeant Rildy, dispose of that monster corpse and bring the headless body back to the village."

The soldiers march off, leaving a small group behind to attend to the Grundly-Loo's remains.

Francisca glares at Ampersand, then turns to the others. "Vivi, briar, you guys said there was something on the other side of that underground river? Might that be a good place to start investigating?"

Vivi glares at Fransisca. "There isn't any food over there."

Francisca looks over at Vivi, "You've got a good point, it's been a while since we've eaten. Maybe we should go get something to eat first, we might be able to get some information there, too."

When you get back to the village, a field nearby is full of grey tents and guards are stationed around the village. The church itself is guarded by two soldiers.

A group of villagers rush out to greet you with smiles and open arms. The old dwarf lady passes you a waterskin and a bag of apples.

"It's dead, isn't it? You've slain the beast? Gods be praised! Dramsburg owes you a debt of gratitude."

"You're forever welcome in my tavern. You'll never be short of a meal or a bed whenever you're in Dramsburg."

A small girl runs up and hugs Vivi. "When I grow up, I want to be a Master Wizard like you!"

"I'd be happier if they didn't have Father Kerin under arrest in the church there," says the innkeeper. "They're not telling us why."

Francisca thanks them for the food and offers. She hands out free preview copies of one of her latest books to the villagers, then stands up on a nearby rock to address them. "The beast is gone, and will plague you no longer! We apologise for any inconveniences the current presence of the army may cause, I promise everything will be back to normal soon, we just have a few loose ends and administrative work to work out, you know how that is."

She turns to the innkeeper. "Don't worry, the priest is just helping the soldiers with their inquiries, things should be back to normal very soon."

She reminds people to buy her books in their local bookstore, and then steps down off the rock and joins the others.

"Most gracious of you, miss Francisca!"

The innkeeper waits until you're out of earshot, then says, "does anyone here know how to read?"

A small girl runs up and hugs Vivi. "When I grow up, I want to be a Master Wizard like you!"

Vivi embraces the child in a tender moment, looking over her head to grin at the others in wild pride, then whispers to her. "Any little girl can be a Wizard! You just have to believe in it hard enough..." I'm gonna give her the last handful of my old candy and then tell her about my favorite places in the forest. One of them at random is fey-related. "But don't go alone, little sis! Bye!"

Heading back to hovering around Briar, Vivi instinctively catches Rudiger in her arms so that he can be given attention and purr in return. Meow.

Briar takes a long pull of the waterskin and hands it to Vivi. She turns to the others. "Yeah, so, there's this weird underwater chamber inside the hill we explored. It was like some kinda forest, you'd have to see for yourself."

She sits down on a stump and starts turning an apple over in her hands. "Y'know, it could just be the beastie banged my head harder than I thought, but... what if it's some kinda doorway to another place? Like where there's forest spirits, y'know, fairies and brownies and leprechauns? Vivi was pretty moony when I found her in it, and she's all about that stuff. Could be someone dug up the door and whoever was on the other side didn't like it, so they sent that monster to carve up anyone who got close. The people'd be scared off, right enough."

Francisca stands beside Briar, "So, should we check out that place first? I'm.. well...", she looks a little sheepish. "I'm.. not really good with water.. I might need some help."

I'm going to have to push you for a decision or advance the clock. Here's some more information to help you decide:

Your goal is to find out who or what is responsible for the appearance of the creature called the Grundly-Loo. If you fail to do this within three days, Father Kerin will be held responsible, and all of you will be imprisoned as co-conspirators.

You currently have the following leads:
- Someone must have informed the church about the sacrifice ritual. However, there is no line of communication from this village to the city where the church is based.
- Some of the village people might have information. The people you know in the village are: Paladin Tyrin, Father Kerin (under armed guard), the old dwarf woman, the innkeeper, Bron the hunter whose friend you recently sacrificed in the woods, and the sheriff. The village also has about 180 other inhabitants, mainly human, but you've spotted one tiefling man and a few halflings.
- You can investigate something that's not on the list.

You can split up and investigate different leads separately, if you wish. You can also roll an Insight check if you're really stuck.

Ampersand just sort of wanders off while the rest of the group decides what to do. Walking through the town he looks around the church and inn to see where exactly the paladin has himself set up while the investigation is ongoing. Commanding officers always did seem to love leaving journals full of pertinent information just laying around.

"Well, c'mon, Franny, we're going to check out that hill again," Briar says, getting up from her stump. "We're gonna do it real proper-like, this time, lookin' for clues and . You can take notes and stuff, right?"

She scratches Rudiger behind the ears. "Vivi, d'you wanna go?"

Francisca nods. "Sure, I'll just need to get a waterproof case for a notebook.. I'm sure I have one in my pack.", she goes looking through it. "Yeah, got it!", she puts her backpack back on, gives her monocle a quick clean, and gets ready to go with briar.

Briar and Francisca: At the ancient stone cairn, there's a small mound where the soldiers buried the body of the Grundly-Loo. The soldiers themselves are already back to the village.

Inside the cairn, the pool of water looks different. There's no vast forest reflected in it any more. It's just a normal shallow pool.

Pitamaha: The two guards stop you as you approach the church. "Sorry, nobody's allowed in to see the priest."
