Ampersand: The church is under guard and the inn is currently occupied by Bron the hunter, Taren the innkeeper and a few other villagers. The paladin seems to be based in a tent in the troop encampment just outside of town. It's very well guarded.

Ampersand is very well sneaky. Enough that he seemed to think he would stay hidden even with the giant flashing light apparently tied to his ass (Stealth 1 + 13 = 14) and get a good view of the guard's positioning and weaknesses in the patrols (Perception 13 + 6 = 19 ).

Amazingly, the guards don't notice you. They're not particularly alert and you spot several unguarded routes to the paladin's tent.

Moving around to a sparsely populated side of the encampment, Ampersand raises his hood and lowers his head, simply moving through the tents as anyone supposed to be there would, being careful to keep just on the edge of any guard's line-of-sight (stealth 16 + 13 = 29). Entering the tent, he simply moves over to the desk and swipes the journal sitting right out in the open. Taking a short glance around before leaving again, his awesome loot sense start to tingle (thievery 20 + 12 = 32).

You find a leatherbound book with notes in it, and some papers.

Out of the corner of your eye, you spy a locked chest which is easily opened. Inside you find:

1. A scroll of a ritual named Last Sight Vision, worth 100gp
2. A vial of alchemist's fire level 6, worth 75gp (Area burst 1 within 10; +9 vs Reflex, 2d6 fire damage on a hit, half damage on a miss.)

Ampersand holds the vial like a loved child he hasn't seen in an edition and a half. Realizing he was in the middle of a camp of people that don't like him and have swords, he pockets all the items and slips back out through the tents. Flipping through the paperwork for something noteworthy he heads back towards the forest. That head is gonna' be a pain to find.

It's all written in some kind of Primordial script. (Religion DC10 to recognise.)

Insight: 11+10 = 21, what's so special about the people already inside the church?

(Also: I speak Primordial.)

Francisca looks over at briar. "Do you think we broke it? Or does it only work at a certain time of day?"

Pitamaha: It stands to reason that Father Kerin is being detained in the church until his trial, and the guards are there mainly to keep him in.

(Oh, I'm sorry, I misread some earlier narration. Thought there were other people inside.)

"Thou art imprisoning Father Kerin inside?" said Pitamaha. "Thou incurrest a grave and needless risk, to hold a holy man on ground holy to his god, familiar to him and stocked by him with the materials of his office. He hath great wherewithal to plot escape or retaliation, and thou hast foolishly given it to him! It behooveth thee greatly to relocate him at once!"

"That's not really our call, sir. We're just following orders to guard the door. The Paladin's the one you want to talk to, but he's in the chapel right now talking to the priest."

"I dunno, could be both," Briar taps her chin. "Maybe the answer's deeper..." She goes a little deeper into the hill.

Stowing the book, Ampersand still goes back for the head.

Ampersand: It takes a while to recover the head, but you find it.

Briar: There's nothing further but an empty alcove and chambers you've explored already. 5gp in spare change is scattered in the pool.

Francisca kneels down at the water's edge. "I wonder if there's any kind of magic we could use to figure out who owned those coins.. They could have been thrown in by our culprit. Otherwise, I guess this is a dead end for the investigation right now."

Go to town, find something to conceal the head in, get some grub at the inn and wait for everyone else.

(unless the search for the head put 'em with-in spitting distance of the others. If he would have to look for them at all though, just back to town.)

This stuff is boring.

You guys are boring.

Vivi goes to the tavern and takes the barkeep up on his offer of Food Rewards, food that tastes better because it's free and given to Vivi for being Very Vivi. She will eat heartily and maybe talk to people who are naturally awed by her complete lack of table manners and the fact that she is convincing her cat to sit at the table and eat with her. She will ask them about the local goings on and maybe about the Priest in the church, such as he was before the Grundly-Loo started terrorizing them.

She will also entertain people with stories of Red Caps, because she's out of candy and thinking up a new spell graphics gimmick.

Several of the villagefolk spend the next hour chatting with you about the village and asking about your adventures.

One of the villagewomen says everyone was shocked that the priest was arrested. "We had no idea he was involved in dangerous rituals. I talked to nearly everyone in the town, and nobody knew he was involved in anything suspicious before the Knights marched in today. I'll say this about Father Kerin, if the charges are true, he can really keep a secret."

Taren the Innkeeper reveals that he never really liked the priest. "To be honest, I always thought he was too preachy. I'm not the only one in Dramsburg who feels that way. The church is always breathing down our necks."

Bron the hunter waits until everyone else has left, then quietly mentions something about the young man whose body you decapitated. "He always fancied himself a sorcerer, though he wasn't very good. The day he was killed by that creature, he came to me with a bunch of old scrolls, and said we had to go into the woods to 'try them out'. He's in the middle of chanting some ancient words when the creature showed up and attacked us. I survived... but he didn't. My memory is hazy after that."

"Damn!" Briar snarls. "Sorry, Fran. I thought this was a sure thing. We oughta get back to town and see how the others are doing."
