Bron thinks. "I saw the scrolls, but I have no idea what they said. They weren't written in the common tongue. Some weird language."

Ampersand pushes the books towards Francisca between eating and attempting to feed the head. "Go for it, just a bunch of lines to me."

"Where are they now?" Briar asks.

Francisca puts her monocle on and starts reading the books, taking bites of a loaf of bread.

Briar: Bron thinks for a while, then says, "They should still be in his pocket, unless the priest took them. In either case they're still in the church. Which now that I think about it is under guard now. Hum."

Francisca: The text is written in fire script, a sort of writing used by the Knights of Catharsus.

The journal records every mission that Paladin Tyrin has been sent on in the past two years. There are a several of missions marked "secret" and a reference to the stolen sword from your first adventure.

"It is necessary to minimize contact between our soldiers and the heretical beliefs of Urkas Berg. I have hired a group of adventurers instead, using the excuse that our men are stretched thin guarding the festival. The adventurers are an awful bunch and I expect only half will survive, but it is no loss as long as the sword is recovered."

The sheets of paper appear to be his latest orders.

"Paladin Tyrin. You are ordered to travel to Dramsburg in Grenrich, and arrest Father Kerin for the following crimes:

Aiding and abetting human sacrifice
Failure to protect doctrine

Punishment: Execution

He is to be tried at your discretion and replaced with another priest as soon as possible.

EVIDENCE: We received a letter by carrier pigeon from our usual source inside Dramsburg. He claims Father Kerin has sent five adventurers into the woods to sacrifice a local boy.

You have permission to execute the adventurers if they attempt to flee."

Francisca glares at Ampersand. "Where did you get these? are you trying to get us in trouble?"

She looks over the documents some more. "If we wanna find the source that blabbed, we could look for anyone with carrier pigeons. Maybe that's a place to start?

Thinking for a moment, she adds. "It's weird that they showed up almost as soon as we had beaten the monster, though. I mean, don't armies like this usually take days to mobilise? They must have been travelling for a while before we even figured out what to do about this.. Man, this is fishy."

Pitamaha stroked his beard and said, "We are - what is the word - pawns? - in a vast game. Though they appear to regard us but little, which giveth us one advantage. Let us act with discretion, that they shall not too soon discover our suspicion. It would behoove us to return these documents ere they are found missing, but such secrets are more valuable in our possession than out. Can copies be made quickly?"

(Is there a ritual for making copies of letters or should I just start doing the monastic thing and get my scribe on? Also: visit the carrier pigeon guy on the pretense of wanting to send a letter somewhere. Get a feel for whether he's working on his own or the contact just hired him. Investigate as appropriate. I've got pretty good Insight but nothing else that'd be useful.)

[Francisca's got like a dozen novels under her belt, Bongo, if anyone's gonna copy this, it's her.]

Francisca grabs some nearly transparent paper out of her notebook, puts it over the sheet, and starts quickly copying the text below onto the paper. "This stuff is amazing, I use it for copying details of pictures on walls, so I can describe them in my book better when I write the final copy."

She finishes tracing the page, "I figure if I copy it exactly like this, instead of just transcribing it, it'll be more useful if we need it as evidence sometime." She folds the sheet in half, and places it inside one of her books, using the secret page ritual to disguise it. "Now, mister thief, can you put this back where you found it? Good work, by the way."

She lowers her monocle and looks at him. "Don't get caught, though. And if you do, yell so we can run."

Strangely, you can't find anyone in town who keeps carrier pigeons.

Briar: Bron thinks for a while, then says, "They should still be in his pocket, unless the priest took them. In either case they're still in the church. Which now that I think about it is under guard now. Hum."

"Damn," Briar grunts. "The one time our drow's sticky fingers 'd come in handy and he doesn't use 'em. Thanks for your help, pal." She pats Bron on the arm and steps away, dragging Vivi along with her back to the party's table.

"Ok, it looks like the guy we chopped up on the altar, Bron's friend," she explains in a low voice. "Well, he had himself some magic scrolls he tried to read before the monster got him. Those scrolls're either still on his carcass or with the priest. And both're inside the church, under guard. They could be a key to figuring this mess out, so how do we get 'em?"

Francisca looks over at Briar. "I could walk up to the guards and tell them that Tyrin said that we're supposed to retrieve the scrolls?"

If they're not communicating by carrier pigeon, then it must either be by courier or by magic.

Ampersand shoves the scroll no one seems to care about into the mouth of the decapitated (and kind of smelly) head no one seems to care about and pushed it to the side, leaving a blood streak over the table as he scooped up the documents. "Birds make noise. I'll get these back tonight and keep my ears open. In the mean time come get me if there are any other leads." Storing the documents somewhat clumsily in his cloak, he leaves the inn.

He commences wandering the town. Possibly napping.

Anyone trained in Arcana immediately recognises the skull in the head's mouth as Last Sight Vision.

You can see the last two rounds a body or skull saw before it was killed, from their perspective. For every 10 points by which your Arcana or Religion check exceeds 10, you can see another 2 rounds.

Other characters can aid your skill check by making a check with a DC of 10 plus half the ritual caster's level. Success adds +2 to the ritual caster's result, and failure penalizes by -1.

Casting this ritual costs 25gp. Francisca being a bard can cast one ritual per day for free.

Francisca shakes her head. "That guy is strange, but he might have saved us.", She asks briar to help her out by picking up the head, covering it up with something so nobody notices, and taking it to somewhere where we can work in peace, "Anyone else with arcane training, help me out."

[I Rolled for Last Sight Vision, Got 19, If anyone with arcana skillpoints wants to try help, we could get this up to 4 rounds]

Briar sighs, borrows a potato sack from the innkeeper, stuffs the head inside, then follows Franny to a quiet spot. Possibly the privy.

Ampersand has an existential crisis.

Then finds a tree or roof out of the way with a good overview of the town to rest in and lazily watch the town for anything obvious until night or otherwise disturbed. (not going to roll for anything, but natural +9 to noticing things like people shadily moving around the backsides of towns or generally being bad at not looking suspicious)

Vivi can't believe what she is seeing here. She shoves Franny aside and shows her how an expert talks to a disembodied head.
