Francisca walks up to the bartender, smiling at him, "Excuse me, good sir, But I was wondering if I could ask you some questions about the recent events that happened in this fair town, Could we talk over there?" She points towards an end of the bar that is a bit less full of people.

Francisca: The bartender glances at the door and back. "Sure. What's this about?"

Briar: You don't see anyone suspicious.

Francisca smiles her sweetest smile, "Don't worry, we're not trying to get anyone in trouble, we don't want the soldiers in on any of our information, you know how soldiers can be. Anyway..", she leans forwards. "We've found out that poor late Letham may have come into possession of some scrolls that previously belonged to you. We were just wondering what you were doing with those, seeing as apparently they were the ones used to summon that monster."

The innkeeper's eyes open wide.

"Do you suppose someone left them here? A couple of adventurers came through a few weeks before you."

(Bluff 14 vs Francisca's passive Insight 16).

You sense that he's lying.

Stealth 18 + 13 = 31

Staring at the back of the guard's head for what felt like hours, Ampersand finally overcomes the will to push him off and instead steps back towards the opposite side of the building.

Acrobatics 1 + 10 = 11

Falling completely off the side, he slams into the ground hard... but quietly.

(guess I should find out if both his legs are broken before moving on)

Francisca continues to smile at the bartender. "You get one lie, that was it, tell me the truth now, or this lead won't go anywhere. And i'll have to ask the soldiers to assist in my investigations.", She leans back and shrugs. "Things will just become a lot more difficult for everyone, do you want that?"

(sticking with that stealth roll since it ended up not getting used)

In that case he grumbles while getting off the ground. Pulling one of his bolts out while complaining to himself about the annoyance of being stuck in such a town and being done with the whole mess among other things he tosses it through the window he had been trying to to grab the ledge of. The glass shatters and sounds of hustling bits of armor, feet on a rooftop, and a very shocked priest are heard immediately after as Ampersand rounds the corner to the front of the church. He casually follows the guards in and turns the corner to find a good nook out of view from the window that would surely be investigated and guards' sight when they turn to leave again.

Francisca: The innkeeper frowns. "Alright, alright, you caught me. The scrolls are mine. I bought them years ago to try and learn magic, but I never had the aptitude. It's illegal in this province, but the old magic is no more dangerous than any other weapon. The church here would have me arrested if the secret got out."

The brown dog walks up. He pets it three times, and it wanders off outside.

"Too many people in this village are loyal to that oppressive church. You know the stories of Rothdar, how he fought for the freedom of all men. Do you think he'd tell a man what scrolls he can or can't own in his home?"

Ampersand: It works exactly as planned. The guards rush in and grab the priest. There's a lot of shouting, and a guard notices that the window has smashed inward and there's a crossbow bolt on the floor. The guards order to priest to stay put while they rush out, one guarding the door and the other running back to camp for reinforcements.

[Rolling insight to see if he's lying, got a 9]

Francisca leans back, crossing her arms. "I agree, they acted of their own volition, Letham chose to cast that spell, I guess we just have to find out why." She gets up again. "I apologise for taking so much of your time, sir, thankyou for your assistance.", she turns to walk away, but stops and turns back, leaning in to whisper. "Next time, keep your stuff locked away better, alright?"

She walks over to briar, "We had better go talk to Bron, Find out why this happened."

You don't sense any deception from Taren the innkeeper.

Bron's at the other side of the tavern.

Francisca walks over to him and sits down. "Good [Is it morning or afternoon? I have no idea], Bron, Do you remember me from yesterday? I'm sorry, but I have to ask you some more questions."

Bron downs another ale. It's evening by now and the sun is setting.

"Sure, ask whatever," he says, slurring his words slightly.

You hear guards rushing around near outside the church.

Briar plonks next to her, watching the room and listening for anything out of the ordinary.

Francisca gives a sidewards glance over towards the church, but continues talking to Bron. "We saw that Letham summoned the monster, and that he stope the scrolls from the bartender. What We need to know is why he did it. Why did letham steal those scrolls and use them at that specific place?"

Ampersand rises from his hidden position and walks down the center of the church, grabbing the priest by his arm and pulling him into the office they had met in. "There isn't much time, so I'll be talking first. You will then be answering my questions and giving any other information you may feel relevant. In that order."

Looking around the room for exits and entrances he paces as he speaks, "first off carrier pigeons. They come from this town regularly, so someone must at least notice them if not know their keeper. Second are flagrant opposition to the church. Us adventurers are just scapegoats. There are a dozen easier targets to lay blame on than a priest, so that much at least, was the intention."

Francisca: Bron's head sinks briefly. "Ever since we were kids, he always wanted to learn magic. He learned some ancient languages and knew a few magic tricks, but it wasn't enough. So one day he comes to me and says he's got a new spell he wants to try that only works at the old standing stones in the woods, and so I go with him just so he doesn't get lost or eaten by wolves."

"Letham was a good person. He can't have known how dangerous the creature would be. All the things he conjured up until that point were minor - cats, pigeons, that sort of thing. He didn't mean for this to happen."

Ampersand: Father Kerin nods, quite startled.

"I've seen carrier pigeons fly from the tavern at night. The inkeeper tells me his wife trains them. And yes, I am aware that not everyone in this village appreciates the authority of the Church. Not everyone holds themselves to the same standards as the most faithful. But I'm rather surprised that anyone would want to get rid of me this badly."
