Francisca looks at Bron, then looks over at briar, she stands up. "Thanks, bron, sorry that things happened the way they did."

She walks over to briar. "It's all just a simple thing gone wrong, it seems, now we just need to figure out a way to explain it to the paladin without anyone going to jail, the guilty party is already dead."

"Well, you're not anymore. When the guards return you'll tell them there have been multiple strange happenings like this since the appearance of the beast; which you now realize have been attempts on your life." Lifting the crossbow, he points it towards the priest. "And before you try to explain how poor a liar you are, I'll go ahead and offer to make those attempts a reality, if it's any easier."

(any windows in the room? Also since he's been from the church to the camp a few times now, could he approximate how much longer there is before reinforcements would be back? Lastly, any sense of where the roof guard is currently standing above them?)

Ampersand: There are two windows, one of which you broke. The guard is standing at the edge of the roof above the main room, where there is a castle-style battlement.

The priest has actually been in the the church the whole time, but the camp is only about five minutes' walk from the village, and they'll be already on their way.

(*Ampersand had been back and forth. Didn't realize the window I broke was in the office though, which is more of what I meant since I figured the guard would be watching the front.)

(Rolling intimidate to drive home the importance to & that the priest say he had been attacked before. Unfortunately he's just too damn pretty for his own good 6 + 6 = 12)

(Stealth 10 + 13 = 23)

Assuming his lack of a response was one of the affirmative, Ampersand heads towards the less glass-shardy crime-sceney window and slowly opens it, careful to not let a ripple catch the attention of the guard on the roof. Whispering back at the priest before he slips out, slinking into the forest "be sure to close this too, I don't want to underestimate the paladin's perception."

The priest obediently closes the window behind you. You escape just in time to see the paladin send four guards to the church and eight more to search the village and the woods for the source of the crossbow bolt.

Ampersand heads back to the inn. Not asking anyone how the ritual or their end of the investigation went, he instead simply gathers up Romando and heads back out to the woods. There in he finds a good tree near the town and high enough not many would ever see the top that he can hide both the head and the journal in.

After that he would spend some time hunting. Anything rabbit or larger would do just fine, but he's not exactly an expert and would give up to make it back to the inn before the more crowded hours passed.

"What we need is those scrolls," Briar nods. "We can tell 'em what we heard and show the proof."

"That's a good point, I'm not sure who would have them, though." She walks over to bron. "By the way, what happened to the scrolls afterwards?"

Bron scratches his head. "I stuffed the papers into his coat. I think."

Just then, the door bursts open and a squad of guards rush into the tavern. The squad's leader sends his men to search the rooms, much to the innkeeper's annoyance.

"We just heard that someone tried to kill Father Kerin with a crossbow. You there, the bard and the half-orc. Where's that drow companion of yours? Doesn't he carry a crossbow?"

Ampersand, meanwhile, you easily catch a rabbit. You notice some guards searching the woods, but they don't spot you on your way back to the village.

Francisca looks at the guard in shock. "I don't know where he is right now. But what possible reason would we have to kill the father? We're trying to stop you soldiers from executing him. Why risk our own lives when we can just wait a day and let you do it for us?"

He quickly replies, "You could be trying to keep a secret hidden by killing him before the trial. Or, you think he'll be found innocent and you're trying to kill him ahead of schedule to make sure. Either way, someone really has a grudge against Father Kerin."

He scrutinizes you, and his men come back down the stairs.

"Nothing here, sarge."

"Very well," says the squad leader. "I'll keep my eye on you two."

They leave and march off to search elsewhere.

Briar whispers into Franny's ear: "Now what? They're never gonna let us into the church!"

Francisca takes her monocle out and polishes it irritatedly. "This is really frustrating, having to deal with all these soldiers. I still don't get why they left such a large group here. If they brought so many soldiers to take out the monster, why are they still here? They only need a few to do the trial."

She puts the monocle back in. Looking at briar. "Was bron's coat still on his body?"

Ampersand actually leaves the rabbit in the tree along with the journal, head and alchemist's fire before returning to the town.

On his return to town he heads straight back to the inn, making a grand entrance. "Good news! The investigation is all but over!" Approaching the bar he turns and calls out to the entire crowd, "the beast that threatened you all was nothing compared to a greater scheme being set in motion that may have destroyed the town. Fortunately for you The Great Detective & The Rogue was here. By morning I'll have tracked down the true culprits, so for tonight, we all drink!" He spills five gold on the bar and grabs the nearest mug so he has something to raise.

"Incidentally," says the innkeeper leaning toward you, "the guards are looking for you. If you wanted to kill the priest, you should just have waited until the trial. The Knights of Catharsus are efficient killers."

Ampersand grins and gives a hearty laugh to the innkeeper. "Just another false charge on a record to be expunged tomorrow, it doesn't worry me a bit."

He leans in a bit more himself and though still proud, is more hushed as he speaks. "I've reason to believe that someone in this town has some pretty nasty plans. Fortunately I'll be meeting with someone in the morning to learn their identity. But that's a worry for the morning, it's now night, so we drink!" With that he tosses another two gold on the counter to spur the keeper to distribute drinks.

"Drinks all round!"

The innkeeper distributes tankards of ale around.

Anyone who's in the tavern can roll Perception.
