Bthur grunts. "Do what you like with that junk. We'll have nothing to do with that demon."

In the pile you find:

1. Urkas' armour, which identifies itself immediately when picked up, unlike Briar's old dwarven axe. It is a +1 Armor of Dark Majesty, with the following properties:
* +1 to AC
* +1 item bonus to Bluff and Intimidate checks
* +2 item bonus to all defences against enemies under your Warlock's Curse
* Daily power: As a minor action, place a curse on any enemy you can see, rather than only the nearest enemy

2. Bthur's black cloak, which identifies itself: it is the Gloaming Shroud, with the following properties:
* +1 to Fort, Reflex and Will
* +1 to Stealth checks in dim light or darkness
* As a daily power, as a minor action, create a zone of dim light (close burst 10), until the end of the encounter. Rules note: The effect of dim light is that creatures within it have concealment from anyone who lacks low-light vision. Concealment imposes a -2 penalty to attack, and allows you to make Stealth checks to hide at the end of a movement. You take -5 to the Stealth check if you moved 2 squares or more. Anyone whose passive Perception you beat, you're invisible to them: you have total concealment, they have -5 to melee/ranged attack you even if they manage to guess where you are, you have combat advantage for +2 to attack, and they can't make opportunity attacks against you.

3. A dagger of dwarven make

Inside the wooden chest you find:

1. 510 gold pieces

2. A very ancient, damaged black steel sword

"Let me see that sword," said Pitamaha.

Dog backs away from the loot and shoots it a wary eye. "When you sprout horns and your soul's ripped to pieces, don't forget I warned ya."

"Noted." Vivi discards the robe and begins dismantling refitting Urkas' armor... basically stretching the Dwarf-sized crap out and awkwardly threading plates and bits into her usual tattered coat. She is now Armored Vivi. ARMOR CLAIMED.

"Gold's always good," Briar scoops up the gold pieces. "How should we divvy this up?"

Francisca frowns and walks over to Bthur, "Are you sure this is the right thing to do? Demons have a corrupting influence, Urkas might not have even known what was happening the entire time."

She looks down at Urkas, "He probably honestly believed he was doing the right thing the entire time, And even though you all had your doubts, you still assisted him in stealing the sword, And you probably would have fought us to defend him if I didn't convince you otherwise, So is it fair to cast him out without at least a trial?"

She turns back towards Bthur, "He was your friend, you at least owe him the courtesy of a fair trial to ascertain his guilt."

The black sword looks eerily identical to the ones wielded by the skeletal riders in the illusion of the battlefield. It's too old and rusted to be of any use as a functional weapon, and has no discernable enchantment.

Bthur turns to Francisca. "He'll get as fair a trial as can be expected from the Church of Catharsus. Considering that he betrayed the church and stole a holy artifact, he'll be lucky if he manages to avoid execution."

"A great many sins can be excused of one in the thrall of an evil illusion," mused Pitamaha, examining the rusted old sword in one hand and stroking his beard with the other, "but in his station to have been taken in by such an illusion may itself be regarded as a sin of terrible gravity. He who among the many gods goeth must needs with vigilance serve." He hung the ancient blade from his pack and faced the adventurers. "It is my wish to commend you," he said. "It hath been some time since I saw such a battle fought with such valor and rapport. I knew Fate had gathered us, but now I believe it was for a larger purpose than this one worthy mission. Therefore I propose we remain companions, until this purpose is revealed and attained."

Ampersand pushes past Pitabread and grabs for the cloak, flipping and wrapping it around to turn it into a bag of sorts, dropping the dagger in, then sweeping his arm over the pile of gold in Briar's arms, pushing the top layer of coins in. "Whatever, I'll see you guys back at the church... or go get drunk. Fate shall decide." Tying the whole pack up he tosses it over his shoulder and moves through the dwarves back out to the entrance.

Francisca agrees with Pitamaha, "I could do with stories with more recurring characters, People like those."

She yawns and stretches. "Speaking of which, I think I need to find a comfortable place to sit for the next couple of hours, I have some serious writing to do."

She thanks the dwarves again for their help, and offers to take Urkas to the paladins of the church, along with the sword.

Looking sidewards at ampersand's retreating form, she remarks. "What is it with guys like that? Why are they always in such a rush?"

"Then this is where we part. We shall have to leave soon to another city, to look for our next king."

Bthur bows to you. "Fare thee well."

You arrive at the cathedral of Catharsus in the early hours of the morning. Guards are still posted around the cathedral grounds and the paladin Tyrin is waiting for you.

"By the Avenger, you did it. You have Urkas, I see. And the sword?"

"Guards! Take that dwarf into custody. He is charged with theft of a holy relic of our order."

Two soldiers march up and carry Urkas away.

"The six of you have done the Church a great service. Here, your reward as promised."

You each gain 80gp.

(Don't forget to record the treasure you get, including the gold from the chest earlier, and any items you took. Assuming you divide the 510 gold from the chest evenly, that's another 85gp each.)

(510 / 6 = 85. So.. 85 + 80 GP + Armor for me.)

Vivi comedy-pummels Grandpa and Fransisca on the back, then sticks her tongue out at Dog and Ampersand and then gives Briar doe-eyes because she's too big to even fake-hit. "Let's go to a nice restaurant!"

Francisca takes a little bit of time to explain to the paladin what happened, about the demon influencing urkas and all that, and tells them how they can contact her if they require a witness for the trial, and thanks them for the gold.

She turns to Vivi, "That sounds like a plan, i'm so hungry, I could eat an entire deer, maybe we could get you another bit of headgear, little miss minty vivi."

She pulls her notebook out of her pocket and flips through it. "I've got a lot to get down on paper tonight, And I can't remember the last time I ate. Let's find the place with the comfiest chairs."

(what about those gems from earlier, what was their market worth?)

And so you while away the rest of the night eating and drinking. The new paladin is awarded his sword, and the rest of the harvest festival passes uneventfully. A special note is made in the church's official journals that even before the holy sword was given to a paladin, it already slew a demon.

And with that successful mission, you level up!

(It's been about half than the usual number of encounters for a level, but as it's a forum game, I'm using a quicker encounter rate.)

Buge: The cut opals from earlier totalled 33gp per person.

Note your treasure! If you forget it, it's gone.

[posted levelup in the other thread]

Briar's night is spent carousing with the others, signing songs, arm-wrestling the locals, and clumsily hitting on Dog.

During the festival, she takes part in the woodchopping contest.
