Pitamaha is apparently distracted, as he fumbles his Religion check (1d20+8 = 10).

Four rounds it is.

Vivi, Pitamaha and Francisca, you're suddenly at the burial mound in the woods with Bron. He looks clean-shaven and confident.

"Letham, where did you get those papers?"

You unvoluntarily look down at some sheets of parchment in your hands. You realize that you're looking through the eyes of the villager who was killed.

"From Taren the bartender," you say. "Can you believe that he just left magical scrolls lying around?"

"Letham, that's theft!"

"Quiet, you're interrupting my ritual."

You look down at the papers. They're written in the secretive Druidic language.

"Letham," says Bron, "give me those."

Bron reaches out to grab the papers, but there's a brief struggle and suddenly you cut your hand on his dagger. The blood drips onto the altar, and a great wind suddenly blows, knocking you to your back.

"Letham! Run!"

There's an ear-piercing roar and a creature slowly phases into view - it's the Grundly-Loo. It bounds toward you and tears open your abdomen with one bite. The last thing you see before you die is Bron lunging at the creature with an iron knife.

Briar looks to the three once they'd emerged from the trance. "What is it? What did you see?"

Francisca puts her monocle back in and rubs her eyepatch. "Looks like we need to talk to the bartender. The victim seems to be the one who summoned the monster. He said he stole the scrolls to do it from the bartender. We need to talk to him to find out why he had the scrolls, and talk to bron, to find out why Letham would have done it."

Also, Ampersand: There's a conspicuous lack of people acting suspiciously. There's a dog, but that's about it. Still no carrier pigeons in sight.

shifty eyed dog

(Is there just no one around at all? Or Everyone seems freakishly chipper for a town that had been plagued by a beast for weeks and is now basically occupied by soldiers with their priest is captivity?)

A tiefling man walks around the village. Two guards stop and talk to him for a while, then he goes into the tavern. Some women leave their house and go into another. The dog wanders off into the woods.

Follow that dog. Ampersand has a bad feeling about it / doesn't feel like doing real work again yet.

The small brown dog walks all the way to the burial mound in the woods by the most direct route, explores it for a while, sniffs at the ground where the Grundly-Loo was buried, then heads back to the village. It briefly explores the encampment before a grumpy soldier shoos it off.

"Well, c'mon," Briar says, dusting herself off. "Time's a-wasting." She walks back to the bar (with the others, presumably).

Francisca follows Briar, jotting down notes in her notepad as she walks. "We need to be careful we don't let the soldiers know about any leads before we investigate them fully, those types are slightly prone to arresting people first and asking questions second, I think a more subtle approach would be appreciated by the townspeople. In short, if there's any soldiers at the bar, can you distract them while I ask questions of the barkeeper and bron?"

Presumably a decent amount of time has passed. Ampersand sets back out to track the paladin.

(Streetwise is 4 + 9 = 13 and Perception 19 + 6 = 25 to find) and (Stealth is 13 + 13 = 26 and Acrobatics 9 + 10 = 19 to follow)

Being an outsider in a small town, few spoke much in his presence even considering how empty the streets were compared to the bustling cities he was used to roaming. Still, being a small town he could also just get up really high and see where everyone was. Keeping that height advantage he would stick to tree tops and roofs where able.

"Just talk to them, ask them questions, something like that, It'll only be necessary if we can't talk to the people without being overheard."

Ampersand: Nobody spots you as you move from rooftop to rooftop in the small town. From the rooftop of the church you hear the paladin, still talking to the priest in the church. There's a guard on the roof, but he hasn't spotted you.

Francisca, Briar: When you reach the tavern there happen to be no guards around, just a lot of villagefolk. It's late afternoon by now and a few people have gathered for a meal.

Avoid the guard (reroll?) and try to get near a window. Listening in on the conversation as best he can, Ampersand will continue to follow the paladin for the rest of the night, until either something dramatically unexpected or he returns to the camp and ends his investigation for the day.

Primarily he's concerned about staying out of sight. Staying close and with-in audible and / or visual range of everything the paladin does is his goal, but not if it risks being caught.

The paladin spends the next hour grilling the priest, who by now sounds quite weary. They go over all the recent events, most of which you already know, and the priest tells the truth as you know it.

"But how did the boy know about the druidic burial mound?" asks Paladin Tyrin.
"...I don't know," replies the priest.
"Really? You admit you knew about the mound and the ritual, and that the boy knew, but somehow he learned all this from someone else?"
"He must have."
"I don't believe it! Tomorrow is the last day before your trial. You'd better get your story straight by then."

The paladin leaves the church and heads back to the camp. There are still two guards by the door and one on the roof.
