ADVENTURE 3, PART 2

Things soon return to normal in Dramsburg. The bearded druid takes over the tavern, and the secrets of the village are safe. Seric the tiefling comes to the group of you one morning with a rolled up piece of paper.

"Considering all you've done for us, I'd like you to have this. It's a treasure map to an old underground ruin, about a day's travel south of here. Rumour has it that it's full of valuable pre-Kingdom artifacts and coinage.

"I've never been there myself because the trail goes through territory occupied by dangerous orc tribes, but I think you guys can handle it. The map's yours if you want it."

(Orc tribes, archaeological artifacts, and loot? Why, he might as well have handed us a map to the Cave of Character Motivations!)

Francisca looks over at Seric and smiles. "I hope this isn't a way to get rid of the only loose end left in this mess, It is tempting, though, I need material for a new book."

Briar looks up from a plate of rabbit pie and apples. "What? Let me see that!"

She dashes over to Seric, takes the map from him and unrolls it on the table. "What orc tribes where?" she demands, looking over the map and trying to decipher the markings.

"When this map was written, the entire hold to the far south was controlled by the Urk-Ril tribe. The name means 'head-hunters'. However, this map is several years old and word is that other tribes have muscled in on their territory after the Urk-Ril's leader died of disease or old age."

Vivi pokes over the edge of the table, having resorted to lounging about as a cat when around the others because WE'RE STILL IN THIS ONE TAVERN TOWN??? When she's not around them, so for about 12+ hours a day, she's wandering around the nearby woods to explore and catalog... eat... catalog the local mushrooms.

"Aren't Orcs kind of... superstitious?"

Pitamaha's encounter with that one orc chieftain, some years ago, evidently paid off, as (with a natural 20 on his Religion check, for a total of 28) he became intimately familiar with their beliefs and superstitions, which he explained to Vivi at length.

By chance--if you believe in chance--Pitamaha once rescued the life of Gralluk, orc chieftain of the Urk-Ril, who fell while climbing Mount Gugoron as part of a religious pilgrimage. Gralluk rewarded Pitamaha with a small mouse-skull amulet and some rare knowledge of his tribe.

The Urk-Ril follow Vaur'cha, who they call Great Chieftain of the Mountain. They believe that all orcs will join Vaur'cha's tribe in the afterlife. Those who die in battle will become his warriors, while those who die peacefully become his slaves. They tend to fight fearlessly as a result.

They believe that the strongest deserve to dominate the weak. If someone steals your land or possessions, it's your fault for being weak or lazy. Most orc tribes share this belief.

The orcs of the Urk-Ril believe in repaying favours. If someone lends you money or saves your life, you are expected to repay it one day. They may even grant their enemy mercy, but only with the expectation that it will be repaid. (Unfortunately, Gralluk died before he had the opportunity to repay Pitamaha for saving his life.)

They are suspicious of flashy arcane magic, but deeply respectful of quiet and subtle spells. They respect strength much and words little.

Gralluk himself was surprisingly intelligent, and as a tactician he rivalled some of the best human generals. Whoever rules his tribe now may not be so subtle.

Briar isn't sure how to answer Vivi and just grunts at her question, focusing on the map instead.

Seric stands and puts on his hat.

"Well, the map's yours, take it or leave it. It's going to rain later this week, though, so so might want to hurry."

He heads out of the tavern and leaves you with the map.

"Well, come on," Briar rolls up the map and carefully shoves it into Franny's bag. "We shouldn't waste any time. After breakfast, let's get some supplies and head out. Thanks, Seric!"

(how can a tiefling wear a hat?)

Francisca munches the last of her bread. "Sure, Right with you!", She realises that she'd like to get a new hat, and will do so next time they are at a place with a hat store.

"You sure seem excited about this, briar", she says as she polishes her monocle and puts it back over her eye, getting her stuff together to go out.

(You're back to full HP and all, with one Action Point. You can buy any equipment up to a value of about 50gp in Dramsburg before you leave.)

Bidding farewell to Dramsburg, the party heads southward on foot, weighed down with supplies and gold. The rolling hills and civilized roads gradually give way to rocky terrain and sharp crevasses.

You find yourself forced to clamber over and around steep hills and through precarious ditches. It's not dangerous, but it is tiring.

Everyone roll two Athletics or Endurance checks (your choice), DC15. For each failed roll, lose one healing surge.

By nightfall, you stumble upon a cave. A broken cart and a pile of old rotten firewood suggest someone once used this as their campsite.

Not "getting out" much, Ampersand asks the others what essentials he should get to bring along.

Going out on the trail, he immediately starts proving his earlier statement to be completely true.

Pitamaha's wiry old muscles evidently still have some iron in them, as he endures the long hike without complaint.

Francisca starts off the hike in good spirits, sporting a lovely new beret that she bought from a store in dramsburg, but eventually gets worn down by it, getting more and more worn out and irritable.

[1d20 +3 > 15
1: 15 + 3 = 18 ... success
2: 8 + 3 = 11 ... failure]

"You sure seem excited about this, briar", she says as she polishes her monocle and puts it back over her eye, getting her stuff together to go out.

"Not excited, determined," she responds firmly, finishing her food.

Briar picks up a tent (20gp), grappling hook (1gp), and lantern (7gp, 351gp remaining). It's gonna rain, after all, and they're heading into a cave.

Briar shouldn't have eaten so much rabbit pie. It doesn't sit well on the first leg of the journey but she manages to work through it as the day wears on (12 surges).
