Briar looks surprised. "How did you know?" she asks, seeing the shaman's cataract-clouded eyes. "They said you were blind!"

"Well my first meeting with an orc didn't exactly go far to dispel all those boogeyman stories from when I was a kid", Gus grumbles as the two leave, "considering they wanged me over the head and kidnapped me into slavery."

"Many seasons ago, the talons and fangs were commonly worn among our people. Their rattle is as familiar and welcome to me as the voice of an old friend."

"But you, child, what tribe are you of? You speak with the heart of an orc but the voice of a travelling human soldier."

Vivi kicks back and relaxes in the hut. "I dunno. I really thought we'd all be dead or, you know, tied to stakes to be made dead later with fire, but it's sort of nice to deal with people who settle things by punching." She nods contentedly.

"Well, I'm sorta both," Briar said, uncomfortable under the shaman's scrutiny. "Whoever sired me left me with the Black Claws... they're a mercenary company, mostly bugbears and gnolls. They named me Briar. I've been trying to find my tribe or parents or SOMETHING to tell me where I come from."

"Ahh..." says the old shaman, blowing a puff of smoke and looking around as if she can see an invisible scene.

"The Black Claws. We fought with them, many years ago, when Gralluk was chieftain. The battle was a stalemate, but Gralluk was so impresed with their courage that he adopted the 'talons and fangs' necklace that some of them wore. Our tribe, the Urk-Ril, adopted it in his honour."

"As he approached old age, Gralluk suddenly left on a pilgrimage, leaving his many children in his stead. But one morning, all of them were found dead, and the shaman Kalor took over as chieftain."

"However..."

Her white eyes open wide.

"I consulted the spirits long ago. They told me that Gralluk still had a living descendant. The spirits told me that I would meet them on the night of a great feast, and that one day the child of Gralluk would return to reclaim his tribe."

Briar's jaw drops open. "Me?" She looks at the shaman, then at Francisca, and back. "Is... is that who I am?"

[Gonna try a perception roll to see if she's telling the truth or not, although I don't see why she'd lie.]

It sounds like she believes what she says.

The shaman stands shakily and hobbles toward Briar. She pats around Briar's face with one hand.

"You have Gralluk's features, all right. So the old chieftain had a daughter on his travels, and fate has brought her here."

Francisca puts her hand on her chin. "Oh my.. This is going to get interesting." She reaches out a hand and pats briar's shoulder, "So, do I get first dibs on the biography?"

"I uh," Briar mumbles. "This is... this is a lot." She sits down, looking dazed.

"If that's who I am... what happens now? What do I do?"

Francisca sits down beside Briar, putting an arm around her. "Well.. it looks like you've got two choices. One, you can just forget what you heard, we'll try leave the village, and you can try put it behind you, Or two, we can come up with an idea to help you get revenge for your brothers and sisters, and help you reclaim your rightful place."

She pats Briar on the back. "To be honest, I don't like that first one, that kind of thing would eat at you all your life. And the second one makes a much more interesting book."

She turns her eye towards the Shaman. "I trust you won't go telling what you just heard to people, I mean, if the chief finds out that you have proof of a living heir, I doubt he'd want to keep you around. Your fate and ours seem to be intertwined now."

The shaman chuckles.

"Oh, don't worry. Holding secrets is a specialty of mine. And Kalor will never harm me. He knows that I plan to come back from the grave and haunt him."

"I also know that you came to explore the Ruins. Be aware that the ruins below ground are not uninhabited. The chieftain himself seeks a great treasure hidden in the ruins."

"Stop talking about books, Franny," Briar snaps. "This ain't the time."

She stands. "And I'm not gonna walk away and forget. I came here with questions and the answers are makin' me mad. Gralluk and the others deserve peace. I'm gonna find a way to give it to 'em, blood for blood."

"What's the treasure the chieftan's lookin' for?" she asks the shaman. "It could be important."

"He seeks a power greater and more dangerous than any in Rynwold," she says, rubbing a small amethyst pendant around her neck.

"The Truth."

Francisca sits with her hands on her knees, looking up at the others. "I'm guessing it's related to the pages of the pantheon we've been finding. Maybe there's something in them that people don't want to be found. Having knowledge that people don't want you to have can make you powerful, It can also be very dangerous."

She stands up and looks at the shaman. "What is the current chief like, I mean, in your opinion, what drives him and what kind of person is he? Also, we came in here with a warrior named Kazrac, what is his status in the village?"

"The chief Kalor is quiet and secretive. He has the power over life and death and his relationship with the spirits is strong. I have seen him kill an orc with a mere touch, or even a word. Kalor is protected by a great spirit, who takes the form of man in a grey robe that rattles when he walks, like the rattle of iron chains."

"When Kalor took power, he cast away the old rules. Slavery became common. The people no longer make sacrifices to the spirits like their ancestors did. And we have camped here for many years instead of moving on with the seasons. Even for an orc, he is arrogant and dangerous."

"Now he seeks the Truth... but it is not just any truth. It is something powerful, some being or artifact, guarded and hidden away for a long time under the white tower."

"As for the warrior Kazrac... He is a respected fighter among our tribe, one of the strongest leaders. Orcs like him normally wish to become chieftain one day, when the last chieftain becomes old and weak."

Francisca nods. "So there is a lot of discontent with Kalor's rule? No disrespect intended, but I don't imagine warrior tribes are usually happy when someone takes charge using arcane means, especially if they start screwing with the traditions."

She paces a little, thinking. "I'm starting to sense a theme with the places we visit, too." She looks over at Briar, "Remember the dwarves? Doesn't this remind you of that a bit?"

[Also, gonna roll arcana and religion checks to see if I know anything about this spirit.]
