You know, you can set Gmail up to download mail from POP3 accounts as well as send through same. :slow:

It can send through POP3?

That really IS something.

Think he means that once you have it set to receive all the emails sent to a non-Gmail address, it'll also let you send using that address.  Which is extremely handy.

Well, you have to set it up separately, but yeah, you can send using other addresses with Gmail. And yes, it is quite handy. However, I suspect Thad was just being Thad. Hi Thad!

Yes.  POP3 is a receiving protocol.  It is not for sending.

And the "from" address is a header setting.  It actually has absolutely nothing to do with what server messages are actually sent from.  The fact that you can put any goddamn address you want in the "from" field is why we have spam.

(It's actually a pretty fascinating microcosm of the entire history of computing, and how our priorities have shifted from minimal use of resources to maximum functionality.)

It's 2010, yeah?  Maybe hardware manufacturers should stop requiring that I need a Floppy drive just to install drivers.

I hate it when a "Yes/No" dialog pops up and doesn't recognizes Y/N from the keyboard.

I hate when it does, and you're typing a sentence that has a Y or an N, and that triggers it before you notice the dialog box.

The way that every time I log out of hotmail it now bugs me to switch to IE 9.

It actually doesn't annoy me, really. In fact it just makes me giggle a bit.

I love that MS now urges anyone using IE6 to upgrade to IE9.

Because no computer running IE6 CAN run IE9.

Did I mention that up until last month our workplace was still on IE6, but the company's own sites wouldn't load properly and gave us the "Your browser is out of date, dummy!" message?

I thought that was pretty good. Ha!

So here's a thought.

Maybe, if you consistently can't fit your show into the allotted time, you should allot more time for it.

Failing that, if you consistently have to put the overtime material on your website, maybe you should make it less of a pain in the ass to find it.

On a strongly related note, it would be nice if the web version of The Daily Show just fucking defaulted to showing the extended interview in the "Watch Full Episode" view. What the fuck will I miss otherwise? My moment of zen? A "highlights" synopsis?

Butbutbut you can't have a TV show exceed 22 minutes on the Internet!

There might be some non-asinine reason for doing this. Or rather, it may be an asinine reason that has been imposed on the engineers (and other "creative" types) rather than by them. Perhaps having to do with their advertising model and a stated goal of not randomly interrupting video.

Yes, it could be some form of bureaucratic bullshit.

I doubt it would be ad-driven. The extended interviews even contain ads, IIRC. They normally have the interview just after an ad. Throwing the extended version in there instead of just loading the shortened version. (Maybe there's an ad in between the interview and credits/moment of zen that I'm forgetting.)

Also, wasted bandwidth → wasted money. If the video player buffers to the end of the episode (and I do not claim to know how the buffering system they use works) then buffering the short interview would cost less bandwidth than loading the full one, if other web users skip the interviews as often as I do. So, a "creative" could fully well have done it.
