DaggerXL
« on: November 09, 2011, 11:44:03 AM »

The niche of people that actually know Daggerfall as anything other than the bug-ridden prequel of Oblivion/Morrowind/Skyrim should be small, even here.

Even so, recently i felt like revisiting this game, as even modern games (not counting Skyrim) have been trying to catch up to this oldie's features. Much like X-com surpasses its successors.

DaggerXL Version 0.18 - Part 1

Anyway, after two days of visiting the  usual sites for stuff, i came across this: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Files

Which presented me with a nice fully updated windows installer and an alternative graphical engine project: DaggerXL, the reason for this post.

I guess things like this only get made after a game has been made free, like Daggerfall has.

I really love the character creation in this game, but, always forget why i always stop playing.

And here's why, hoping i wont forget it again:

1 - explore massive 8 level deep dungeon in search of vampire to kill (2 hours)
2 - give up and use cheat code to find vampire's location
3 - vampire is sealed behind secret door 10 steps from dungeon entry
4 - facepalm

The bloody random dungeon generator is too random!

Anyway, hope anyone enjoys this.

Oh hey, I actually just had totally missed this thread for some reason, that's a shame. Yeah, what they're doing with the XL Engine actually looks pretty rad and I've always been meaning to do a full run through at least the main quest in daggerfall, so this is as good as it's gonna get.

I've always been pretty fond of daggerfall if only because it's freaking enormous.

I agree on the random stuff getting in the way of fun. I never took dungeon hunt missions and just reloaded until I babysat a wizard against some goons.

actually guys, daggerxl does not like the latest community patch. The creator says it will soon fix that.

When you install from the link i gave  you make sure you dont select some of the stuff (dont remember exactly which), or you wont be able to run daggerxl on top of the installation.

Im really glad someone enjoyed this post. =)

Me, i'll hope for a new random dungeon generator engine (if that ever happens) before playing again.

Wow, I forgot how glaring 2-D sprites can look in a 3-D environment. It's like you're fighting cardboard cutouts.
