They're not actually. Penn State issued a statement today that they weren't going to appeal the judgement. It looks like that blog post was their lawyers jumping the gun. How embarassing for them.

Experts on why this is the end of Penn State's football program
Quote
Fox Sports' Jason Whitlock lines up with Wetzel and Levy.

"The sanctions cripple Penn State football. The four-year bowl ban, four-year scholarship reductions and the freedom granted to current players to transfer immediately without penalty or simply decline to play while maintaining their scholarships will make Penn State the Vanderbilt of the Big Ten," Whitlock writes. (Vanderbilt is a longtime doormat in the powerhouse Southeastern Conference.)

"The reduction to Vanderbilt’s level of competitiveness is likely permanent," says Whitlock. "It’s going to take two decades for Penn State football to recover."

$60 million dollars seems like a lot until they say that that's what the football team alone pulled in one year.

I can't wait for the "man on the street' interviews to start rolling in.

What was the South Park bit?  "Okay, so he touched some children.  But he's Michael Jackson.  MICHAEL JACKSON!"

This looks like it's going to ruin a whole lot more people's lives than just the administrators who were involved in the coverup.

In what sense? It's unlikely that the athletes will be affected, this was like some super rad team that every other college will be happy to pick and choose from right? The students that are unconnected to the football program will still get the same education if I read the sanctions and understand the consequences correctly.

As I understood it, the entire economy of that region of the state is based around the Penn State football program. This is apparently going to make a lot of people poor for a very long time.

So you're willing to punish many for the horrible deeds of a few? How Old Testament God of you.

So you're willing to punish many for the horrible deeds of a few? How Old Testament God of you.

The point is that it wasn't a few. It was an entire school of administrators allowing a trusted authority figure to RAPE AND BRUTALIZE CHILDREN because they wanted to win at sports games. It was a culture that demanded sports game excellence at the expense of THE INNOCENCE AND SAFETY OF CHILDREN.

If the entire region suffers the consequences for being part of the machine that created the culture that allowed this man to be a child predator, then so be it. Maybe people should care less about football and more about basic human decency.

Are these the type of folks that usually go for Old Testament style punishment? Maybe there's a nice, greater Old Testament karmic judgement going on here.

I think the point is that the entire region didn't now about the child abuse, mostly because those few in power made sure to hide it as long as possible. But who cares right, football is dumb.

Everyone in College Borough is a child molester now!

In serious, you know, I've got some empathy with people whose livelihood is based on questionable entertainment activities.  There's a point where you're just economically atomic-bombing the fuck out of the area to punish one guy who's dead, one guy whose days away from constant gangrape, and a system of power that kept everyone else wrapped around their fingers.

I'm not too upset to see the system crippled so that something less religulous can balance it out, but the overwhelming attitude here seems to be "Let's make them all suffer!  Even the victims!"  At least I hope to high fucking heaven that those people aren't local anymore or have the good sense to get out before the disenfranchised turn on them.  As for everyone else that was terrified and bullied into silence, I don't exactly see things getting better.

To be clear: I do not, in fact, actually disagree with the sanctions.  I think they're all minimally appropriate.  That said, I'm not taking out any goddam party hats and I'm a little creeped out to see so many people with no connection to these events parading around with them.

The DoE's ruling on whether Penn State violated the Cleary Act may kill the school anyways. If they rule that they did, their access to the federal student loan program would probably be revoked, meaning like most of the students going there wouldn't be able to enroll anymore.

You are correct, they didn't know about the child abuse.  But the child abuse wasn't covered up in a vacuum.  It was covered up to protect the Penn State Football Culture, because under the Penn State Football Culture, protecting the Football was paramount.  It was just these specific administrators that specifically acted this time, but the problem was the Culture itself.  Any punishment that doesn't kill the Culture is nonsense.

Every culture is going leave openings for corruption, but you probably don't want to be held responsible for the wall street scandals any more than your average guy selling Penn State merchandise wants to be held responsible for someone else's mental illness.

That's the problem see, like to go for an extreme example, I don't like the oppression of the Palestinian people, but I don't go around demanding the destruction of Israel. Which is kind of what I'm seeing with the people going football is dumb here.

Dissolving the entire regions economy serves no purpose. Should the people responsible be punished? Yes. But the entire region isn't responsible.

Problem is there's really no way to hold responsible the guilty parties without adversely affecting the region.  It's the right thing to do in the long run, but it's going to hurt a lot of people.
