I mean that movie critics, on average, thought Dragonball Evolution was better than something.

"Dragonball Evolution or a kick in the pills? I'll take the kick."

"Dragonball Evolution or The Last AirbeI'll take Dragonball."

I, however, am a bit more skeptical of this one than when Last Airbender was being adapted. For one, that one was clearly set in an Asian, Inuit inspired world, and white people were taking the main roles as members of various ethnic groups. For Akira, the entire setting is being moved to "Neo-Manhattan", so as far as I'm concerned, the race of characters are up for grabs. In the grand scheme, the fact that these characters are white is about on par with every lead character in every Hollywood film being white, especially films set in New York.

The characters are still named Akira, Tetsuo, and Kaneda, though, right?

...actually, if they just changed the damn names I bet there'd be a lot less complaining.

I mean, you know, there'd still be a whole lot of complaining, because Internet, but not as much.

I wonder if it will hew more closely to the manga... wouldn't that be a twist?

if they have a giant lady hitting people in the face with surface-to-air missiles then i think that's a close enough adaptation.

BREAKING HEADLINE:

GROSSLY OVER-BUDGETED FILM WITH LAUGHABLE DIALOGUE, EXTENSIVE PRODUCT PLACEMENT, AND ENDING THAT GOES NOWHERE BEING REMADE BY HOLLYWOOD
PEOPLE SOMEHOW EXPECT FILM TO BE DIFFERENT FROM SOURCE MATERIAL

God damn, do you really not like Akira?

Plot wasn't anything new but that was hardly the point of the manga or the movie.
I thought it was alright.
It's very much a Hollywood-ready film, though.

Remember when Robert Pattinson was rumoured to star in Akira? Well, guess who they're offering the role of Kei to?

Sorry, "Ky."

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if it was Felicia Day.

I initially thought I'd read "Kristen Schaal".

Which would at least be interesting!

Anyway, no, Felicia Day wouldn't make any sense.  Because the people who would pay money to see a movie because Felicia Day was in it are the exact same people who hate absolutely everything about this movie pitch.

The joke is that Felicia Day's skin has been used in police raids to blind mass groups of people.

Are you sure they didn't mistake Ky with Karen, Tetsuo's girlfriend?

Because that would be hilarious.

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/11/29/casting-call-for-akira-movie-includes-some-new-details

Quote
Kaneda is a bar owner in Neo-Manhattan who is stunned when his brother, Tetsuo, is abducted by government agents led by The Colonel.

Desperate to get his brother back, Kaneda agrees to join with Ky Reed and her underground movement who are intent on revealing to the world what truly happened to New York City thirty years ago when it was destroyed. Kaneda believes their theories to be ludicrous but after finding his brother again, is shocked when he displays telekinetic powers.

Ky believes Tetsuo is headed to release a young boy, Akira, who has taken control of Tetsuo’s mind. Kaneda clashes with The Colonel’s troops on his way to stop Tetsuo from releasing Akira but arrives too late. Akira soon emerges from his prison courtesy of Tetsuo as Kaneda races in to save his brother before Akira once again destroys Manhattan island, as he did thirty years ago.

Acting Auditions have also listed the principal stars, but without indicating their source in doing so. It may just be down to their Googling:
Kristen Stewart - Ky Garret Hedlund - Kaneda Helena Bonham Carter - Lady Miyako Ken Watanabe - The Colonel

Wait. You mean there's actually going to be a Japanese guy in this movie?

I don't think Watanabe counts, because I'm pretty sure that that's the only Japanese guy some western directors know.
