It is also an abuse of power given the freedoms these companies enjoy in the marketplace today. It’s a dangerous and troubling development when the platforms that serve as gateways to information intentionally skew the facts to incite their users in order to further their corporate interests.

There is a fascinating discussion to be had just under the surface here about the role of popular culture in the lives of Westerners and to whom culture belongs.

Kevin Smith makes boring movies that incessantly reference Star Wars and comic books because he is a boring man who relates to the world through Star Wars and comic books.  Five minutes on Facebook will tell you he isn't alone.

Here is my problem.

The fooAA is telling me that not passing fooPA is going to financially bury them.

This is supposed to make me want to support fooPA.

'snot working, guys.  Maybe if you, like, actually collapsed, we'd all stop and soberly contemplate the errors of our ways.  You know, when we're done pointing and laughing.

Press release put out yesterday by the MPAA:

A bloo bloo bloo

Zara posted that a few posts earlier, but never mind that, I just have one question.

Why is a Senator the chairman and CEO of the MPAA? Isn't that kind of, you know, a massively blatant conflict of interest?!

He's actually not a Senator anymore.

But yes.  Yes it is.

They've been writing articles and blog posts and posting on forums for two months. It's a big part of why the bill hasn't passed yet in the first place.

They're trying to raise awareness to the issue to the kind of people who aren't politically active.

Right, precisely.  If you think Boingboing and Reddit have not actually put any effort into reporting on SOPA, then you have clearly not been reading Boingboing or Reddit.  Or this thread, where I link to Boingboing approximately every third post.

People who read Boingboing and Reddit already know about this thing; in their case it's more about a show of solidarity.  Wikipedia is rather a much bigger deal.

There is a fascinating discussion to be had just under the surface here about the role of popular culture in the lives of Westerners and to whom culture belongs.

Not to mention the irony of the bolded part given that the people in the MPAA are the ones writing the laws.  (And vice-versa, as Mongrel notes.)

Peel away the layers of the onion and yes, an argument about who owns culture is at the very CENTER of this debate.  Something I said a couple of pages ago:

You know where I stand on this -- I won't consider our side to be "winning" until the DMCA is repealed.

And then it's on to repealing the 1998 Copyright Act.

And then repealing most of the 1976 Copyright Act.

And then maybe by that point we can start reassessing copyright and its purpose outright.

Piracy, DRM, takedown notices, DMCA, work-for-hire, copyright registries, the Mickey Mouse Copyright Extension -- these are all good topics, but "Who owns culture?" is at the center.

What we're dealing with here is, as I said, people who are offended by the very notion that something they owned is being used in a way they haven't approved or profited from.  It's THEIRS, and how dare anyone else violate it?

And then they sing a rather different tune every time they go back to Shakespeare/Grimm/Shelley/Kipling/Baum/Stoker/whoever.

I think all of this leads to the fundamental question, Why do we have copyright?  And at the risk of playing constructionist, it's to temporarily restrict the rights of the public in order to grant an incentive for people to produce creative works -- because the individual benefits in the short term and the public benefits in the long term.

And if Warner disagrees with me, that's fine, but I'm sure going to miss Fables, Frankenstein: Agent of SHADE, and The Unwritten.

America: Where the SOPA is rope, the PIPA are angry, and the barter's meant ta kill ya.

Also it's probably been mentioned before but I didn't know until I looked it up that the PROTECT in PIPA is an acronym in itself.  We're getting pretty close to HELPING CHILDREN THROUGH RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT with this one, guys.

Has anybody done a real study on how this would affect online security?  Because I think there are a lot of people outside of the U.S. who think being hidden from regular U.S. law enforcement/upstanding citizenry is a pretty hot idea.

After the revolution, there will be soup and kites for everyone.
If you do not like soup or kites, do not worry.
After the revolution, everyone will like soup and kites.

My favorite part of those tweets (aside from the obvious) is the "Normally disapprove of casinos" bit.

Blackout wins hearts and minds, drives key supporters of SOPA/PIPA to withdraw support.

Alright, I take back my hastily-said slacktivism comment (as you can guess, I avoid news sites like the fucking plague and didn't actually know how much they'd been covering this - my bad!). This actually did a lot of good. My favorite part is the bill's sponsor basically saying "You win this time, Captain Planet, but I'll be BACK!"
