I don't doubt they deserved it, but the dialogue still bugs the shit out of me.  "You can't do that in America!" versus "Actually, we can do that in any damn country we want."

The reports of Kim Dotcom's lifestyle, attitude, and past history don't help Megaupload's cause either.

Yeah, well, everything is awesome until someone figures out how to make money from it.

I wonder how close this was to launch

PRETHAD: details about a supposed music service Megaupload was going to launch called "Megabox" that purported to have artists keep a 90% cut, and pay artists for free downloads.

this would explain why the music industry was so damn nervous about megaupload.

It's Audiogalaxy all over again. Independant artists start self-distributing on a wide basis with an extremely popular go between, suddenly the RIAA is concerned about piracy.

The RIAA has been petrified for years of online music distribution because it's one more step towards cutting out record labels altogether. Once a sufficiently mainstream artist figures out he does not need a record label to sell his CDs, the floodgates will be open. Making that easy for anyone is not good for business.

This presupposes that there is a super-competent cabal at the core of the RIAA running the show.

If you don't think the people running the RIAA have planned out the next ten years you're fucking crazy.

Well, a plan that reads "Conquer Moon with lend-lease Russian waste rockets, sell cheese records to moon-men with DNA-imprint DRM" doesn't mean you're intelligent.

Of course they have a plan. Doesn't mean that's how things will actually go.

Doctorow: Attorney General set to destroy tens of millions of users' legitimate MegaUpload files

In a nutshell, MU's assets are frozen and so it can't pay its bills, and its hosting providers are therefore planning to wipe its data in the next few days; the AG is cooperating rather than considering this the destruction of evidence.

As an admin, I have very little fucking patience for users who stick important files on cloud storage sites and don't keep their own local copies.  BUT, I know that it happens.  I think we're looking at a potential mass deletion of user files that don't have backups, and if that happens, there will be lawsuits.

And the thing is, there's a simple solution here: let MU pay its bills, and allow it to go back up, on a temporary basis, with the same restrictions Filestube has imposed on itself: let users access their own files and nobody else's.

And yes, there's a trivial workaround for anyone who wants to share infringing files: just share your username and password.  But it's equally trivial to lock an account out if too many different IP's try to access it, and anyway I would assume that under the circumstances new signups and uploads would not be allowed.

Can you still upload things?  Because it seems like a great time to start stuffing the servers with child porn, bomb schematics, production leaks, etc etc etc

No, it's completely down.  It just hasn't been wiped from the servers yet.

Did you mean fileserve or filesonic? IIRC, Filestube is just a file-storage search engine and doesn't provide hosting services.

Fuck, does it matter?  The one with the generic name that used to allow sharing but doesn't anymore.

You should probably describe that link a little better, as I'm pretty sure people who are at work who didn't know what Cheggit was by name may be curious and probably shouldn't be viewing news on one torrent site about porn torrent sites closing.

That info is in the url, but I've made it pretty clear that I support making links less mysterious.

So much for Cheggit.

REGREDIT: Cheggit was the #1 adult torrent website after Empornium and PureTNA bit the dust. It's gone now.
