Doctorow:
Attorney General set to destroy tens of millions of users' legitimate MegaUpload filesIn a nutshell, MU's assets are frozen and so it can't pay its bills, and its hosting providers are therefore planning to wipe its data in the next few days; the AG is cooperating rather than considering this the destruction of evidence.
As an admin, I have very little fucking patience for users who stick important files on cloud storage sites and don't keep their own local copies. BUT, I know that it happens. I think we're looking at a potential mass deletion of user files that don't have backups, and if that happens, there will be lawsuits.
And the thing is, there's a simple solution here: let MU pay its bills, and allow it to go back up, on a temporary basis, with the same restrictions Filestube has imposed on itself: let users access their own files and nobody else's.
And yes, there's a trivial workaround for anyone who wants to share infringing files: just share your username and password. But it's equally trivial to lock an account out if too many different IP's try to access it, and anyway I would assume that under the circumstances new signups and uploads would not be allowed.
