Eli Schwartz is probably Paul from Ocean Marketing under an assumed name, the creator of the Avenger controller was giving negative reviews to competing products, the two of them have been involved in joint business ventures and the avenger controller website is owned by a company that releases commercial software designed to circumvent copy protection.

The thought is occuring to me that this whole incident may have been a PR stunt by a viral marketing firm as a way to boost sales for a product that, despite plenty of exposure, was not selling units (at all). The only other person who has made a scene of their issues with the controller was an IT professional back in June and it didn't really generate much controversy. And Gabe has a history of using Penny-Arcade as a platform to direct the righteous anger of the gaming community. Is it possible that Gabe may have been inadevertantly manipulated into starting a PR frenzy?

Something to consider: If the Avenger controller was having so much trouble with order fulfillment, why are the only reviews of their controller on Amazon prior to this incident exploding schill reviews? If they were getting swamped with orders, there'd be more info out there, wouldn't there? Wouldn't we have actually, you know, heard of this product? Granted, Engadget and some other sites did reviews, but clearly the product wasn't popular enough that we were hearing about it anywhere after the initial reviews hit, so what's the deal?

Conspiracy theories about this being a PR stunt kind of fall apart when you remember that the initial abuse was directed at a Penny Arcade reader that sent Gabe the back and forth he had had with Paul, and then when Paul mentioned PAX east, Gabe saw a way to dick the guy over in return, and only then contacted him.

I would imagine that the conspiracy theory has that reader being fake.

"I'm a tragic victim of circumstance! I'm not a bully, YOU'RE a bully! You can't fire me, I quit!"

Quote
"I didn't know who that guy at Penny Arcade was," he admitted. "If I had known, I would have treated the situation a little better. PAX is a great show. What he does is what I've been idolizing since I was a kid. It's admirable he's put that together. He has a lot of connections, ones I want too."

Again, have to admire the guy's candor about exactly what he thinks he did wrong.

Quote
"He called me a bully, but he was being a bully ... especially when he emailed me out of the blue, saying 'That's f***ing s***ty, you're banned from PAX,' I was like 'Who the f*** are you? That's how you introduce yourself? ... I dont want to call him out, but he could have gone about that a totally different way, he could have said, 'Hey, I run the show, that email was a little unprofessional, if you don't do something to apologize I don't want you at my show.' But he just came at me and said, indirectly, 'Hey, f*** you, you're banned from PAX.' Is that what you'd call professional? I wouldn't."

Christoforo also said his response was driven in part by what he saw as the disrespectful tone of the messages that came before it. "Not that I don't have respect for anybody, but if someone's badmouthing me or being a little punk or being a jerk, they don't deserve respect," he said. "You can't expect to go up and say 'Hey you piece of s***,' and expect respect.

I wonder if he actually said those two things back-to-back like that.

Most of the conspiracy data points seem to fit the idea that Paul was a previous acquaintance who leveraged that to get a job he wasn't qualified for.

The Avenger controller wasn't having problems with the orders because there were too many, it was having problems filling the orders it had due to maybe manufacturing issues and stuff like that. It's not a problem of too much demand, it's too little supply.

The issue with this is that we don't know the guy was actually a Penny Arcade reader at all. We don't know anything about the guy who initiated this with Gabe save for that his name was 'Dave'. For all we know he was just a marketing guy who took advantage of the fact that Gabe gets angry fast.

Maybe if Gabe went off like this more than once a decade, but just mentioning PAX east in a rude e-mail to someone Gabe isn't necessarily inclined to even give a shit about is a pretty dodgey, unreliable, and round-about way to get yourself shot in the face

Despite the fact that the same guy has done it before to someone who wasn't famous? I hate to bring up Ockham in any forum post but the exact same facts support a theory that the guy is just bad at his job and a theory that he made up a person and an entire long email chain (multiple times over the course of a year) to create really bad publicity for his company.

“We have to move forward and take care of Avenger’s customers,” Chiullan said. “I can’t worry about the fact that there isn’t a bus big enough for me to throw Paul Christoforo under. The internet did that for me. I think they set him on fire too.” He continued, “I just hope that people will have the common decency to leave his wife and child out of all this. They didn’t send those emails, Paul did.”

This is the official press release from N-CONTROL. The URL in the quote clears everything up that needs to be, and the situation is effectively resolved.

Yeah, this was disproportionate but I can't say I feel sorry for the victim in this case.  The dickwolf case, yes, rather deliberately crossed a line.

The important thing I learned is how much of a shit-heel Gabe actually is.

Uh, what did Gabe do except deny the guy entrance to further PAX shows and give the customer a megaphone? To my knowledge, Gabe isn't the one that went out and got Paul's phone number, address, and other personal information and then spammed the guy with threats and prank calls. By the time this thing started snowballing, there was not a damn thing he could have done, despite Paul's insistence that he "had the power." At worst Gabe was apathetic when the guy started begging people to stop, and really, who among us was really willing to stand up and say "hey guys, knock it off, this guy doesn't deserve to be harassed for being a fucking bully?" I certainly wasn't. Hell, I thought this whole thing was hilarious and as much as I believe in forgiving people, this guy had it all coming.

Was it out of proportion? Yeah, probably. But this is the Internet, and honestly I don't know what the fuck else anyone would expect after shit like lulzsec.
