WoW was constantly and accurately referred to as an "EverQuest clone" until they managed to boot EverQuest out of the public consciousness.  The appelation obvously didn't cripple them much.

I don't know. I like no auto-attack the way they do it here. The way their global cooldown works the game ends up being more of a rhythm or pattern game and I like that. I like feeling like I'm playing my dude.

It's all well and good now but the question enters play as to whether or not it will impede the endgame.

That, of course, remains to be seen.

Doesn't CoX (hee hee, cocks) allow you to input commands in advance to execute on cooldown?  Does TOR not have this?  And why the fuck not?

Also iirc that game's inability to provide an endgame past Hamidon had more to do with its advancement system not being able to scale past the originally defined top level than Controllers being fucking useless for anything but comedy.

Yes it does have that, that's exactly what I'm saying. The global cool down happens in such away that you're never button mashing, just rhythmically queuing up your abilities.

Prior to WoW, the most popular american MMO ever released had about 400,000 players at it's peak. WoW Crested five million in about two months. You copy what's successful. Whether or not what's successful was original is irrelevant.
Yeah, I feel like the 'we don't have an auto attack feature!' is their way of trying to seperate themselves from WoW without realizing the long-term consequences that decision will have on gameplay balance and endgame stability.

So anything remotely like WoW is TOR copying them, and anything that isn't is their desperate and fool hearted attempt to be different?

Oh no wait, Shinra is just stupid. On to more important comments.

Controllers being fucking useless for anything but comedy.
Tell that to my ill troller that would regularly take on two tankers / scrappers at once in PVP. A story for another day, though.

Bioware said they were copying WoW. I cannot believe you are so butthurt about this, but get over it. They chose the WoW formula on purpose, and have gone with it. The leveling experience is quite different because they put a bunch of single player games in there, and I haven't even heard about an end game, but practically everything I have seen and heard says "it's a lot like WoW but...".

The point is that they're trying to be different with something that has already shown to be incredibly stupid in other places it was attempted. (CoX, Champions, Age of Conan)

And again, you are being pretty willfully ignorant if you will not accept that TOR is deliberately copying WoW. Considering comments from EA during the game's development cycle, their goal is to create a game that can compete wow by emulating wow's success. Their entire goal, a a publisher, is to publish a game that copies everything right about wow and applies it to a different enough setting and liscense in the hopes that they can become an mmo market player with it.

Oh no wait Beat Bandit is just incapable of recognizing that the things he likes have flaws and that the feelings and reasoning others have for playing the games he likes are invalid.

Oh, and when did being like WoW become a bad thing? WoW does a lot of things right. "A lot like WoW but..." is a pretty good lead in to a game. Rift is a hell of a lot like WoW, except in all the ways it's not. As funny as it is to watch you flail about every time someone compares your new MMO love to WoW, stop it.

I'm going to have to point out that Wow's had a built in ability queue system that you could turn on or off since Wrath.

pretend I bothered to quote things

WoW is the current most popular MMO. It has gotten there by taking items from past, and competing games to make the most feature rich experience for the player base. Anything present in TOR carried over from WoW was carried over from something else before it.

As someone who has played an assload of MMOs, including the one we're actually talking about TOR feels almost nothing like WoW. Shinra saying this is a WoW clone is as stupid as saying any shooter is a Halo clone, Shinra himself, and the person that tries to say this is totally different.

You're missing the point by either being willfully ignorant of it or just too dumb to process it, and at this point we are just hitting a wall by trying to communicate with you at all. I think this conversation is pretty much over.

The Incredibles: Mr Incredible's Interview

I would like to hear how TOR feels, in Ryg's opinion, substantially different from WoW in gameplay though, mainly because I haven't played it yet (and won't until they offer a trial).

OK, so I'll just give the reasons why I like the game and ignore the conversation that has been going on so far. I like ToR because it integrates a very nice single player game with some multi-player options that allow for a lot of ways to play with your friends. The single player campaign is engaging. Literally every NPC who gives you a quest is voice acted and has his own personality. Yeah, some of the sith are generic evil guys who want to kill shit but there are some gems in there too. Also, each CLASS has it's own quests with a huge overall story that makes it rather possible for you to level to end game without partying with anyone. That leads into the reason I like the multi-play. You don't NEED a full group. If your party has a tank, and 2 dps and one of you has a healer companion you don't need to run out and get a pug healer, you can just bring out the healer companion. Your group can be anywhere up to 4 people of any combination of healer, tank and 2 dps. Meaning 2 people with proper companions can run all the leveling dungeons by themselves. Now, if you DO have four people it also unlocks some cool stuff, as each human controlled character you have increases loot drops and drop rates on rare items, so you do get a bonus for having more than one friend. Overall I think it's a solid single-player game that, for a bit on incentive you can party with your friends in. I don't know what end game will be like but I like the game for now.

Also I play on Adjunta Pall with Beat and James and, I guess, sharkey, though I've never seen him!

I could describe a bunch of individual features and how they are individually minutely different and in the grand scheme of MMORPGs it's different, but really it's just the gamepaly overall.

TOR feels more like a constantly online bioware RPG than anything else. The story you play through is your character, not the world. I'm not going to say there's OMG REPLAY VALUE from all the different stories. There are essentially four per side, and even then it's only the main story with side quests on each planet you go through being the same with only slightly different dialogue choices.

Still, because of the the game relies more on you playing it as a single player game, the companion character you're given from the time you leave the tutorial area of any class is strong enough to carry you through everything but certain, optional, group missions intended to be played with one of every class than the standard MMO build (tank, healer, damage) to keep the stories and dialogue options unique.

I still somewhat actively play WoW and Rift, and even though it's essentially the same game style, those feel like MMOs where I grind to level up or gear up. TOR is a game you play to get to see what happens.

That sounds like it would get boring pretty quick. Even if you're drunk on alts, that's a few RPGs to play through. What's the end game? Presumably at some point you emerge from your story line cocoon entirely and end up in some kind of MMO world, yes? What do you do then?

No, LotRO lets you play for free.

Just in case anyone had any doubts as to how shameless EA/Bioware was with copying WoW:

Look at the raid screenshots at the bottom: they even copied the loot window and need/greed roll box. Jesus christ.
