"I thought I had removed my credit card - apparently not!" is to "not letting people cancel" as "hacking" is to "I never log out of facebook when checking it at work"

As for the rep telling them the system was down and there's nothing that can be done, that seems questionable, but no more so than random internet comment.

I'm actually waiting for the shit storm to explode. EA/BIoware is using DigitalRiver as their service for this - DigitalRiver has a history of being complete and utter shits when it comes to renewing services. Remember that debacle with Warhammer Online charging people multiple times? That was the system being switched over to DigitalRiver that caused that. Additionally, all support, billing and basically everything electronically handled through EA/Origin is handled through DigitalRiver. Meaning every single problem with multiple charges, lack of product, etc, is their fault.

Even the shitty support is DigitalRiver.

Fun fact! DnD insider is handled by digital river who is actually going to remove the ability to cancel the renewal for that online. Good thing I turned that shit off as soon as I bought it.

I've been on both sides of this line. "Apparently not" is either A) I forgot or B) It was not actually removed when I told the system/person to remove it. It's up to you how you interpret it, but I want to side with negligence/malice of the above mentioned company than the customer.

Beats, are you going to bat for EA on this one or just reminding us not to jump to retarded conclusions like the vanishingly small number of responsible net users we ought to be?

RE: Rift/WAR/Conan

In fairness to Rift, that game has actually stabilized and continues to release constant patches, going so far as to basically add what was originally promised for Path of the Titans back when Cata was announced. They also have two man dungeons, and outdoor dungeons, and a bunch of other crazy shit. They carved out their little niche and they're living quite comfortably within it.

It's hard to give EA benefit of the doubt in cases of subscriber contract fraud when they've already been caught doing that several times.

That didn't take long.

Well hey I've been asking for that for a couple months now.

...'course now that I kind of hate every single person who works or has ever worked for BioWare my enthusiasm is somewhat dampened.

It's weird because they're doing pretty decent by normal game standards.
It's just against one game (WoW) that they look like a complete failure next to and apparently that's how EA is judging the whole thing.

Is that judged by sales or profit?  Because you really do need to have a grand slam to justify the maintenance costs of an MMORPG.

Do you?  A population holding steady between 300-500k for 8 years in FFXI has single-handedly kept Square Enix solvent, judging by shareholder letters.

Yeah, once you've broken even on initial production and overhead, it's all gravy.

It's just against one game (WoW) that they look like a complete failure next to and apparently that's how EA is judging the whole thing.

The issue is more that 100% of the attention they're getting right now is incredibly negative and everyone's subscriber numbers hold steady at around a million for the first few months. Games like Rift and FFXI can be profitable with much lower playerbases than WoW. However, ToR's budget was conservatively something to the effect of 200 million dollars. When you keep in mind the voice acting expectations they've set, the cost of developing patches and expansions is going to be astronomical. For the game to make financial sense for EA, it has to get more successful fast. And the fact that they are completely unable (and seemingly, unwilling) to stop the bad press is certainly not helping them reach that goal.

Oh this is actually pretty neat. As you level up characters of specific races and classes, you unlock those races and class abilities for other classes, allowing you create a Sith Pureblood Jedi Knight, or a Bounty Hunter that can wield a light saber.

This idea sounds kind of in-lore dumb.
Which cements, I guess, the idea that it's Star Wars fan-fiction written by D&D guys?

What Classic said. The whole purpose of the lightsaber is that it's "the weapon of a Jedi Knight." Letting everyone have it just dilutes the experience.

But hey, we're talking about a universe where every important event ever happened on a desert planet in the middle of nowhere.

Oh, right, we're looking at this from the perspective of an MMORPG and not a MMO-Single Player RPG with Multiplayer. I was just pleased with the idea of creating a Jedi-Hunting Bounty Hunter, my own (Genndy Tartakovsky-brand) General Grievous of sorts.

Well, various official Star Wars projects have been kind of slaughtering their own canon with abandon lately.

Of course this has been the case for a long time now, but they've really ramped up the eat-your-own cannibalism in the past couple years.

Here's how you know this is a bad idea:

It's what Star Wars Galaxies did.
