Racist Moments
« on: February 04, 2012, 03:46:29 PM »

We all have them.  Sometimes they're amusing enough to share!  And then sometimes they'll get you lynched.

So I was clicking through this chick's profile (don't ask me where or why) and thinking to myself, "God DAMN, she's got a weird nose."

Keep clicking.

"You know what?  I bet she's Jewish."

Clicking some more.

"She's GOT to be Jewish.  Fuck it."

I check it out.

Yep.

I was walking down a deserted street the other day, and some moron drove by and yelled the French equivalent of "FUCK YOU YOU GODDAMN ASSHOLE" at me through his window.

I have a long beard, long hair, a long black coat and a black hat. Apparently I can kinda pass for a Hassidic Jew if you don't look too close. Now there's no way to know if I was actually being antisemited at, but that's the only explanation I can come up with.

oh did you mean racism from us directed at others?

yeah i got nothin'

I was working at a restaurant and they began yelling the Italian word for eggplant every now and then. I realized they did it whenever a black family walked in. Apparently it was a warning to the cooks/waitresses because "they don't tip and complain about the food more."
That's the most "amusing" racist story I can think of.

After working for Sprint's tech support for a year, my skin reflexively crawls whenever I hear a black woman talk to me on a phone, four years later. I even do it at work now, when I'm doing phone support for a company whose vast majority of employees are college graduates.

It's not that I hate talking to black people, but Sprint tended to have a lot of very low cost plans they marketed to predominately black areas. They did the same thing with their pre-paid plans. Combine that with inflection and slang that just tends to stand out, and the calls you end up remembering are the ones you got from (esp. sassy) black ladies.

This has changed my thinking about race and I don't know if it's for the better.

Sprint stands out from the competition by offering the ho deal.

(Man that's two potentially insensitive references to Brad.  What the hell.)

I know exactly what you mean.  I worked customer service for T-Mobile for 4 years, and they had a very similar plan, and it was predominantly the same sort of people/attitude that called in about it all the time.

One of the best worst racist comments I've ever heard was at the prison.  Unsurprising, since we have members of every hate group in existence living out there.  Last year, my sargent at the time decided to fuck with one of the white supremecists.  He asked the guy if his group had any plans for the holiday.  The inmate asked, "What holiday?"  And my sgt said that Martin Luther King Jr Day was on that coming Monday.  The inmate said, "Aw, fuck no.  Why, you got anything planned?"  And my sgt said, "Well, yeah.  I'm gonna have fried chicken and watermelon."

Hey, I got a racist moment to post in this thread! I read "claptrap" and immediately thought "Man, this post must've written by a white guy."

Yes, a knowledge of “proper English” can be beneficial. But it turns out that speakers of other varieties—or other languages—are totally aware of this, not being idiots: if these speakers have access to resources that allow them to acquire “proper English,” they almost definitely will. (There’s a lot of literature to support this, by the way—I’m not just blowing smoke out my ass like I usually do.)

The implication that people who aren't speaking perfect General American clearly just don't know how and would happily adopt White Man's English if only they had access to better education seems... a bit off, to me.  Especially in the context of cultural slang.

Kind of ties in to something that's been bothering me lately: racism as a binary value.  As in, if you do or say something racist (subjectively), you are racist.  Your racism is confirmed by yadda yadda.

It's a pretty destructive tendency of people because it makes a lot of people scared to fucking death to talk about race at all.  Even if you've got pretty liberal views on the subject in general it only takes one awful misstep for (certain) people to pounce on you and send you off to White Jail where you're served nothing but Budweiser and grits.

What I'm saying is twofold: first that I don't think that guy is wrong or evil just because one of his talking points happens to come off as hilariously backwards, and second that I had to check myself to make sure I'm not just saying "What a goddam hypocrite" and writing him off so that neither of us has a chance to actually learn something.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say with this, but it's coming off as 'you're a bad person', and shaming people for posting in this thread is a pretty fucking awful thing to do.

Do you understand how terrifying the words “vibrating strap on” are for an asexual? That’s like saying “the holocaust” to a Jew.

Yeah I guess I need to make it explicit that it's implied that if you're posting in this thread, you get it.

What I got from reading the part you quoted was not "they would learn it if they could," but "they can and do learn it, and choose to talk the way they do anyway."

It's funny how few of you get the fucking point of this thread. If you're not enough of an adult to admit you've had a racist moment and reflect on that, I have little else but pity for you.
