I think the romance subplot has no chemistry because Mako doesn't really have romantic feelings for Korra, but the same protective drive that he has towards Bo-Lin. This has (at least) temporarily usurped his real feelings for Asami, because Asami was never in any real danger that he saw.

It's quite a believable relationship, just not an entertaining one.

Honestly, I would be 100% happy if season 2 is just Avatar & Pals.

ALSO: It's not cheating if she's The Avatar.

Gripes (Season Finale) first:

The brevity is really hurting the character development. Instead of Korra coming to terms with her lost bending (and then eventually going on a spirit world quest to get it back and learning some things along the way) she learns nothing and doesn't develop at all because magic Aang just shows up and puts her powers back in place.

Mako and Korra have no chemistry. At all.

Tenzin being recaptured makes no sense.

Amon's background was fine, but it fucks up Tarlokk's motivations. So he's a good guy but he wanted to take over Republic City anyway? What?

Pros:

Bolin is best character in... any media?

WHO NEEDS METALBENDING WHEN YOU HAVE NAGA

Holy shit the final scene with Tarlokk and Amon.

You know how bad the Korra/Mako romance is?

Aang and Katara had more chemistry.

Yeah.

Well, regarding Korra regaining her bending, at the end she gave up her worldly attachments (in a very dark way; that shot down the cliff face was contemplating suicide). This corresponds to clearing her seventh chakra and gaining access to the Avatar State. It's not exactly unprecedented. More, I'd hardly call coming out the other side of that kind of absolute despair an experience that doesn't lead to growth or development.

Tenzin being recaptured was a bit weird, but I guess Amon did have planes, so. At least it doesn't contradict anything.

The situation with Tarrlok and Noatok seemed pretty easy to understand to me. Their crazy dad was obsessed with power and he passed that obsession down to his sons, even though they pretty much hated him. Tarrlok was set to attain it politically, only using his bloodbending in times of desperation, and the shock of the whole situation made him realize that despite his best efforts he'd turned out a lot like his old man. A shocking epiphany, a serious trauma, and a bit of remorse to make the slimy politician a more well-rounded character, and in his escape at the end he realizes the cycle's just going to repeat itself. Noatok, meanwhile, saw the removal of bending as the ultimate expression of power (he said as much), and went out in search of a way to use his own talents to achieve that power and impose it on the world. He manipulated the whole revolution as a means to that end. Two power-hungry brothers, neither a good guy, but not wholly monstrous either.

Anyway, I'm hopeful for a less urgent season 2.

OK, but what I said would have been 100000% better. Justify it all you want, it was rushed. And at least to me, it felt empty. YMMV, I guess.

Yeah. I guess. Again, rushed as fuck. Show them getting captured.

Tarrlok

I... guess. Here's my reaction to Tarrlok's shit.

At first they built him up to be the "smirking douchebag" villain type, and then did a fucking MIND BLOWING reveal of him as a bloodbender. Bloodbending being, by far, the most sinister and creepy kind of power that exists in this world. And not only that, but he can do it outside of a full moon! HOLY SHIT!

Then fucking AMON SHOWS UP AND SHIT IS HITTING THE FAN OH SHIT WHAT IS GOING ON

oh i guess Tarrlok is now a good guy who is sympathetic. That's what is going on.

Character whiplash. Tarrlok goes from smirking douchebag to INCREDIBLE MASTERMIND SERIOUS THREAT to poor Tarrlok is an innocent little kid who doesn't want to hurt anyone so fucking fast I think I broke my neck.

My prediction about Season 2: It chronicles the formation of a loving, caring relationship between Bolin, Asami and Korra.

Yeah, I think they're done with the equalist stuff. Since the equalist rally and everyone seeing Amon doing waterbending is the magic Aang of that plotline.

Also actually addressing the magic Aang stuff. It would have been nice if Katara was the one restoring the avatar, since it was established Amon was doing bloodbending to limit it. And it would make sense with bloodbending and Korra keeping airbending stuff. If he had been doing a magical bending removal of a different sort then it should have affected air bending.

Also, Amon might as well have been Yakon for how much of an asspull that reveal was. Still completely expected and predictable though, but boring.

Also, also, even when Mako is doing heroic and awesome stuff he still seems so lame. He would be a more compelling character if he actually was just overprotective of everybody without putting the romance stuff in.

Oh, also, also, Korra totally murdered some people, through no fault of her own, when she was waterbending against the planes and then some of them just crashed straight into her water or her ice maybe. Still no possibility for a parachute there.

Man, that other post is getting big. Anyway, since apparently Korra is dishing out free magical bending, instead of actually fixing bloodbending damage. She should just give Bolin a new element or two, since Bolin is baller.

I don't know where you got the idea that she's just giving people new bending. Amon "severed" the connection to the elements, and Korra's using spiritbending to repair it, which is beyond the ability of the best remaining bloodbending and healing in the world, but apparently ain't no thang if you're using an entirely different approach that only the Avatar can use and only while in the Avatar State. But it's repairing something that was damaged, not creating something new.

There's also no reason to think that the Equalists have laid aside their grievances, only their hostility.

My reason to believe the equalist stuff is over is because much like everything else in the show, things reach a conclusion is the most simple and predictable way possible. Would really enjoy it if that's not the case though.

Also, it's just the severing of the elements that was entirely unexplained really, I mean it was nice of Tarlokk to give us his and Amon's entire backstory in like half an episode, but still failed to explain Amon's severing power other than just a random throwaway comment by Korra and bloodbending.

Also, I am willing to believe the Avatar in avatar state and everything can even fix whatever Amon did easily, that's why I'm willing to believe the Avatar in avatar state can just give out bending powers all willy nilly. It just that in comes in the tail of magic Aang. They could have done an entire season leading up to magic Aang but they just chose to use him to finish the show as if they're trying to tie all the loose ends because they're not getting another season or something.

You know, the more I think about it the less sense Tarlokk's character makes. Like he picks a fight with the avatar for no reason and then keeps her locked up for also no reason, since it turns out he's not in league with the equalists. Plus as pointed out earlier, he seemed very sure of doing his father's biding, but then it turns out he was a scared little baby as a kid.

Tarrlok didn't use his bloodbending except as an act of desperation, and once he did, he needed to eliminate the witness. If he were found out (which he was), she'd also make a useful hostage. Kidnapping her and locking her up was logical. And Korra was the one who picked the fight, not Tarrlok.

Pretty sure Tarlokk shot first in the fight with Korra.

Amon's background was fine, but it fucks up Tarlokk's motivations. So he's a good guy but he wanted to take over Republic City anyway? What?

This is one of those things that definitely needed an extra few scenes to develop.  On paper I think it makes sense that the shock of

Tarlokk realizing Amon is his brother
and is just as much as a power-hungry loon as he is
might make him re-examine his priorities, but ultimately it just feels kind of abrupt.  Kind of how like Azula went from cunning machiavellian villain to OH SHIT MY FRIENDS DESERTED ME I'M IMMEDIATELY CRAZY NOW I GUESS in season 3.

I guess I'll just blame it on having twice as many important regulars and half the run-time as season 1.  Still enjoyed the heck out of this despite the aforementioned lack of Bolin and the zzzz Mako antics.

I realized something about Mako. There's nothing wrong with him as an individual. Some minor drama due to Teenage Feelings, but mostly just a generically dependable upstanding talented good guy. His character traits describe what he is rather than how he acts. And he seems to have been created for the sake of creating a relationship as an accessory for the hero. In other words, he has exactly the same problem that a lot of female characters do.

Magic Aang really was sort of the worst possible way to end the season, especially since they're actually getting more episodes. Like they built up this nice tension with Korra losing her bending and then they did absolutely nothing with it.

And bongo, on that last post you're right on the money.
