Know who Mako reminds me of the most? Scott Pilgrim.

Yeah, and both of their entire motivations is that they want to bone this one chick.

If anything, Mako is Locke from FFVI.

Also, on rewatching ep 9, I don't like how Korra just jumped at the conclusion that Tarlokk was Yakon's son. He could have easily just been some random waterbending dude with Tarlokk as a teacher, the same way you have a whole police force full of metalbenders.

Which is part of the whole reason I'm disappointed they used bloodbending at all. And well, by the end of ep 9 with Amon resisting bloodbending the only explanations could be that he was either not human or just another boring bloodbender.

I realized something about Mako. There's nothing wrong with him as an individual. Some minor drama due to Teenage Feelings, but mostly just a generically dependable upstanding talented good guy. His character traits describe what he is rather than how he acts. And he seems to have been created for the sake of creating a relationship as an accessory for the hero. In other words, he has exactly the same problem that a lot of female characters do.

I sort of love this about him. It's nice to see a dude who just exists as a trophy for the heroine for once.

He's definitely the sort of character who has more entertainment value for viewers who consider handsome broodiness to be inherently appealing. Which, in fairness, describes a large, significant, and vocal fraction of the show's fanbase. And there's no doubt that it's equitable.

It would not has been as bad if they had not cut from Tenzin literally saying "WE MUST BE PATIENT. SHE NEEDS TIME TO COME TO TERMS WITH IT," to Korra regaining her bending literally seconds later onscreen.

I overlooked a lot of this as pacing issues though. Literally every problem I have or other people have pointed out can be essentially blamed on "They crammed shit together because they thought they didn't have enough episodes". Though I agree, not redoing the finale with the future episodes in mind is weird.

It just would have been nice to get a season of her learning the lesson that life is worth living even if you can't bend as she just clumsily air bends around the world. But yeah, it's a lot of pacing issues is all, stuff just happens too fast with no build up and when there's actually any build up during the episode the payoff comes at like the end of the same episode.

Elsewhere I run into people who seem to have been expecting the season to end with the main character having the one thing she considers most important to her identity taken from her by force with no apparent hope of regaining it. That is... not a reasonable expectation, nor can I see how that would constitute an improvement over what happened. I can buy that Aang needed a longer and deeper setup, but not that he shouldn't have shown up.

A show where Korra isn't a highly skilled fighter and had to come to terms with that fact might be an interesting story to tell, but considering it's an action series, I would by no means prefer it over one where the protagonist is the one with the flashiest magic kung fu of them all.

She could still air bend man, there was still plenty of magic kung fu to get out of that. But pulling out magic Aang at the very end just for the sake of tying shit up and being done with it is something you'd do if your show is getting canceled. And apparently bending is not only the most important thing for her, but from what she admitted to Mako she seems to think it's her only worthwhile quality. Fucking equalists are looking good right about now.

In the first scene of the show, Korra is set towards the objective of getting in touch with her spiritual side. The crux of the Avatar's spirituality is drawing on the knowledge and powers of her past lives. At the end of the show, she attains the Avatar State, where she can draw on the knowledge and powers of her past lives; it is the successful end of the longest-running conflict of the season. Having done so, she is able to solve a problem of extreme personal and global importance that only one of her previous incarnations had the ability to deal with. It's quite a neat storyline.

If you're saying that it would have benefited from taking the time to make her spiritual progress more explicit or further establish the capabilities of Aang's spiritbending, then I agree. If you're saying it shouldn't have happened, then I don't.

You know, everyone on the internet seems to focus on Bolin and how's he's great but everyone seems to forget that Asami is the real secret best character on the show.

From her first appearance to the last scene of the show they've done nothing but pile things onto her and she still comes up fighting the good fight. She knows her boyfriend is in love with the avatar but doesn't get mad at her for it. Her dad is the mechanical mastermind and she helps fight to stop him. She has her loyalty called into question early on and gets more and more reasons to go to the other side and she stays loyal. Her dad tries to kill her and she captures him alive and mostly unharmed and sheds a single tear. All without bending.

As for Mako, you've all touched on most of the problems with him except one. He's a top pro-bender, he's skilled enough to conjure lightning like nothing, and even Amon said he's impressed by his bending ability. So why is it other than the four lightning strikes he's thrown out in the last episode do we never see anything remotely impressive by him? He looks like an ordinary bender to me up until he threw a couple bolts around. They just tell us he's impressive all the time and tell us he's in love with Korra and tell us that he's a good guy without actually showing it. This could be a pacing problem but they've shown Bolin was impressive as an Earthbender right off the bat. Mako walked in and they just said he was good, too.

Well, cart before the horse and all that. I could have accepted the Aang Ex Machina if it hadn't all happened so fast. A little time of life without powers, more attempts to reach the spirit world, and a better understanding of what life is like without bending would have helped the show out. Instead, because Korra got SUPER SAD Aang came out to help her. Because of how SUPER SAD she was.

Fucking equalists are looking good right about now.

Really hope the Equalist stuff stays into the next season. Aside from the tone-deaf reactions to the concept by the principal cast and that nothing has really changed in Republic City, it turns out that the guy preaching about power-mad benders who would abuse their abilities for personal gain turned out to be a power-mad bender who abused his abilities for personal gain. If anything, Amon's revelations end up justifying all the points Amon had talked about.

I really wanted her to get some sort of closure. Mako was never honest with her. She had to take down her own father. Some sort of catharsis would have been nice!

Honestly, as soon as Korra lost everything but her air bending, I became immediately excited for season two being at least partially a long journey into the spirit realm to regain everything that she had lost.  That's my main disappointment with the abrupt and pat turn-around.  More spirit reeeeealm.  :(

They wrote the whole season before animation began, which was before they got more than one season. I liked how it ended, personally. Magic Aang, if that's what we're calling it, doesn't bother me, because she's the Avatar, and I would expect some magic and consultation with previous Avatars. Any complaints about her learning some spirit bending from Aang can be directed to the Lion Turtle who taught him by poking him in the forehead.

Aang's spirit bending came after days of meditation and consultation with his past lives. Korra had a spiritual block all season, got sad and Aang Ex Machina gave her everything.

He talked to his past selves, who consulted him to kill Ozai dead, and then a Lion Turtle told him that spirit bending existed, and then poked him in the forehead, apparently giving him the knowledge to do it. This all took place over the course of a day.
